I´ve seen some reviews of Photolob 8, but I have to say that your review makes the differences very clear. The examples which you use are very useful to see the improvements. For sure everybody has to decide by himself if he wants to upgrade, but here you can see that these improvement are not only kind of theoretical, but very real. Thank you for that.
Once again, a very in-depth look at software with real world applications. On the tone curve: Capture One can adjust the standard RGB, Red, Green and Blue curves. But it also has a luminosity curve adjustment which does not affect saturation. I find it very useful to have both as I tend to use one for bright areas and the other for darker areas without the need for separate adjustment layers.
Hi Matti, I really like the LARGE PREVIEW MAGNIFIER, this will appeal to a lot of photographers. And who doesn't want less Noise in there photos. Nice presentation And you explained the features well. Thanks Matti. 😊
Thank you! Could you not have used PL8’s new Compare feature to illustrate the differences between old and new versions? Some nice improvements but always incremental with DxO. Still no major new features like panoramas and AI masking.
I’ve been holding off on an upgrade from 6 as there just didn’t seem to be much for me in 7. I already had a play around this morning and I’m happy with some of the changes. The luma curve thing makes a lot more sense to me after this video, will likely use the full trial before buying the upgrade.
It at this point, not sure I see enough of a difference to upgrade my version of 7 Elite. Only if the upgrade price isn't ridiculous, otherwise I will likely pass. The noise reduction is very slightly improved, the preview magnifier is nice update but again is it worth a full upgrade?
Sure, to each their own. We all have different preferences. However, the noise reduction is more than very slightly improved, in my opinion, because those ugly artifacts are gone. The best noise reduction option in PL7 is practically useless because of that. But to be honest the second best option is pretty good too and sufficient for most noisy photos.
im ok with the current version of the software :) i dont get rid all the noise. and the results for me are good enough. interesting though since i haven't had the software for at least a year and theres already a new version out. thanks for the video :)
I only use the Nik Collection software. That too seems to be going thorugh rapid changes, but the changes are very incremental, the prices sadly are not. I am with you as far as noise is concerned. I must say that if someone developed algorithms to help with scanned B&W images from film, then they will have my attention.
@@mattisulantoagreed. I am happy with upgrading every other year. That way there is noticeable improvements and I still get the maximum current user discount.
The one thing I don't like about DXO is they don't support built in lens profiles. I have my reasons for why I want to use them over DXO lens profiles. For example if I'm second shooting a wedding with a lead photographer that is full frame I might put my camera in 3:2 ratio and I want the framing to be just how I saw it. I'll tell the lead photographer to just apply the 3:2 ratio in Lightroom so it matches how I saw it. DXO lens profile sometimes you see more and somethings there are things off to the side that I wish was not in the image. What if I'm doing video and photos then I want the same lens profile for video and photo. DXO should let you pick what you want. Now I understand some brands don't let raw editors read the lens profile but the ones that do like Micro Four Thirds let me pick what I want.
@@mattisulanto Just following up Matti I purchased dxo 8 and viewpoint with your affiliate link. Happy to support you and thanks for all your content 🍻
Topaz PhotoAI looks terrible in their examples on their website. For example the shot of the church steeple on their website has some obvious AI hallucinations. I’d skip it personally.
DXO needs to improve its filters for metadata/exif data. Already Lightroom 6 had a better filter system with subsequent filters like date, body, lens, aperture, speed, ISO, focal range etc pp.. Also a statitistic about how many images are made with... (again Exif data) would be nice. The data is there already and DXO is also indexinh at least part of these data. But they do not have the easy to use filter and display like LR6.
There is a feature called Creative Vignetting even in PL6 and with that you can add vignetting in post. If that's what you mean. I still think upgrade from PL6 to PL8 is worth it.
@@mattisulanto Well yes, the feature is there, but you apparently must unlock it with the Film Pack if you want to use it. Someone said this also applies to the luma curve as well. In PL6 Elite, there is nothing in the "Watermarking and effects" tab besides watermarking.
I forgot: DXO should allow to put the index library file somewhere else/ on a different drive. It is too risky to have this in a subfolder of Windows. If your system crashes, the index is gone. Would be better to have it on the same drive like the photos. Nos on the drive on which you have the Windows/OS.

Thanks. I did not know CO has the luma curve as well. It's such a neat feature.

What is a major new features depends on who is looking. Anyway, a panorama features would be really nice.

With the trial version you can take your time and see if the upgrade is for you.
@@mattisulanto yeah that's how they got me with the original purchase, after a month of using it it just felt right and its been my go to ever since.

Thanks! They seem to release a new version roughly once a year. Probably makes no sense to upgrade every time.

Capture One Pro has has a Luma Curve feature and a Color/Hue Mask feature for years.

I used regular deep prime because XD had too many odd artifacts. This upgrade looks quite nice 👌
This version fixes that issue.
@@mattisulanto wish they added some AI mask tool for quick selections, that would be nice

@@UpgradeLemonade Thank you so much for the support. I hope you'll like PL8 and find the new features useful.
Bring panorama and hdr blending to photolab and thousands of people will switch from Lightroom
I seldom need those so I have never paid attention to the lack of them. But if you are into panorama or HDR then PL can't do it for you.
Would be interested in a comparison with Topaz PhotoAI

I have Pure Raw 4 and PL 7...does PL 8 offer improvements over PR4
Nothing significant in my opinion.

Still no fake vignette without the Film Pack though, right? Such a basic feature. Still, might upgrade my PL6, actually.
