    Anybody considering an Ascent is strongly advised to take it on a LONG test drive that includes conditions other than your typical situations. We failed to do that and were shocked to see the different behavior it exhibited. The issues are mainly related to the peculiar behavior of the CVT transmission, which can shift randomly and multiple times in very simple circumstances. The engine is also undersized at 2.4L for such a heavy vehicle, which causes the turbo to very routinely kick-in to provide the power needed. It's a very comfortable ride, but the engine noise is always quite loud for the driver and front seat passenger. It's VERY truck-like in that regard. Again, that CVT might also require you to completely re-learn the relationship between gas pedal and speed.

    I’ve had my 2020 Ascent Limited (US Version) for a year. Love it. Smooth, quiet, affordable, and it fits our family great. I would highly recommend it, or any other Subaru, to anyone shopping. For reference, we’ve had a 2013 Ford Flex and 2018 Highlander. Flex was great, but compromised. Hated the Highlander and traded it before my lease was up.

      I’m a huge Subaru fan and have had subarus for the last 10 years. My current Subaru is a 2020 ascent. I’ve had it for close to 2 years and can say it’s an excellent car. My wife has a Lexus rx350 - and I’m happier driving the ascent than the rx350!
      One question for you: the highlander always grabs my attention and I’ve often thought of getting one over the Subaru. What didn’t you like it?

    Love your videos, but one thing you need to mention with Subaru products is the Symmetrical All Wheel Drive, which is far superior compared to other generic, on demand AWD systems from other manufacturers. I owned a Honda CRV before, and going to a 2015 Forester XT and now a 2021 Outback XT Limited is like night & day in terms of traction in bad weather. The safety, value and sure footedness in adverse conditions is why people by Subarus.

This is partially the reason why people go to a different manufacturer, or buy older Subarus with the proven but antiquated 4eat/5eat transmissions. Although the latter is a bit finicky.

    I owned a new 2020 Ascent for about 6 weeks. I could never drive it smoothly in traffic congestion, or else in neighborhoods where a "light touch" was needed to continually vary speeds in the 5 to 30 mph range. There was repeated "lumpy" power delivery when trying to be delicate, and this is not evident when driving moderately or driving hard. Mine was not unique, as I found in Subaru forums. The dealer concluded it was "just the way the CVT and turbo are tuned from the factory".

    With an incredible plethora of SUV/CUV options it can be difficult to stand out. Toyota sells 3-5 THOUSAND... RAV4’s a month in Canada! If you haven’t seen/heard of one, it is because Subaru struggles to sell 300 to 400 a month. And because it looks like a Forester that ‘fell of it’s diet’. And if you don’t want to be noticed... it has become almost like the perfect incognito vehicle. Thank God it doesn’t look like their Edsel-grilled Tribeca. I’m not sure I’ve ever even seen a review (or video) on the Ascent. Being this unique and so unknown, I would absolutely consider it. Thanks for another interesting review.

    Good review. Two concerns with this car: 1) Subaru engines have been criticized for issues with burning oil and head gasket failures. Has there been any evidence these problems have been eliminated? 2) Eyesight works well in clear conditions but is reportedly unreliable in hard rain, snow, and fog which is when you need the assist most. How does Eyesight performance compare vs systems on Kia/Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, et al?

    • @benniewalker312
      @benniewalker312 3 года назад

      The engine in the Ascent is a new engine for the model. The FA24. No oil burning issues at all. The same engine has made its way into XT Outback and Legacy XT. On the eyesight issues. The two conditions I’ve seen where eyesight cuts off. Early morning fog covering the top of the windshield. Snow not cleared from the windshield. Direct blinding glare from the sun. For most normal rain and the wipers going the system works fine. In a complete deluge where there is no visibility the system may cut off. In those situations I would much rather trust myself than any automated system. The most annoying thing for me is the Rear Assist Braking. Even a small branch or hanging vine will cause the vehicle to slam on the brakes when backing up.

    • @Basically_a_nobody
      @Basically_a_nobody 3 года назад +3

      Excessive oil burn is covered under warranty and Subaru's have not had any head gasket issues since their early 2000's model cars with different engines.
      Also, in my opinion in heavy rain, or fog is when you need eyesight the least. Its when the driver should take the most control to drive the vehicle and not leave it up to software. Just my opinion

    • @IKhanNot
      @IKhanNot 3 года назад +1

      @@Basically_a_nobody Oil consumption is only covered if the motor is burning more than 1 quart per 750 miles. Your engine can be burning a quart per 900 miles and they'll deny the claim and tell you to top off the oil. If a high mileage car from the 90s doesn't burn oil there's no excuse for a new car to do so.

    Bought my Ascent Limited Jan 2 2019. When it was new the only issue was the stereo going mute for no apparent reason. A couple trips to the dealership to update the head unit and 30,000 miles later the only thing I’ve needed are scheduled oil changes every 6 months. This vehicle is an absolute snow beast. The new Onyx Edition gives the vehicle a little more personality but it still is very unremarkable in appearance. The only reason I would trade it in would be for another vehicle of similar size but with a plug in hybrid or full EV.

    Great points, but Subaru has got to get past "bland". The Ascent is desperately in need of a re-branding and make-over. Sadly, Subaru never incorporates the design concepts of their prototypes into the actual vehicles. The Ascent prototype would have changed the game for Subaru, which tends to be way too conservative. I think Subaru was just content with making a larger Forester (as you mentioned) to expand into the 6-7 seven seater SUV space. Hopefully, they learn a lesson from Kia and Hyundai the next time around, or even Toyota (with a hybrid version). I'm a Subaru fan (had the Forester) and my wife currently has the Legacy. I asked her about an Ascent and she said, "why? what's the difference other than the size, both look the same inside and pretty much drive the same". Silence on my part as I pondered her response, we ended up with the Highlander Hybrid.

I has to do with a sensor that doesn't allow everything to shut down when the rear door is open.) If you stay in suburbia and run from your car to the house, no problem. However, I camp and compete in a sport with my dogs. When my dogs are crated in the back, I need the back door open. Why is a car marketed for outdoor "adventures" have this design? My 2020 Ascent would be perfect if you could keep air in the tires. I live in an arid sparsely populated area. I continually loose air. It has been in the shop 3 times. The solution - add air. Not easy to do unless you carry an air tank around which is my solution because I can’t trade right now.

    I wish that all 3 row suv’s should have the seating option of NO third row. I don’t mean fold it down and pretend it isn’t there. I mean more storage space with no seats! Familes of 3 or 4 people might not need that last row but do need the space. I have driven a vehicle with the last row and in the 13 years, so far, that I have owned it, have only used that row about 4 times……I don’t need it. I am sure that I am not alone in this. If you feel the need to send me negative comments about removing the seats or just leaving them down, please don’t, because everyone has a right to their opinion and mine is that I would like the option of more storage space, not a third row, from the factory. I understand fully what I could do, I just think that manufacturers should consider this.

    Here's a quiz. What are the slowest selling 3 row mainstream SUVs in North America. For 2021 the Mazda CX-9 holds its place as the worst selling vehicle. Barely above the Mazda is the Subaru Ascent. What distinguishes the CX-9 and the Ascent from their rivals?
    First and foremost is the lone offering of a turbo 4 in each vehicle when nearly all their rivals offer standard or optional V6 or hybrid alternatives. Then there are the transmissions. The Subaru offers only a CVT and the Mazda provides only a long-in-the-tooth six speed conventional AT. Every rival offers either a conventional torque converter AT or a DCT. The Ascent's (and the CX-9's) drivetrain may be adequate for a family hauler but it doesn't stand out in any significant way.
    The bottom line is that Subaru's strong reputation among its loyal customer base stems from reliability and unique offerings. The Ascent's early teething problems (by no means unique among any new model) put a dent in the reliability reputation. The fact that Ascent is simply not unique in any positive way compared to its rivals has been a continuing issue.

    Ascent is just okay, in my opinion. It's a decent first effort for Subaru on a "new" model, but it just isn't quite competitive with some of the competition. The interior and tech are about two classes below Palisade/Telluride (more on par with the crappy American offerings like the Explorer and Traverse), and it doesn't have the roominess of an Atlas. Highlander is also a much nicer option than this.

    • @Basically_a_nobody
      @Basically_a_nobody 3 года назад +1

      The issue with a Subaru CVT is not the CVT. Its Subaru of America's insistence that the CVT is a sealed transmission that does not need to be serviced. It needs to be serviced like any other transmission and proper care will have it just as long as any other transmission. Mr. Subaru's vehicles have proven that.
      Also, Subaru's haven't had a headgasket issue since the early 2000's lol.

We loved everything about(especially size and comfort), but since the beginning we had issues with the warped rotors. After 2 years and 7,200 miles the transmission started shifting weird as well. My wife does all city driving and was getting 15-18 mpg. We decided to trade it a few months ago on a highlander hybrid. I love the highlander, but she misses the size and feel of the ascent. If I could have found a deal on another one, I would have given it another chance. Deals were horrible.
