Great mall walkabout. This is the first time I had the chance to visually tour the Chesterfield Mall. What a beautiful mall it is. The beautiful mod touches make this mall plan truly something special. The octagon carved designs on the ceilings, key. The highlight of this episode for me was getting a glimpse of the huge mid-century mod mobile @ 3:35 hanging from the mall ceiling. I have a mini version of the same mobile hanging over my bed in my bedroom. It's so colorful and whimsical. It makes me smile. I love it. Anyways, thx Dommie for taking us along to shop @ the Chesterfield Mall. It was a treat. Moving forward, I wish Ms. Chesterfield Mall a brighter future. Have a great week.

One thing that should be mentioned in regards to Chesterfield Mall is how the opening of the two upscale outlet malls right down the road from here played a HUGE factor in this mall's downswing. One of the reasons this mall seemingly started to fail "out of nowhere" is that no one really thought much about those outlet malls and their placement. They had a lot more upscale stores - and cheaper prices - than the shops in Chesterfield, and their opening was BIG news. Initially they were looking at Chesterfield becoming a new sports complex-type place, but that's since been transferred to the former St. Louis Mills mall, so it's only a matter of time before this mall closes its doors imo, unless someone takes a vested interest in it.

Good video of the mall. Its sad how far its sunk, but its been sinking an long time now; almost 20 years its taken to slowly get to this point. Hull also owns the semi-dead Alton Mall which has been in that state as long as I can remember; but Chesterfield is a much different place that won't tolerate the place sitting to rot like St Louis County will. The real estate this place sits on, unlike Jamestown Mall is some of the most prime in the St Louis area. Hull was wanting TIFs for redevelopment, but some in Chesterfield are already crying for eminent domain if the place is not redeveloped given Hull's track record. Their idea of redeveloping Alton Square was putting in a Ross...

The first nail in the coffin was Chesterfield Commons, a TWO MILE LONG outdoor big box shopping center about a mile west. Then in 2013, TWO outlet malls opened in Chesterfield (one of which is already dying and being turned (supposedly) into an entertainment complex next to Topgolf.

I grew up in Chesterfield and my mom took me to the grand opening of Chesterfield Mall. I can recall being at the mall during the holiday season and it was so crowded you had a hard time walking to the store you wanted to get to. Far cry now compared to what it used to be. Sad.

As of 2021, the mall is still open but the only anchor store in operation is Macy's. There are badminton and pickleball courts set up in the center and the carousel is long gone. They have now walled up the entrances to Sears and Dillard's, which is very strange to see. It's like they never existed.

Mall death is like the Stars, they are big and shinny for awhile, but slowly they cool off to tiny stellar relics of themselves.

I did some research on this mall out of curiosity. The mall was purchased by the Staenberg Group early in 2020, which means Chesterfield made it through two years of Hull with no major renovations, which IMO is a miracle. Although Staenberg has plans to demolish the mall to turn it into _another_ walkable lifestyle center, the mall still seems to be open as of 2022 in spite of having very low occupancy.

Nice video of this mall. I didn't realize Hull owned it now, that's a bummer to hear. Also like others, I definitely greatly underestimated how quickly this mall is declining! I wouldn't be surprised if remaining stores like Eddie Bauer were just bidding their time till their lease expires, then close at this mall.
I will take it you also visited Saint Louis Mills, on this same trip? I'd love to get both here and to St. Louis Mills, if I do revisit Saint Louis anytime soon. And I second/third/fourth(?) all the others, in that you should do a special Sears video!

Thanks DG! I don't know what it is, but I've always enjoyed the mall atmosphere around the xmas holiday season. I feel like in a few years, theres going to be no malls left to go to.

Sister mall to Jamestown, I feel that needs to be edited to BIG sister of Jamestown it’s definitely bigger with the two stories.
Also I think a Sears documentary would be a fantastic idea

Marc Brown true, Jamestown has really fallen apart over the years. I made documentary on it that I think shows that pretty well.

It's August 20, 2023. The race is on to acquire more land from parts of property surrounding the Chesterfield Mall. Gone is the "Master Plan: of areas with green spaces --plans are underway for a Sea of Concrete/High End Houses ($1 million plus on small land areas) and street after street after street and plans for a Downtown Chesterfield complete with approx 3,000 apartments, a Corporate Office Building, a High Rise Hotel, retail/restaurants on the ground floor with various 'types of businesses "and demolishing the Mall completely -- except Dillard's still owns their building. Where will everyone park? Some say there will be a parking garage and others say it will be a place for bikes because the people who will live in the apartments won't need a car. Around the perimeter stand completed and in production hundreds of apartments and private homes on land previously planned to be open and green with some construction but not a "city within a city". With a major highway on one side with a short exit lane and a short entry lane, Clarkson Road, a road with limited exit and entrance and no way to expand with new buildings, traffic jams that make life challenging in either direction on the Hwy starting around 5:00 AM and lasting past 8:30 AM and from around 3:00 PM until around 7:30 PM with major traffic from all directions as Chesterfield has grown and so have neighboring areas so it's bumper to bumper in both directions. Short streets to go in and out of the development and it appears no way to park directly at the "new" renovation except perhaps a high rise parking lot -- paid or free? Tax reduction/abatement -- no one wants to talk about it -- multiple years so the "older" residents will "foot the bill" in higher taxes for this "dream city within a city". Lived in Chesterfield since the 1970's -- this was not the Master Plan of the original man who saw Chesterfield as green, open, family centered and community concerned. Oh, but this couldn't be built where the now struggling Outlet Malls were built -- BECAUSE THAT'S IN A FLOOD PLAIN -- or so I was recently told. It would also probably be a challenge for the local Airport, where small planes, some military, some privately owned and some usage by a Not For Profit, Wings of Hope, operate. As they say, another originally proposed "Green Area" bites the dust for the same reason --- money, money, money! What a difference a few years make when local Government is desperate to add to their bottom line because other deals they've made for "big buildings" along the highway and near the "Chesterfield Mall were probably given long periods of low taxation or abatement.

The colour scheme actually reminds me a bit of a local-ish mall that is now pretty much dead, or almost dead. It's been a while since I've last been there but apparently it's dying even faster (Czechia, dead malls aren't endemic to the US)
