I have locs as well. My hairdresser had told me when I was 13 that the best hairstyle for me in terms of keeping my hair healthy and from breaking, would be locs. There was a collective silence in the salon. Then a collective challenge of how is she going to get a good job? I was scared and nervous. However, because I had only ever felt beautiful when my hair was natural and that my hair would finally be healthy natural, I decided to locs my hair. I have never regretted it. And career wise, there has not been any negative effects.
People who don’t hire anyone because of their hair puzzle me ,I’m glad you didn’t fall into the trap that prevents so many sisters and brothers from locing their hair . Locs are sooo beautiful
I'm glad you spoke about this! I'm a loose natural and wear my hair in mini twists & simple low tension styles a lot of the time. The same way a white person can wear a 'cute messy bun', I want to be able to do a loose bun and let my baby hairs be free lol. I'm so tired of people thinking that natural hair is not 'neat' / professional unless it is either in extensions or slicked down. I really hope more black people will learn to reject this type of thinking
I’m almost 3 months micro Loc’d and is so in awe by my locs! I watched countless locs of others who I thought had similar hair textures and densities and my hair turned out more fuller and beautiful than expected! No ugly phase here and I wish I wasn’t scared to death about it before hand. Loving every stage is the journey ❤
My locks are 1 year old, I am loving them. I agree with you totally about the derogatory name given to new installations. I renamed my new install phase as new lock stage, or baby lock stage. On a different subject I just finished The Silent Patient and really enjoyed it, great read!
I just locd my hair because it’s easier to maintain with two kids! I hesitated to loc it initially because of the misconceptions. I totally agree, we just like the hairstyle! Lol
I’m falling down a hole watching all your videos, thank you for this content . I’ve been going back and forth for so long about locs and I absolutely love how microlocs look. Yours are beautiful. I have such an emotional connection to my hair , I can say so much but it would be a book girl, I’m seriously considering just taking the jump and doing it. Thanks for all your honesty and sharing with us.
I have sisterlocs and I absolutely love my hair! Best decision ever! 8 months locked and enjoying the journey. Great points and completely agree with your statements. Never had anyone say anything to me about my hair but I could care less about their opinion anyway. 😀
I loved your perspectives on locs and the misconceptions. Someone asked me why I decided to loc my daughters hair. I was not as eloquent as you in this video. However, I knew that it gave us both back so much time and freedom. And for goodness sake her hair grows out of her scalp. Why cant we embrace her natural texture!? This style is frowned upon because my daughter is 7 years old, unfortunately only by some of my own community. We can do mid week washes, my daughter swims every week without the concern of her messing up her braided do, and we have drastically cut down on the volume of products. People are so concerned about what we'll do if she changes her mind and wants loose hair. There are options, as you've clearly pointed out. Love your videos lady 💜
Thank you so much for sharing your story. There's a girl on here called Imani Goodridge, her mom also loc'd her hair when she was young because she was a swimmer too! It always baffles me because I've only ever heard negative things about locs from our own community. If anything I wish I had loc'd my hair when I was younger!
“Fill in your ignorant adjective here”. I know that even in Abuja, Nigeria, I get some weird comments about loose natural hairdos which don’t look very sleek. I did battle with it myself in my head about my own look. I’m about a month microloc’d now and I know this will come at some point but I’ll take in my stride and hopefully with grace. Thanks for your videos. I intend to vlog my journey and you’re such an inspiration
For black women regardless of how we feel, I've accepted that how we choose to wear our hair will ALWAYS be considered a statement of self expression and values.
Thank you for doing this video ❤. Love, love it. I’m still looking for a loctician and September is the month for me to get my micro locs installed. I can’t wait! My worry has always been the initial stage but I’ll get over it 😜😜😜.
I’m new to your channel and I have enjoyed watching your videos! I can relate so much to your hair journey and viewpoint on locs! I have learned so much and have found renewed confidence in my loc journey! Thank you! #4MonthsLoc’d #Microlocs
I recently told my mother and aunt i would be getting micro locks, and they tried to discourage me by telling me locks cause receding hairline. My response was sound like a hater. Unless it runs in the family, i don't need to hair that.
I feel people should learn more about something before going against it or saying negative things about it. The non African people to should accept the fact that God created African hair in a certain way and so there's nothing they can do about it than to accept the way God made. Everything God made is for His Glory. Anyone can have rough and unkempt looking hair as long as the person is unkempt and dirty. It could be an African or non-African. Microlocs can definitely look neat and beautiful, it just depends on the individual, just as straight hair can look limp, rough and dirty. before anyone start to say whatnots about anything, its better to be knowledgeable about it rather than speaking out of ignorance. Ignorance is not an excuse . its too dangerous.
I agree, ignorance is not an excuse and you make a really good point. Boris Johnson never brushed his hair but yet he was the prime minister of the UK.. that’s going to be my comeback next time lol 😩
Happy Tuesday RUclips fam!! Please don't forget to give this video a thumbs up!
Hi could you please put the link of the place in nigeria you had your microlocs...

Thank you so much for sharing your story. We need more women like you in corporate spaces to change these narratives.
I have never related more to a comment. About to loc mine soon.

You’re so kind thank you so much Leah. It’s a big decision but one thing I will tell you is I have never regretted loc’ing my hair. Not even once. 💕
I feel the same way

I recently told my mother and aunt i would be getting micro locks, and they tried to discourage me by telling me locks cause receding hairline. My response was sound like a hater. Unless it runs in the family, i don't need to hair that.
The reasons used to discourage us are endless lol
I wear wigs over mine sometimes. I'm 8 months in.
So happy it's worked out for you!
Cute top Ifeyinwa!!
Thank you, it's a dress! I got it last year from Zara.
Oh too cute. You know I never shop at Zara. I'm in St. Louis, Missouri and not even sure if we the have store. I'll have to check!! Lol thx
