- What happens when a leading road and mountain bike manufacturer goes all in to design an e-bike specifically for urban riding?
We take a look at the Orbea Diem. An e-bike, built around a Shimano motor with a powerful 630wh battery integrated into the frame; integration is the name of the game. Lights, mudguards, rack, motor, and phone mount - and there are no exposed cables or wires.
Would you consider getting an Orbea Diem? Let us know in the comments!

What do you make of this new Orbea city dream machine? 🌆
If it doesn't have easily removable battery then I think it's a big no from me. It's just much easier to carry battery up the stairs into my apartment than to carry a whole bike.
Also I think folding ebike would make more sense for city.
too expansive. it costs 5k get a grip. I can get Giant FastRoad E+ EX Pro for half of that
No turn lights: FAIL
Not removable battery????? EPIC FAIL!
No means of advanced security: FAIL!!!
With its price and being a city bike so you'll leave it in random places, it will get stolen even in the safest city in the world
@@freeemail6299 The Diem 30 might be a better comparison to the Giant 🙌
I’ve been commenting for a long time saying chains with chain cases and gear hubs, or belt drives have always been the only real logical choice for daily transport riding. I’m glad more and more sport brands are doing what they should have been doing for decades already. It’s better late than never. The less people riding chains and derailleurs for transport and never cleaning them, the better.
More of Si doing his bad dad-dancing, please. made my day.
Be careful what you wish for 👀
The ultimate city bike for me is one capable of moving loads (couple of kids, several days worth of groceries, a Christmas tree, ...). That's why I love my long-tail e-bike.
Another must have is comfort: give me curved handle bars so I can sit upright instead of cycle hunched over (the battery covers the loss in aerodynamics nicely).
Batteries I prefer external (like the Bosch one that comes with a handle). If I stop at a bike rack without charging points, being able to pop your battery out and recharge it inside is just nice.
The quick saddle heigh changer on the Orbea is nice.
Same with the lack of gear shifting. I remember when I started riding my e-bike I'd find myself at red traffic lights in too high a gear. Made taking off when the light turned green a bit tricky
The low maintenance is a very nice plus to the Orbea
This Orbea is a great option for urban riding 👌- We hear you about the cargo bike, it's a great option for those that have the space. The Diem takes up no more room than a normal bike, but you can still really weigh it down 🛍 How long have you been cycling in the city for?
@@gcn 2 years 3 months and I have done 6000km with my bike.
I've also joined the national cycling group so we report via app everywhere the cycle infrastructure is lacking and/or dangerous.
Agreed on the batt thing, so many situations require the it to be removable. I think it is a deciding factor.
Love that Si is focusing on commuting and everyday riding for normals. More please!
Cycling is for everyone 🙌 Commuting is a huge part of cycling culture. Great to hear you are enjoying the videos, what would you like to see next?
Since moving to Copenhagen I can say that my eyes have opened to what a city bike can/should be. We have 3 electric bikes in the family (including a big box bike) the enviolo hub with automatic gear is brilliant. A step through frame a must, and integrated lights/mudguards make life a lot more comfortable. From my experience, urban life often comes with apartment living, and for that you need a removable battery, you may not have the ability to charge where you have to leave the bike. A ring lock/rear wheel lock, is a must, and I would like to see whether a child seat can be fitted. Otherwise these bikes with some real load carry capability are the future for urban transport I think.
Totally agree with all you said, I use a VOLT PULSE, it has all the above plus a security swipe card to disable/enable the bike for security, I havent seen a better thought through commuter from any other brand, its pretty well perfect
Sold!!! Just ordered one!
e-bikes are really hitting their stride with the lightweight focus. Since e-bikes are stiffer it makes sense that they found a more compliant frame design.
I love the Enviolo Automatiq shifter, it's really magical. Also the details like the dropper post, brake lights, and brights button are really smart and so helpful for city riding. I just picked up a Creo 2, but so many brands are coming out with awesome e-bikes recently.
It certainly feels like E-bikes have upped their game 👌This new Orbea was super futuristic but great fun to ride... the future is here!
Now bicycles are more costly than cars, however, price is not the main constraint for most potential consumers. Theft is the main issue. Could you do a video about insurance options or how to protect a commuter bicycle investment?
E-bikes should have anti theft measures built in from the base systems upwards. The electronics and power are all already there.
@@paulausanti theft features are useless against gangs
Are you talking about one particular color? 4 huge bicycle locks will do the job for that
@@HistoricalWeapons If you have the ability to render the bicycle useless electronically which you can easily do with a battery powered bike why not add it in as an additional detterent
To be fair, car theft is also pretty bad these days if not worse.
Very similar design to the new Sirrus frame - great to see a wide mix of bikes on the channel too 👍
We love all kinds of cycling 🙌 A good solid commuter is a great bike to have in the arsenal 👌
@@gcn Be better if we had solid sunshine too - see what you can do chaps 💥
@@leightondavies8884 We're on it! Hank always brings the sunshine to the office! 👉ruclips.net/video/7yvIDDVF0MA/видео.html
I'm waiting for someone to compare patents from Orbea and Specialized.
Being a 2023 Sirrus X5.0 owner. I was pleased so see this similar frame shape by another respected brand. To me it gives an endorsement that this is a good design with benefits despite some saying it is just a marketing gimmick.
By the way, Sirrus is a very comfortable bike to ride. I like it comes with 3 springs of different tensions to tune the Future Shock to just how you like it. You have 4 settings if you like, no spring / soft / medium / firm.
Looks great. I like the lack of cables and the high performance. Would be very interested in this bike
That is one cool bike. My wife and I love our e bikes and as well as doing my own maintenance we get them serviced regularly. But I suppose the belt vs. standard chain is a good thing. With using the bike for commuting we do go through chains and other components. I particularly like the integrated cables and lighting.
Cool to see MTB tech such as dropper posts and Disc brakes making it over to road/commuter cycling.
Love it!!! If people complain about the price point, I mean you're not buying a car if that's the sort of bike you're buying... And cars will nickle and dime you to death over the course of one year! I just got me an Audi with a big honking V8 because it makes sense for me now to own a fun car. I have parking space at home and with the driving I've been doing the last years, I'm looking at around 1000$ per year in fuel costs... Rewind the clock a few years back when I was doing 50000km rather than 5000km per year for work and it's easy to figure out that I've got way more money to play with!!! Most of the time I'm riding either my Focus cyclocross in the summer or the winter bastard I built to cope with the snow and ice here in Canada.
Not owning a car makes it a no-brainer to get this sort of bike instead. Like others pointed out, bike theft is the problem and I think parking solutions for appartments and workplaces are the next logical step society has to take with it's infrastructure. Already, most new offices have showers now so you can change into work clothes after riding there... Having a secure bike shed is the sensible thing to go along with it! Not Just Bikes has a great video about the issue, it's a great watch!!
Just watched a video about the Tesla Cybertruck which looked ridiculous and now this which looks sublime.
Gorgeous bike, amazing feature, and a bit of nostalgic as my first bike, when I was a child, it was an Orbea. But, but... my personal idea of a city bike, and that's the way i've used mine for more than 20 years is: going to work, going to buy some groceries, gym, training, have some (non-alcoholic) drinks withs your friends, a lot of time, my bike must stay on streets with one or two lockers. This is ok with an average bike, however, with a +3000€ bike? It will fly in a blink of your eyes.
All sounds like a good build to me, particularly the belt drive 👍🏻
Do you think belt drive is the future for commuters?
@@gcn makes a huge amount of sense to me, lack of maintenance, keeping clothing grease free.
@@gcnit is not only the future it should be here already for all bikes that go touring or communiting and are not dediated racing stuff like road/gravel bikes or mtbs. Makes life so much easier not to worrie about a chian and also cleaner, the belt drive for me at least doesn't seem to kick up as much grime as a chain.
Tannus inserts are a must on ebikes, after spending 1 hr trying to fix a puncture on a rear hub motor wheel in a commute, i got Tannus and forgot about punctures forever
How did Orbea patent the frame design when it's so similar to the earlier-to-market Specialized Cirrus?
Yes that was my immediate thought.
Even though the compliance juncture (Specialized speak) is basically the same. The top tubes are different and down tube in size and shape. Perhaps there is enough difference in the whole frame for them not to breach patent. Time will tell.
The truth is... Both Specialized and Orbea are likely copying the award-winning design of Geometry X from 2022's IF and Red Dot. Just search online to find out.
I think it’s a super cool option, great for commuting or those who struggle on a regular bike. I don’t understand the annoyance over e bikes. Keep bringing new releases when they happen! And you might not want to do those dance moves in public when you have your kids with you
I wish you guys would review more mid range commuter bikes and not just top end cycles, a high end race bike is already out of my price range, THIS is £5,299.
As a rule we actually never do reviews here at GCN. What bikes would you like to see us show off more?
@@gcn I'd love to see a comparison of groupsets in a range of budgets at the very least, noone has really done anything that shows what the real world difference of going from sora to tiagra to 105 is for example
The bike seems really cool, really loved the video, I wish there was a non e-bike version for someone like me, but I love the market they’re addressing and I hope this will get more people cycling 🚴
Since you are not able to replace the battery, this is bike for about 5 years, if you are lucky and the battery lasts that long.
Would that hold you back from purchasing this bike?
@@gcnofc
It might. A non-replaceable battery on something that costly is disappointing. Everything else about the bike had me reaching for my wallet. That might be a deal breaker for me. :-(@@gcn
It's a short life premium product which we shouldn't really be buying, consumers should be avoiding proprietary technology on ebikes. If you break the frame, motor or wear out the battery its basically heading to landfill as it likely won't be economic to repair.
You can replace the battery, it's just been designed to be safe from theft first and foremost.
Nice looking bike! Winner
Beautiful bike!❤
An integrated lock with plug in cable / chain would have completed the package as would some kinda permanent lock off facility of the electrics via the app.
This bike looks awesome
Looks terrific, thoughtfully designed. Price is an issue, and AirTag facility aside, it’s going to be very attractive to thieves. But as the summary at the end said, it’s perhaps best viewed as a hassle-free car alternative. If secure parking is available, then it becomes a real possibility for anyone who can afford it. And if Orbea want to lend me one, I’m happy to do a long-term review… ;-)
I like it. Would it work ok on tow paths and rougher footpaths as well as in town?
Super similar to the Serial1 in the US, looks dope
Looks great. Needs a full belt guard like a dutch bike
Finally. They've got it right.
Great bicycle! Maybe not for me because it looks like its about 20 kg but I really appreciate ale the clever solutions, like belt, good lights and so on. The one thing i do not like is the lack of the system screen. When I ride I want to forget about my smartphone and all the notificiations...
Looks great and nice fearures. My only concern would be the cost of replacing the battery since it's build-in
Thanks for keeping us up to date with the amazing developments in the world of cycling, pretty superb range of bikes here, especially the top of the range one. As ever the concern would be theft. Would I be happy to leave it outside a shop even with a decent lock? Probably not.
I’ve had a trek super commuter 9+, for several years, the bike is bulletproof and does all the things that the diem does, seems like all manufacturers are simply following this but seem to be 5-6 years behind the curve
Is that one an Ebike? ⚡
Yeah, Bosch cx, 500wh battery, hub geared, virtually maintenance free, still chain driven, but built in lights, mudguards, rack, etc. great bike and never skipped a beat
Price and weight? The integrated battery is a no no for me. I store my commuter bike outdoors and charge it indoors.
This is great. Which size is Si riding?
Man, I want it so bad
"This is what happened to me. I bought a bike last year when I didn't know much about bicycles. But now, my knowledge has expanded and you are one of those who helped, GCN, so thank you very much. In my experience, it's hard to park a $440 RB/GB bike anywhere, especially if your bike is expensive, specifically here in our area. Because if it's a commuter bike, it should be cheap. I admit, the expensive ones are more enjoyable."
Brilliant set of features on the 10 and 20 - quite similar to Tenways offerings (which I am considering buying). But, I'm guessing, at a much higher price.
It would be good to see a comparison of Orbea and Tenways bikes.
Great Dad dance
Si was rocking these moves way before he became a dad 🕺
Very interesting set of choices! For me would have to be able to bring battery inside in winter. How much 'spring' is there in the frame? I made an e-bike out of a hard tail mtn. bike and that was a little error as need a suspension at speed. Like the clean look! Maybe would want narrower bars, don't know till ride it. Price is for me a concern too
I think more people would be happy to invest in this kind of bike if they thought it was safe from being stolen. The best city bike is one that doesn’t look like it’s worth stealing.
I like it. If I only have the money...
Which model of the Enviolo hub is it? Did you feel the gear range was sufficient? Any thoughts on this settup against the Pinion mgu?
The bike is cool but missing the removable battery option.
the main problem in the UK is that you can’t leave any bike outside for more than a minute without it being stolen - and beautiful bikes like these, that cost as much as a small car will be nabbed the moment you take your eye off them, even if they are locked. You can only ride in this country if you can secure your bike indoors at either end of your journey.
Looks great! wonder if you could set a baby seat on the rear rack?
Ooo that ticks all the right boxes. Mid motor, CV auto drive. Could it even be a touring machine? Ride to the next pub to overnight and recharge? You're other video said it cost 20p for a full charge, that's some cheap transport. Can I have a borrow for a LEJOG Mr Orbea?
My partner commutes to work in windy and snowy Uppsala. The conditions on the bike tracks are diabolical in regards to salt and gravel in winter, rain, melted snow, ice, and wind which take a cinsiderable toll on brake pads, chains, and tyres. If Orbea wanted to test their lovely new commuter bike in the harshest conditions ever by a e-bike sceptic, then my partner would begrudgingly accept the offer of testing their new commuter bike for free.
Seems like a good bike. Curious on how to change a rear tyre though?
Si, since you're "super interested" in our thoughts, here's mine. This 5k+ gbp bike, built around Shimano's budget Cues group and deploying proprietary solutions which nobody will be able to maintain unless they are able to spend 1k on servicing cost when things go bad, is a bike for a typical detached champagne socialist. They live of other people's backs, don't have a car (or at least they don't have a car whilst they reside in their central London mansion, but have two or three cars in the south of France and at least one of those cars is a Tesla, the other two are Rrrrangie and Rrrrari). They also like to fly business or private everywhere, especially when they fly to their next Tedx conference where they tell poor people how they should live their lives (things like not using heating to lower their CO2 footprint, allowing rolling blackouts for the sake of saving the planet, eating insect protein - to name the few). BTW, they love poor people and call them "darlings" and find their struggles "cute". And because of this I find this bike revolting.
I love it , reminds me of the Specialised Como sl… how much?
Love this bike already at the double butted fenders, a coaster brake version would be even better for Dutch use, one bad bike rack neighbour and disk brakes are done
Orbea seem to have got very much right with this bike and it certainly has the looks. However, it’s not feasible for me living in a city apartment building. Since the bike has to come with the battery for charging it’s just not practical. Our apartment is two flights of stairs up from the entrance and a bike doesn’t fit inside the lift. But I’m sure it’s a banging bike for those who have the means and somewhere they can charge. I’m staying on my single speed for now.
First thought: ooh, pretty. And then a hard no on the bike shifting itself: technology shouldn't presume and I'm even irritated that my car locks my doors for me. Just no. Should have known Orbea would have that sorted though, so by the end of the vid back to ooh, pretty.
PS: Nice air guitar, Si.
Nice concept, but only a long term review will test the execution
2:10 “Roadie discovers a dropper post,” colorized

Is Si left handed?! Oh, sorry, good video - v informative and kinda encourages me to investigate it!
I'd probably buy the Orbea Diem 20 than a car. Carpe Diem
I understand that GCN is a global news channel, but it would be good in these reviews if you could let us know what the price of each model is (in the UK at least), and what is the competition for each bike at that price range. Ideally stating which is your recommended model.
If you have to ask... It's likely most will be sold via a cycle to work scheme anyway
Not going to happen, Orbea is a sponsor, this is just another advert.
@@GaryM-ft7pw what a silly thing to say. Imagine watching QVC (i.e. non-cycling version of GCN) and not being provided prices -> manlike Garrrrrrry "if you can't afford dem fake gold earrings...".
@@keinpietz7697 QVC is a retailer GCN is light entertainment/advertising
Very nice bike. My only problem with this bike is the phone holder. If your don’t own a Samsung or Apple you will not find a fitting cases and I really dislike fat cases anyway. Sadly I can’t find weight infos for this bike.
And I think that people which might buy this bike will be people actively riding this bike. This means they don’t need this strong motor and big battery but would prefer less weight. A city bike often needs to get carried over stairs etc and that’s when every kilo counts.
I really like internal gear hubs. I commute each day over 22km of gravel road and a belt/IGH is maintenance free where a chain would need constant cleaning etc.
The bike is lovely, but I have a few major issues. First and the biggest one is the Integrated battery. As an urban bike I might want to lock it somewhere and just carry battery to charge it in the office. Another issue is repairability, since the batteries are consumable it is one piece that is guaranteed to fail in a few years. Second major issue for me is the the price. Let me explain. Bicycles are among the most commonly stolen possessions. I can't imagine locking bike this outside shops, or cinema and leave it unattended for an hour or so. In most places hiding an air tag won't really prevent theft and the police won't help you retrieve your bike even if you provide the location. In conclusion: this bike is nice. Maybe a little bit too nice to be a practical urban bike.
Could you review the canyon pathlite:on SL?
Very nice. But unless it's too pricey, less people will purchase it hence lesser bike commuters (also take into consideration the country where you'll use it).
I’ve got a déjà vu with Matt from carwow
I'm always playing banging toons when on the bike, because people hear me easier coming 😅.
What's your go-to banger? 🎵
Depends on the mood, metal, punk, ska-punk, latino beats or edm. A good finnish industrial metal band is Turmion Kätilöt wich translates to Midwifes of Doom 😅
WOW, this thing is the Mercedes of bicycles, I'd be scarred to park it anywhere though for fear of getting stolen.
People would pull out a gun to rob u
What about ease of changing the battery if any issue?
Indeed I had Spanish made Ebike and the battery failed after about 3000Miles, charges enough to get about 2 miles, it's a design specific to the range as it was then and can't get a replacement. They left the UK market when we left the EU.
Nice bike. But how easy is it to remove the rear wheel? What instruments do we need to have with us to do that outside?
From my experience, you would use a tubeless setup and just plug a puncture (not that you would get that many with a good puncture resistant tyre)
Where I can put the airtag?
Does the frame really change the ride that much?
The Mercedes Benz of bikes.
It would be nice if there were a YT-CHANNEL called EMBN.
Nah we would never see that working 😉
I think this could be a great choice for a young professional to get around, unquestionably consumer friendly & robust in design. I really like that they went with a belt and IGH. The one concern I have is about integrated cable routing. It’s certainly clean looking, but from a maintenance standpoint it’s less than ideal. Internal cabling running through the stem can be an infuriating setup for repair. For a broader audience, I think it needs to be more capable. I’m more 😅interested in e-bikes like the Tern Orox that are hauling machines than this, but I think both have a place in the market.
Thanks for such a detailed comment! There are so many different styles of E-bike out there. The Orbea is great for hauling lots of stuff in a compact package. Do you consider maintenance costs when buying a new bike?
Love your jacket…is it for sale?
Thanks and yep - it will be - although not quite yet. If you check back at the GCN shop towards the end of the month - in the AGU section - they should be available: gcn.eu/aB5

Ultimate city bike take a standard frame and build a fixie you got your self a fast, fun and low maintanance bike
Fixies are great but not so much if you live in a super hilly area. Bikes like this really help brake down the barriers of cycling 🙌
@@gcnI know it´s not for everyone it was more of a joke objectivly that bike is better than a fixie in pretty much every way except from maybe the cost.
Bike is sweet! Is the battery actually removable? How much U.S. currency?
#askGCN on the hub drive e bikes, can you put the normal rear wheel and drive it as a normal bike? I have a sub 12kg ebike and am interested if this conversation might be possible.
Excellent bike, well thought out. Hope it does well for Orbea. Lovely setting, too.
I hope I never have to buy a bike that depends for ANY part of its functionality on an app. Why? Because when the company goes out of business, the bike stops working. Or when they decide they want more money out of you, they add a subcription fee that you have to pay just to keep riding the bike you've already paid for. It's also a strong indicator that the parts will not be serviceable by local bike shops, but only by returning the whole bike and paying a massive premium. This bike costs over 5 grand and it will be landfill in 5 years.
Given a bike like this has a huge battery, seems like adding some active antitheft tech like a bluetooth key, alarm and immobiliser would be a no brainer. I definitely prefer a removable battery so my ebike can live in my van. Looks like it would make a great tourer too.
This is a "I have a car big enough to safely transport my bike to the dealership" kind of bike. Low maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance. If one does have the spare time and money to get their bike to a licensed mechanic, then it's great, but I like to do small to medium repairs myself. So a big no for me. I could justify it, if it was a proper cargo bike for paid work, but not for lifestyle.
EDIT: And as a hobby carpenter and truss enthusiast this frame design gives me the shivers.
What part of this bike would you like to be able to work on? ⚙
@@gcn In this case, mostly the battery. And It's not about IF there's a way to get to the battery, but how much effort is it. Especially preventative maintenance. The harder it is to thoroughly inspect the state of a component, the less inclined the average user is to do it. That includes all the electricals on this bike. I haven't had a good look, but having lights and the related circuitry inside the frame, especially if it's a non-standard form factor, is difficult to access, therefore increasing technician working time per bike, and part availability +10 years down the line. A $+5k E-bike becomes an expensive paperweight or garden deco if the battery/electricals form factor is propriatory and the manufacturer stopped producing replacement parts or went out of business. Even a 5 year guarantee would be pretty useless unless there's government reinforcement.
Out-of-frame battery and electricals are ugly, but, when push comes to shove, extremely convenient.
How did you manage to avoid the traffic in Bath for long enough to do a whole report…?! Did I miss the bit where you mentioned the price?
Can I get one of these with an Al frame? What about a molded fiber reinforced thermoplastic frame? After all aerospace is moving to these materials.
As much as I would like one of these 5k for a commuter bike is way out of my budget.
Yes, these are actually great all around bikes.
But still way too expensive.
Bike seems really cool. I feel bad for any mechanics that need to work on it.
That's why you pay a mechanic though 😉
I predict the commenters who hate GCN for sponsored content, and yet still watch, won’t have a problem with this one. You commenters are funny people.
We've done good then? 🎬
You’re right. It’s like Alan always says, “ I wish the people who don’t like our sponsored content would just not comment and stop watching GCN entirely.”
will I still be able to get spare parts for it in 5 years time when things inevitably wear and break .... or do I need to bin it and buy another 6k bike every 5 years ?
I enjoy the bikepacking and presenters do goofy stuff content and know that these videos are only possible with sponsored videos in-between like this one. I feel like the sponsored content is a bit much these days though.
😮😮
That was our reaction exactly 🙌
Lovely bike but it will not be long before all the thieves know where the air tag is kept. A proper built in tracker would be nice

I can see J.K. Starley smiling.
when you dont paddle at higher speeds, what happens to the gear?
Doh! You didn’t mention the max speed or wattage, whether there’s a throttle, or if the battery can be removed.
I would guess that the battery could be removed but first you would have to like remove the motor so you could get to the battery. So in other words probably yes but it will probably be pain in the butt. 😀
It obviously complies with the EU pedelec regulations so why do they need to mention it? They are all the same.
A throttle would make it illegal as a pedal assist vehicle here in the UK.
man I feel like this looks exactly like the new Specilized frame ...
Is that a bad thing?
None removable battery is a deal breaker. I have about Orbea with a battery that is now only 50% of its original range and would cost about £750 to replace. The last integrated battery bike I will buy!
