The Bad Guys Christmas Special Is VERY BAD

- Man this film was bad. Like, it's a holiday short film. I get it. They are twenty fie minutes of mindless fun. But this wasn't that. This was BAD. Bad I say. Like, how can you make twenty five minutes feel like an hour? How? I'd almost be impressed if I hadn't had to sit through it. But yeah, here are my thoughts on The Bad Guys Christmas Special.

Judging from its animation quality, it looks like it was produced by the studio responsible for DreamWorks TV shows.
ah yes dreamworks tv. responsible for making all hail king julien AND all hail king julien AND all hail king julien AND all hail king julien AND all hail king julien AND all hail king julien AND all hail king julien AND all hail king julien AND all hail king julien,
Like damn i knew it wouldnt have anywhere near the quality of the film but this straight up looks like placeholders
That's because IT IS! It's made by DreamWorks Animation Television.
@@victorpinasproductions7076 Does that mean they're going to make a series?
I thought it was just me, because I haven't seen the movie or the Christmas short, but then I could tell the difference in what clips came from the movie (high frame rate) and the clips that came from the short (choppy lower frame rate that almost looks like claymation at times)
Another thing I don't like about the short film is that Diane Foxington doesn't appear not even a cameo.
The special takes place before the event of the first movie
@@cryo-genshin9522 If that's the chase then that explains why she's absent.
@@squallrowlandson8028wasn’t she a criminal before the events of the movie? They still could’ve added her lmao.
@@JustGre3d Also I don't think she was instated as Mayor in the start of the movie was she? I could be misremembering but I think she was already Mayor before the events of the film so she could've just appeared as the Mayor.
@@misterlad8525 She was the governor not mayor.
Bruh they’re cancelling Christmas just because a Santa got destroyed, that is so stupid
It's no less believable than Shark's Mona Lisa disguise.
well the plot has to move somehow
To be fair, the film establishes the townspeople aren’t very bright, I mean, come on! How they’re fooled by the Bad Guys’ disguises when they’re clearly so paper thin? So them canceling Christmas due to Santa being destroyed isn’t really a big issue.
Not only that, but they also mention the destroyed Santa balloon like 25 more times throughout the special. They couldn’t even get creative with the dialogue 😭
@@joaquimpower477 its creative enough, what else do they complain about other than santa? The weather?
I turned it off literally 2 minutes in
1: The animation felt like stiff rubber puppets
2: I want to see how these guys act as good guys, the original movie showed them being bad more than enough
The animation felt like the TV series of Monsters vs Aliens and Kung Fu Panda.
@estebangutierrez160 They were likely produced by their TV studio. I saw an interview for the "How To Train Your Dragon" TV series, and they mentioned that both productions are run by separate entities.
The bad guys have some soft sides in some scenes of the special which is weird because it sets before the events of the movie when they turned good guys.
My first thought when the trailer came out was how in bloody hell did they hired Nickelodeon animators to do this?!
Yeah comparing it to the actual movie they feel so slow and they do like 4 gestures each second it just doesint look right
I’ll just pretend that this isn’t canon.
The animation looks really jumpy and unfinished. The lighting was fine, but their movements remind me of a stop motion animation I made in 6th grade for a project or that disappointing season 5 miraculous "special" with the plastic king guy
I guess they were rushing this as soon as possible to meet the deadline?
That's likely because they were created by the studio who made their TV shows.
I watched it. I liked the original feature film, but the special was dumb. It felt like they didn't try at all, and it should have been set after the events of the movies. It was a waste of about a half hour.
Anyone else would've loved seeing this in 2d animation?
Yeah I would have liked it more if they animated it in the 2d art styles they used for the pictures in the movie
Hot take that some people might get upset at me for, but personally I think that having the special set before the events of the original film not only could have worked but could have actually been comedy gold if it was executed correctly. In fact, one of the criticisms I have toward the original film is that the Bad Guys weren’t dysfunctional and unhinged enough. I genuinely think that if they had gone in the direction of making it a dark comedy akin to a kid-friendly version of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia or Arrested Development about a bunch of assholes that are all terrible people in their own unique ways whose plans blow up in their faces and who perpetually dig themselves deeper in their attempts to fix whatever problem they’re going through, it could’ve been absolutely hysterical and a refreshing change of pace from the stereotypical cutesy and saccharine Christmas special most people might expect.
You might enjoy "The Legue of Super Evil".
Oh that would have been BRILLIANT.
No it wouldn't work plus it would ruined the actual films since it's reveal that although criminals they're not evil kinda like sly cooper and his gang.
@@colindowden2182 I’m not saying that the special should have had the Bad Guys be evil, I’m just saying that the special might have been more enjoyable if they overtly portrayed them as being assholes. You don’t have to be evil to be an asshole and you don’t have to be an asshole to be evil, and I’d argue the easiest way to show that would just be to have them up against someone leagues worse than they are.
Maybe the plot could’ve instead been about them angering some mob boss or crime lord for one reason or another and then spending the rest of the special scrambling to either win a bet against him or pay him back by Christmas Eve/Christmas Day under the threat of death. I don’t know, I just think that would’ve made for a much more fun and interesting prequel than the cliche “saving Christmas” plot brought about by something as ridiculously trivial as destroying an easily-replaceable Santa balloon.
@prettypenguin1944 To be fair, the characters that aren't anthropomorphic animals come off as kind of dumb in the first film. Who would seriously buy the fact that Shark is a master of disguise?
DreamWorks really said "Hey, people liked when our fight battles on Puss in Boots 2 were more frame-ty, so lets do that for this movie...the whole time :D "
The film studio or the TV studio because the special looks like it was created by the latter.
The real bad guys were the one’s who came up with this special 😢
Lol
remember when the original film had in-between frames and the characters had WEIGHT to them? that was nice
I don’t understand why the animation is that bad you see the other dreamWorks Christmas specials They actually do a pretty good job on the animation
Especially with the Trolls holiday special. It has good animation though!
The other holiday specials were likely produced by their movie studio, while this one was produced by the one for TV shows. My guess is that they were the ones to pitch the idea.
Jungle Shuffle did better with art style than this, even is bit wonkey but there reason it look like that to emulate cartoon look.
@andreafraustoz TV studios usually work on a shorter budget than movies studios, 3D shows are usually harder to animate than 2D, and "The Bad Guys" has a lot of stylized elements that the TV studio may not have the resources to replicate.
Yes but even then those TV shows do look better than this. I wonder if they just didn’t have the time to do what the wanted because this whole special feels like a work in progress.
I am confused on how you did not point out how the humans look in this movie. Reminds me of roblox's obsession with the metaverse. The human designs in this short film look exactly like roblox anthro.
I remember I heard of this and got so exited. Like I wanted them to rob Santa’s workshop or something like that, it sounded fun. But when I watched the trailer I was honestly so baffled that I couldn’t even watch the whole thing. The animation is what ticked me off, it looks horrible. So much so that I had to watch the original movie just to wash the taste out of my mouth.
I’ve said this in a different video about this movie, There are a few things I would like to point out. I remember reading an article a month or two after the release of The Bad Guys saying one of the voice actors would reprise their role, even if it was a tv series if not a sequel. I’m definitely confused if this actor didn’t return because they either didn’t have enough money or if it was the actors strike.
The other thing is this is probably the first animation project of there being a down side to stylized animation. With The Bad Guys not having realistic animation like Shrek or How to Train Your Dragon, this smaller animation studio probably thought they wouldn’t need to put much effort into it. With the original looking and moving like cartoons and anime while this makes it look lazy. When they are getting flamed by that robot, Mr. Shark and Mr. Piranha look like they are basically t-posing and they don’t even look like they’re showing any emotion either. There’s literally a scene where Mr. Snake turns around and glides without moving.
I think it's less about the amount of effort and more about the resources. I remember an interview regarding the "How To Train Your Dragon" TV show mentioned that the series and the films are produced by separate entities. If this special was run by the TV studio, they probably don't have access to the same resources as the movie studio.
When I watched the special I kept finding myself drawing comparisons to the penguins of Madagascar show, the visuals and animation was vary close to that style, as well as a few comparisons on how the characters were portrayed like how tarantula went from being a hacker to a full on inventor much like kowalski from penguins, my conclusion is that maybe they got some of the old people who worked on that series to do this as a kind of start point for a Netflix series (hopefully not) or they just got lazy with one
I saw an interview regarding the "How To Train Your Dragon" TV series mention that the movie and the series are run by separate entities.
A much better "prequel" would've been a show about The Bad Guys' backstory and all the heists they have done before the movie, something along the lines of "League of Super Evil"
Maybe it's because I'm almost 40. But I'm not expecting most animated Christmas specials to be high quality. They're usually made as quick entertainment for children and a reminder to casual audiences that the franchise still exists. Especially over the Christmas season when a child can say they want the toy of a particular character and parents might give the kid for Christmas.
The animation looks rlly unfinished. Like the went past the blockout phase, added some breakdowns and then left it like that. It could be made with a fps that is way less than 24 like 8fps but i doubt it.
The best guess is because it was created by their TV studio as opposed to their movie studio.
I was pretty excited because the bad guys was a really great movie and a family hit. My dad loves it, I love it, and my 9 year old brother loves it. Heck, even my grandma loves it. However, when my brother turned it on, I watched for thirty seconds before standing up and leaving. The animation was one of my favorite parts of the movie, so the stiffness and plastic texture was a dealbreaker for me when it came to the short. My brother turned it off five minutes later. I asked him why (he had been really excited for it). And he just said “it was so bad I couldn’t watch it”.
I think it's likely because they were produced by the TV studio. I saw an interview for the "How To Train Your Dragon" TV show, and they mentioned that the series is run by a different entity from the movie.
The animation was made so glitchy in my opinion
I think it might be because DreamWorks' TV studio was the one that made it.
wow why would a city cancel christmas over a santa balloon and i dont get why a snow tornado would be created IF WOLF DIDNT MAKE THAT FRICKIN MISTAKE
It's no less believable than Shark's Mona Lisa disguise or the Bad Guys casually walking into a bank to declare they're robbing it.
This is what we waited a year for!?
So this was essentially them trying to milk the series for a quick cashgrab?
DreamWorks is like any other company. They thrive on profit.
I actually knew this was going to happen before they released trailers. Vailskibum made a vid on it like a year ago. Same for Orion and the Dark.
@@ThePrincessCH the tv show animators are seperate from dreamworks, they are likely the greedy ones not dreamworks
@DeletedDevilDeletedAngel Or their company can't afford the same resources. 3D tends to be harder to animate than 2D, especially when it comes to TV shows, and "The Bad Guys" film does have a rather distinctive style. The movie studio's software could be proprietary.
@@ThePrincessCH yeah but the TV show animators worked on this and they are like seperate from dreamworks
This is definitely a pilot for a tv show
And I'll watch the show whenever it comes out.
This entire movie looks like a low quality rip. It honestly looks more like an episode of Miraculous Ladybug. Blabey was involved with this, but even Blabey's original versions of the characters are more fun than what we get here since they were a lot more dysfunctional and unhinged, and so things would often blow up in their faces as a result of their own actions so they were hardly successful criminals. The movie's versions were able to commit crimes like it was pretty much just routine, and were more predictable in their crimes. That works fine for the original film as they grow dissatisfied with their criminal lifestyle, but it's also why no one was asking to see into their past. Honestly, I'd even take a sequel where the Bad Guys use the very skills they once used to commit crimes TO stop another villain from committing a holiday heist.
Nice Zoophobia PFP
I didn’t even watch it. Most dream works shows and shorts reuse actors. In the Bad Guys Christmas Trailer, I recognized nearly 4 actors from their Boss Baby show.
for the most part, i thought it's bad quality was really funny, and made me enjoy it ironically. but the weird random part where wolf apologizes to them really forcefully heartfelt is so... weird and cringe lmao. the line delivery, especially from shark, frustrates me too, it sounds so stilted? tbh it felt like i was watching a cutscene compilation for a bad guys christmas DS game or something XD
Bruh this was so bad I went to go watch the original movie to respect it again..
Well, time to stick with Kung Fu Panda Holiday, Penguins Christmas Caper, and Merry Madagascar as always.
I didn't even get 10 minutes Into the movie before I turned I off 💀 😭
They made a Christmas special of this?
7:33 i bet the writer was like "oh bad guys? Well let's put them on a prequal note this the bad guys are grinches" such failures for Netflix
I turned this on some days ago and completely forgot I watched it
The animation (especially for the mouths) just looks so choppy and bad.
It's likely created by their TV studio as opposed to their movie studio.
The animation is just horrendous. How did they even greenlight this...?
It’s horrible, the lip syncing was making me pissed off because it was so bad - The animation wasn’t smooth, either.
And what was messing with me was the different voice actors, honestly sounds like something that would be in a toddlers show
3:10 if there was a real life robot Santa it better be santa-NK1
If you ask me, I wholehearthly agree on your points and I also felt just pain and cringe
watching it... especially that seeing the orginal movie for the 1st time was very special to me
-an artist who got burnout and stopped trying to incorporate passion into at least some financial profit,
what about just loving doing so... the designs, the humour in many aspects, the colors and effects, the camera
shots and movements, the life added by voice actors.... it was just inspiring! Here, in this short?
Everything great got ripped like with loud Velcro. At least I got to discover that mr shark has scars
on its arms, pecks(lol) and how mr Piranha's scales look clearly. But this is a personal try-hard if you cannot tell...
At least the other short is nice. the one about maraschino ruby.
I liked it. I went in expecting a simple little special on Netflix. I got a fun little caper attempt during the Christmas holidays.
They made a bad movie they should have been working on the bad guy 2.
It might not be a movie. Judging from the animation quality it looks like it was made from the same studio that created DreamWorks TV shows.
This is done by DreamWorks TVA, the studio responcable for DreamWorks' TV Shows because of this, this might act as a pilot for a Bad Guys TV show
I tried to watch it but couldn’t get past the animation. It felt stiff and every time a character spoke it looked like their mouths were lagging or something, very clunky. Honestly the plot was kinda dumb too not gonna lie
Christmas is not about Santa it’s about Jesus Christ‘s birth and he came to save us from sin
!
There is room for both Jesus and Santa, so stop getting so melodramatic every time Santa is mentioned, because he is as much a part of Christmas as Jesus since he is based on Saint Nicholas. JEEZ!
the intro is literally miraculous ladybug lmao
As soon as I heard Wolf's voice and saw the downgraded animation I knew this was gonna suck.
The animation quality of this short has me concerned about how the upcoming Megamind TV series is going to look
It's not that different from the "Penguins of Madagascar" and the "How To Train Your Dragon" series.
Your comment aged like wine
@@thehedgehograpper I also watched the first six minutes of Megamind 2 and it only gets worse from there
I hate it because Netflix replaced the movie with this special
THANK YOU!
The saddest part is how strikingly great the original movies animation was and this is hurting my eyes it looks choppy in a bad way stilted the animaters were probably rushed in a bad way which is just sad
That intro is how I feel about mlp g5
I thought it was so bad, I thought it should be named The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Animation Budget!
Looks like Dreamworks was channelling Disney's Wish, because Bad Guys - A Very Bad Holiday, had similar weak animation, flanderised main characters, shoddy AI sounding script, and stretching a paper thin story beyond its capability. I dropped a thumbs down on Netflix for the Bad Guys Holiday Special, that's what I'm calling it, something that was advertised to be entertaining, only to be an embarrassing letdown.
That's probably because they were created by the entity that's responsible for their TV shows.
yep
I know this is a different movie I’m talking about but I’m responding to the question you asked at the beginning of the video 0:00. Because I was very excited for Trolls Band Together but only to see how weird the movie played out. I have invested so much time into it, I did felt obligated to myself to see it through so I don’t feel like I’ve wasted my time with the pointless movie. It’s hard for me to stop watching it. If you haven’t seen the movie, do not read my comment down below.
Trolls band together felt too short, it doesn’t give more time for drama and action at each places poppy branch and John Dory traveled to. The snack pack who are Poppy’s friends never returned after the wedding in the opening of the movie. Poppy and Viva’s reunion doesn’t serve much great purpose for the movie. The worse thing about it, the ending skips over Poppy and Viva’s conversation about their dad for keeping Viva’s existence a secret from Poppy for decades. Yes this sucks that i can’t stop watching the movie because I had a lot of excitement for it.
I personally prefer films that are more fun than dramatic. I can't handle scenes that are too intense. "Trolls Band Together" was just right for me.
@@ThePrincessCHwhat do you mean just right for you?

It was likely created by their TV studio.
@@ThePrincessCH yep
@@CharliemagneHouseofhazbin I think they're the ones who pitched the idea, which is why they produced it as opposed to DreamWorks movie people.
The animation looks like they only animated with keyframes and they forgot to put in the inbetweens to make it smooth. It feels rather stiff most of the time.
I was expecting this special to be cheap, but not THIS cheap.
I hate how the animation for anything that Dreamworks produces that is not a movie is SOOOOO lackluster (Except for the trident PIB 2 short).
Like, I know it's not a movie, not the same budget, but... why not put more budget...? Bad Guys is known to be one of the movies with hybrid animation, you can't just take that away for a short, the animation is choppy, the movements aren't fluid, it's just pose by pose, like something you'd see in family guy where it's just pose after pose with mouths moving, also, Wolf looks... weird, I noticed how in the movie his mouth line specially was SUPER expresive and was able to stretch out of his snout, here it's rarely if not never seen which ends up looking off.
Idk, something something, animation that equals that of an average Dreamworks movie that turned into a TV show.
It might not necessarily be a budget thing. I saw an interview regarding the "How To Train Your Dragon" TV show that mentioned that the movie and the series were created by separate entities. If the TV studio came up with the concept, maybe their the only ones who can legally work on it.
Why did they use the unfinished versions of the models?
My family almost made me watch it the first thing that I thought was that it was made by the same studio as the boss baby show
It was alright, but what was that animation? I didn't remember the main film feeling like that.
I just feel like they shouldn't have made a short about The Bad Guys in the first place. One of the aspects that made The Bad Guys special was the animation style so stripping that style away ruins it immediately. The only way I could see this work is if it had the quality of the movie because the stiffness of the animation imo is what really makes this short suck.
bro it looks like a cut-cease to a bad guys video game.
i was interested to see it cause i love wolf and wanted more clips of him. i watched the full thing just for the sake of more wolf, but was pretty disappointed about everything else. at least keith silverstein is in it, so thats cool?
We wanted a sequel……not this……
I dont wanna sound rude but from the clips of the special you have in the background, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE ANIMATION! It just looks so unfinished and just really terrible. The characters look soooo uncanny i cant even focus on anything else :(
It's probably because they were created by the studio responsible for their TV shows.
true
It looks like a movie from my microwave
It's supposed to be more of a tv show special since the franchise is getting a show, this is most likely how it's gonna be
its annoyingly distracting how they took the lower frame rate style of the movie--which was reserved for accentuating snappy action moments--and applied it to the whole short in a way that makes it look horribly cheap
Do you like the how to train your dragon movies and series?
He did reviews about it so yes but not the new one Netflix did. That one isn’t the same
Merry shrekmas
let me tell u something : every movie that gets a short film or tv show always have bad quality because less people and less work are done on them because there cash grabs but movies are worked on because if they arent then the company will fall apart
It really looks like A.I. made how the characters move! They just look very stiff, and it’s like they jitter around every time they move their hands and body in general! It doesn’t have the charm in the animation like the first film!
I've watched the whole thing and uh...yeah, its not good.
(Who the hell cancels Christmas over a fricking Santa Balloon getting destroyed?)
EX-actly.
Who casually walks into a bank and declare that they're going to rob it?
...yeah, you're right, should've thought about that.
The most important part of a movie isn’t not the voiced. It’s the writing.
I find it amazing how Netflix can turn amazing art designed characters into a shitty puddle. It looks like creamy piss 😂
To be fair, the original actors are celebrities. A lot of factors are at play for them not being in the short film, such as the actors strike or having another movie to act for.
Didn’t even know this existed
It was inevitable
I agree, I hate the spiders voice, its TOTALLY not the same voice as the original voice!
Oof... That frame rate...
Can you review Wallace & Gromit
The animation in this short actually looks unfinished. Like the scenes themselves are missing poses.
It makes me wonder what the schedule was like for the animators working on it, and whether or not they had a decent amount of time to finish.
I mean merry Christmas
That in a good way like Jesus is the reason for the season! Bless you anyway my Christmas
It may not be the worst Christmas special to exist, but considering how much of a major downgrade it was compared to the Bad Guys movie, especially when it comes to the animation, is like free-falling from the International Space Station all the way into the Grand Canyon, it's that special type of bad that majorly affects it regardless if it's a Christmas special or not.
Trust me, I wanted to see it but when I saw Netflix Logo showed up, I was upset. Why? Because Netflix. They're cheap and non-union. They don't bring back og cast, no disrespect, but they didn't have a lot but didn't do much animation
I think Netflix is more of a distributor than a producer.
did you watch the trailer? the animation was a HUGE red flag. the animation is something i can't get passed. the bad guys film was an animation master peace. this is worse then the old barby animations.
the animation is so choppy ☠️☠️☠️
Praise the Lord
Well DreamWorks ruined the bad guys
I’m just laughing that this became a disaster. Even Zootopia+ ended this thing’s misery.🤣
When I saw the trailer, I already knew it was gonna be bad,
Look, as an animation major I have a strong appreciation for all animation. my standards are pretty reasonable as is. Me and my boyfriend tried watching this and we could not for the life of us get through it. Its animation, voice acting, and story were unbearable.
Ah, you don't know what you're talking about. This is something that should be on nickelodeon.
I couldnt even get halfway in the film, it looked that bad.
The special was a flop but I strongly think they just made the special to cash in and grab the attention of young children (despite the film being like, for any ages from what I believe) but tbh they had all the time to improve on the special
(Although I did like the lighting and shading in the special)
no because why does it have the physics of the first madagascar?
The first madagscar looks better than this
I was so mad lol
Nah because when I watched it I was like bruh what is this 😐💀
this is truly one of the most disappointing shorts from DreamWorks period, animation quality aint everything but THIS looks 100% just UNFINSHED and the voice acting is also quite mediocre.
