This was probably the best performance in the history of the International with Reve du'On parked five turns to the first mile in 1:59 and setting the then-world record of 2:28 3/5 in this race. He nearly did this again the following year only to have Peace Corps, arguably the greatest trotting mare in the sport's history nail him on the line.
Need to correct this: This was the SECOND greatest performance ever in the International. The only one better was Une De Mai's first International win in 1969 when she was parked all the way to 1:00 for the half, 1:30 3/5 for three-quarters and a mile in 2:01 3/5 before winning in 2:33 2/5 at a time when it rare for PACERS to go a 2:00 mile on a half-mile track and no trotter had ever gone under 2:00 for a mile at Roosevelt (which would not happen until Kash Minbar went 1:59 4/5 several years later).
@@brianjschumer But Kash Minbar would never have managed to make the whole race outside. American trotters do not have as much stamina and strength as French trotters (it's genetic). Remember Une De Mai, Ideal Gazeau, Lutin d'Isigny when they came to win the International Trot several times each of them always running outside. And even if in France, the races are about 1.4 to 1.7 Mile, we must always be wary of them because even "the invincible" Mack Lobell had succumbed on the Mile against the French legend Ourasi who was at the outside during the whole trip ....
@@litogor Lutin D'Isgny was forgotten as he came right after Ideal. Lutin set the then-world record of 2:30 when he won the 1984 International and could have gone a lot faster if he had to. The shame was he and Meadow Road never met and Lutin didn't come over for the Statue of Liberty Trot at The Meadowlands where he probably goes sub-2:55 for 1 1/2 Miles (which would have at the time been huge) in 1985.
