    For your information that missile site was built over an subterranean lake, the water started to appear in 1963 and the military tried to pump grout to stop the water from rising, they could not stop the water from rising and I suspect it was from the weight of the concrete pushing down that caused the water to come up, I was stationed there in the 568 missile squadron

      I don't think the OP was implying that the DI was unqualified, rather that the DI is not at the forefront of people's minds when it comes to learning about ICBMs, one would usually make that association with rocket scientists/nuclear physicists etc

      there is at least one silo where hydrazine leaked from the fuel tanks and the silo (533-7) was decommissioned before proper cleanup
      since hydrazine is water soluble and very stable under standard conditions there is a little risk
      but even that mentioned silo was at least cleaned somewhat - they used nitic acid to oxidize the hydrazine slowly

    Also, ballistic missiles do not orbit. Ballistic trajectories may leave the atmosphere, but they are no where near fast enough to orbit the planet.

    I've been in there. There are 2 others. Warden, and the Batur scragg titan silo wich is now a museum. All in my home land of central Washington. There are also 9 other titan silos, vertical launch, across eastern Washington. Mostly private. My first trip was about 20 years ago. The one these guys are in is on the Columbia basin aquifer, hence all the water. The Columbia basin irrigation project also added to the extra water (grand Coulee damn).

    Overhead enviroment, loads of entrapment hazards that cant be cut and they are on singles with no line to surface. This can only go well.

  • @matthewmeeder9499
    @matthewmeeder9499 8 лет назад +3

    Two things... First do do this type of dive, there needs to be a line with markers from the surface, just as if they were penetrating in a wreck dive. Second, due to this type of diving for safety reasons they need a secondary air supply and lights with each diver, so this could be either back doubles or sidemount, and a primary flood light with secondary hand held. Thankfully we see one sidemount diver at 4:48. Please anyone who watches this video do not attempt any overhead unless trained to do so.

    • @seikibrian8641
      @seikibrian8641 8 лет назад

      +Matthew Meeder -- They're diving in a vertical shaft with no side tunnels or overhead obstructions. Why would they need lines and markers? The only horizontal tunnel is the one leading to the silo, which is traversed on foot.

    • @johnn4773
      @johnn4773 8 лет назад

      The surface is straight up and a non-overhead environment. There is NO "penetration". There is a bottle staged at 15'. What makes the need for redundant air supply here any different then any other OW dive night dive?
      IF it was an overhead environment I would agree with Matthew statements.

    • @ROTAXD
      @ROTAXD 6 лет назад

      SeikiBrian they're not simply diving in a single silo. They're diving the entire complex with the exception of the crew quarters which were topside.

      Most are diving just the single silo that's a non-overhead environment and no penetration. Some that dive the side-passages are diving them as confined spaces with overhead and visibility issues...with the requisite equipment.

      One of the outfits that will take you down there says only for experienced divers with 'advanced certification', although I don't know what that means. Recent documented cold water dives are also required. Although that's not specific, it's a dive for advanced divers, not beginners and intermediates. There are several groups that will guide the dives (WA state). If you contact any one of them I'd sure they'd tell you exactly what is required to go on the trips.

    Yeah the water would equilibrate with the concrete and it would be similar in pH to a limestone cave dive. Which means low iron content in the water as you need acidic water to carry iron in large amounts. Organics would be diluted and broken down by heterotrophs. I still wouldn’t drink it but that’s why we have skin.

      They were called Titan for a reason. Site 724A (where my father was killed at during construction) is next to the Arapahoe land fill near Denver. They were considering removal of the unground facilities. No frickin' way. They are a massive complex of hardened reinforced concrete designed to withstand a nuclear blast. It seems they scuba only in the one of the silos. There are other ancillary underground buildings. This is an underground city. It took 4 days using a special diamond tipped saw to remove one door so they could retrieve him and that was a mere 116 tons. Good luck trying to destroy this beast.

    • @ElSantoLuchador

    the problem i see with this especially in the dry area is that during the cold war asbestos was used in almost everything including in those bases so you should really where at-least simple masks to prevent cancer and other ill effects of asbestos inhalation

    • @bl4cky89
      @bl4cky89 7 лет назад +2

      It's no problem as long as they don't blow up any dust. It's not like asbestos that was used in materials all out of a sudden floats around in the air. If something was set free, it has settled on the ground. And as long as you don't get it back in the air? No big deal.

      Noah Parkin it's not like it's friable and there's a wind storm down there. If it's not disturbed it's not going to pose a threat. Not to mention, the asbestos in that environment is all likely soaked to to the facility being flooded and the high humidity the flooding causes.

    single tanks in an overhead ?

    • @johnn4773
      @johnn4773 8 лет назад

      What is the overhead? It is 100% open to the surface. It is a night OW dive, just not from a shore or a boat. There are a few areas that might be considered cavern at best.

    Does any sunlight hit the water? Introduce some small fish... see what happens

    • @mattcwatkins

      The blast doors about 60' above the water surface have a few pinholes in them you can see light through from either tolerance in bolt holes or tiny slivers of cracks between mating metals, but it's DARK in there. I don't think fish are going to survive...and there's some industrial smells in the place anyway...kinda smells like hydraulic fluid.

      @johnn4773 8 лет назад

      If you have exposure protection gear adequate for 2 cold water dives, 2 good lights, are comfortable in the dark and have good finning and buoyancy skills you can do it. No tec required as it is not an over head. Just a cold dark dive in a 110' deep pool.

      Put on all that scuba gear including a tight cold-water wetsuit, extra weight, and a hood....that's what usually will send a claustrophobic person over the edge. Walking over pipes to get to the main cylinder...not so much.

      Since one of the guys that has (or had) permission is a local deputy....good call. You want to dive it, call Undersea Adventures in Kennewick. Bruns will hook you up.

    • @ElSantoLuchador
      @ElSantoLuchador Год назад

      It is most definitely NOT a public space. All the dive tours have to get specific permission. Yes, the tours are planned well in advance. The dives are intended for advanced, cold water divers. It is not a tourist type deal. You can't just go there and see the stuff that is not underwater either.

      It was built below the water table in the area. When they were operational there were pumps that kept it clear. When they closed, they took the pumps.
