Environment variables are for the environment... your environment is your operating system. Java is running on your OS so for that you have to configure your environment for that with the environment variable. Java's default environment variable is JAVA_HOME. This variable will be set to your jdk bin directory. This config allows you to run Java on your OS. Variables in the Java programs don't impact the environment or OS unless you use the system libraries. Hope this helps.

you have to click the installer not the compressed files for java to be installed. I pressed the compressed files on accident and it screwed me up.

I had the same problem, you may have fixed it already but what I did was restart vs code and it started working.

For java even i create the path in my windows 11 and when i search in command prompt it didnt show me 😢 even i set the path
I tried too in the command prompt but it didn't work at first. Then i entered a space between the java and --version, and it worked. Hope it helps.
