1). If you own the business, make sure you have all legal matters well grounded and you are in control of all intellectual property (IP). That's what Trevor did, as the business owner.

2). If you are the talented person using your talent and resources, make attempts to buy equity as leverage for your talent, otherwise you will just be an employee who can be dispensed off easily. Equity will give you ownership rights, as well as being able to make some key decisions. That's what Eve Mungai NEVER did, and she lost when it mattered.

3). If you are the talented staffer, make attempts at understanding the business side of the initiative. Understand how to engage sponsors, prospecting for guests, making the financial matters add up etc. Now, this is the real business, The camera side is a very small part of this business, even though its the public one. More is done behind the cameras, and that's what powers the business, not the cameras. An example is Diamond Vs. Harmonize affair. When Harmonize left, though he was very talented and did well for Wasafi, it will take him decades to build something big like Wasafi, if he ever will.

Talent can be hired, business has to be developed and build slowly, ensuring all cogs work. If you think its only talent, ask yourself; where is Mark Masai after NTV? Where is Dennis Okari? How visible are they? Every employee is dispensable, so if you want to someday run something like it, learn the trade.

Director Trevor can hire great talent and still move on IF he understands the business side.

4). Learn the business leverage. Did people watch the show because of Eve Mungai or the guests that are arrayed there? If its because of the former, she can move on and create something worthwhile for her own, but it will take time. Still, she wont be able to effectively transition ALL the followers of the previous channel to her new one. If its the latter, then she has lost her leverage and business side wins.

5). When you work for a big brand, you get things done easily, and you become very easily successful as a person within the brand. Things are very different when you are outside. Bitange Ndemo, a very brilliant man, explained how hard it was even for his phone to ring the moment he was dropped from the ministerial job. You may read the story of Leonard Mudachi, formerly of Carnivore here, explaining how he found it different and how even the contacts he had made while managing Carni' became useless after he left.

7). When you work with someone who is perceived dumb, be very careful. In most cases that's a ruse, some smokescreen to make you overestimate yourself. They are schemers par excellence. That's what Director Trevor was, and we never saw him coming, till he was already here.
