  • Is it plain old naked discrimination for small channels, bias by the bots, or punishment for those still refusing to drink the google coolaid? No one outside of RUclips corporate headquarters can really know... but there's something happening here.

    Soooo many comments! Let me condense the major threads you are posting:
    1) A great many FranLab subscribers have not gotten notifications of my new videos for months.
    2) Many subscribers have discovered they were automatically unsubbed by RUclips without their knowledge.
    3) Mysteriously, THIS video is trending.
    4) Channels that receive support from Patreon but not Google ads are being ghosted out of recommendations on RUclips.
    5) My fellow content creators overwhelmingly suggest that monetization may now be a requirement for participation on the platform.

      #5 almost makes sense, if RUclips only makes money off selling ads to advertisers, and you post a video they can't put ads in, why would they push the content that eats bandwidth without a return on investment?
      just a thought.

    • @rnrbishop
      @rnrbishop 5 лет назад +31

      I subbed to you ages ago and like you say I stopped getting notifications and as I am an occasional viewer of yours I didn't notice for a while. Up this video pops in my feed, I click on it and there you go, I am somehow unsubscribed.

    • @seanclark8452

      RUclips still benefits via platform lock-in. If almost all great content is on RUclips, then viewers will stay for the convenience even if the content is also elsewhere. But if great stuff is only on other platforms then views will move or split their visits and that'd give a rival traction. It seems like google is trying to thread the needle and juuust useful enough to keep that from happening, but no more.

    • @jsomething2
      @jsomething2 5 лет назад +10

      @@seanclark8452 that does make sense, they make money in way more ways than just the simple stuff we normally think of. just opening the app gets a ad in from of us.
      that being said, I've seen people moving to other video platforms over this stuff.

    • @nigelbuckie403
      @nigelbuckie403 5 лет назад +9

      I guess RUclips is same as google and Facebook they control who sees what and when according to how much you pay them. Easy to test just do a paid ad or post on Facebook business.... suddenly he gate is open and look how many likes you get. Do another post unpaid and you get virtually no response. It's the same with websites and google....so these now big so called friendly platforms are actually just corporate money making machines.... what happened to the internet....

    • @techstormster

    @EEVblog 5 лет назад +298

    • @Will_RM
      @Will_RM 5 лет назад +30

      Yes, re- monetize your channel and see what happens. I will try to find the article, but another education channel, that was not monetizing there content was being threatened by YT that there content would be removed unless YT would be able to run ads on it. YT of course takes the biggest cut when ads run on videos and if they can't make money off your content, they will not promote it. I do believe April is around the time I heard YT was trying this, so it makes sense that, this is the time you started seeing the drop off.

    • @kingearwig
      @kingearwig 5 лет назад +11

      When you consider the sheer scale of storing (At least 400 hours per minute is uploaded!) and delivering RUclips content on demand it does make sense that they would prioritise videos that generate them revenue to contribute to the massive running costs.
      If you believe the available statistics then RUclips doesn't quite break even yet and is supported by other Google income. I keep non-intrusive adverts on my videos to support RUclips.

    • @zodak9999b

    My channel is monetized and I had a massive drop in suggested views starting abruptly on June 1st. First half of the year was looking like the best year ever... last half seems to be the worst ever.
    It seems to be the same time that RUclips rolled out channel memberships and merchandising to content creators. They might be squeezing channels to get them to offset their income with the memberships and merchandise.

    The "suggested videos" sucks for me right now. Both on the main (home) page, and in videos, such as this one. I'm getting suggestions like I've already seen the entire youtube, and it's only showing me old stuff that I already viewed. It makes no sense and the last few months I had to dig deeper and deeper manually just to get _some_ content.

    • @wantkixido
      @wantkixido 5 лет назад +2

      ...Yes, exactly! Absolutely the same for me. Its frustrating and time wasting, this absurd change. I typically never use the word "absurd". However, I fear using the word "STUPID" would make me sound immature and not taken seriously. This is a very serious issue, in so many ways. It doesn't take a Masters Degree or any formal education to realize this. Simply common sense... at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, I feel like there has got to be some ulterior motive behind this. At the very least, a bottom line of "money"...something is not right. I realize this new generation has been schooled differently, and have grown up in a very different "world" than the generation prior, but they cant be this dumb. Besides, us "old schoolers" are still working and must be in the higher echelons of corporate management, right?

  • @petercollin5670

    Fran, You're not alone. I have made friends with some guys who make woodworking videos professionally. In the last year they have seen their engagement go way down, views per video, and so on. There is lots of chatter about the reasons why. It seems like the amount of available content grows exponentially, so you are competing with way more other videos, new and old, and it's only going to get worse. So things get better from the viewing end, but worse for the content providers.

    • @electronicsluckydip
      @electronicsluckydip 5 лет назад +10

      however steady growth of competing content still wouldn't account for the sudden drop in new subscribers that Fran is questioning in the video, which seems clearly the result in some change on youtube's handling the channel.

    • @EEVblog
      @EEVblog 5 лет назад +16

      I agree with BR, it doesn't explain it. My channel has dropped drastically in Social Blade ranking (subs/views/etc) due to incrseased "competition" (which is a good thing), yet my actual growth in views and subs has not really dropped, it just keep going. Fran has been a huge order of magnitude drop, my guess is that she demonetised her videos.

      @ Norbert Landsteiner
      I think the RUclips suggestion algorithm works with "themes". A clusters of arbitrarily related videos and channels. If enough of your last views match such a "theme" you get more suggestions out of that and nothing else (or at least very little other stuff).

      I just asked for your explanation before i commented more; that's the Effen Truth! "They need to make money", does not explain how a FREE platform needs it's content producers to give them money (feel free to copy and paste here where it states that in user agreement). And comparing me to creating a platform such as this, is not at all the same as such large companies as PayPal or Goggle, being the former and current owners, creating and affording a platform such as YT. So, If bringing in monies for YT FROM its contributors is so important, than why not explain this to avid content contributors? Why the secret? Doesn't sound like a good buisness model to alienate your clients. As claimed, she explained, YT has not mentioned she should monitize and has yet to receive and explanation. So, IF this is truely what YT wishes for this OP and others to do, please provide a link to prove your theory, instead of just secondhand speculation. I do believe and understand that MOST buisnesses need to make money, same with YT; then why delete Alex Jones and other conservatives with large forllowing that are monetized??? Hate speech? Nah, media makes loads of monies off that. Don't believe everything you read or hear. Advertizing income alone does not get Google to over $100B year net income, and that's another Effen Truth! MY hunch, based on your YT name and the comments you make, is you just need to show how superior you beleive you are by making snide comments. Which only serves to make yourself feel better because you feel like such a failure in life. It's called Narcissism. No matter how smart you are, there will always be someone smarter than YOU! That's another Effen Truth! BTW, how are you contributing monies to YT with no content? Do you have to pay? Or is it free to you as well? Now go follow the money on how Google, ahem, RUclips really make their monies.

    RUclips is currently spamming my suggestions with some video of a 1000deg ball melting things. it's dumb and I don't wanna see it. but I do notice it has millions of views and is always there just nagging me to watch. sometimes up to 3 different videos of it melting different things. I've definitely seen some channels not showing up on my YT home page for months now.
    Some channels don't give notifications any more, even if I have "All Notifications" enabled, and the bell icon ticked.
    The bell icon has also been broken for well over a year, where it will spontaneously un-tick the "All Notifications" option.
    When I try to click it again, I get the "Unexpected Error" message. I have to unsub then re-sub before it will allow me to click it again.
    It can't just be me with the issue, and there's no doubt about it being a server-side problem (ie. GoogleTube).
    I did report it multiple times, and got a reply from them on Twitter, but it's still not fixed.
    But yes, it's not your imagination (as you have shown with the data), GoogleTube have been trying to kill off the smaller channels for a couple of years now. :(
    They're only interested in the mega-popular money makers, which is stupid because all channels have to start somewhere, and those channels could also turn into mega channels eventually.
    I don't get it as a business model. Surely Google bought RUclips with the full knowledge that smaller channels being allowed to make great content is the entire basis of the platform's popularity and growth?
    I'm not sure what they're up to atm, but they still seem to be doing well at upsetting a lot of great content makers. Many people I know have jumped ship to Twitch etc.
    The thing is, I do love RUclips still. I hardly ever watch TV any more. I just wish they would stop suffocating the smaller channels, and even some of the larger ones.
    Keep doing what you do, Fran. ;)

      Oh, and both of your videos showed up in my notifications today.
      I can say for sure the same didn't happen the other week - I only saw your vids in the Inbox. Really frustrating.
      Granted, I am subbed to over 1,200 channels (but only watch maybe 10-15 regularly). lol
      I can't have notifications enabled for more than say 30-40 channels, which isn't a huge number of vids per day.
      (the majority of those channels only post new vids once or twice a week.)

    Subbed instantly (even not knowing yet what You're actually doing/showing on Your channel).
    Found You on my RUclips start site which I recurrently renew 'cause I found it the best way fishing for exactly that thing: interesting videos/topics no longer popping up besides the videos I watch (for what reason ever). Thanks for the work put in this, even knowing there's only a small margin of people like me.
    You were the first one to explain my vague feeling of "how got youtube so bloody boring recently?"
    I first thought it would derive from people (people producing interesting content, that is) simply leaving their channels alone after the adpocalypse, but it turns out I somehow just do not find new exiting weirdos any more without actively (or even desperately and thus inventively) searching.
    Trying to do my "youtubing" without being logged in didn't help, it was more like reducing suggestions to "below 72 IQ points", and logged in it seemed like the walls of my bloody personal youtube bubble got more solid with every day of effortlessly browsing youtube suggestions.
    This nerdy marketing hipsters writing algorithms to steer people where ever they think we have to be steered towards thoroughly ruined my RUclips universe.
    I would readily change platform instantly would there be any halfway serious alternative.
    Thank You for making videos and sharing whatever You share. I'll explore the next days ...

    It may be unrelated but I noticed that when I was carrying links in the description to my Patreon page, the number of views I got from "suggested videos" fell significantly. That's why I don't carry a link to my Patreon page in my description any more. That may have been one factor but there are other factors as well because I know a *lot* of long-time channels have seen the same thing. Unsurprisingly, most of these channels are educational in nature and don't use click-baity thumbnails or chase popular subjects in seek of big views.
    It seems that RUclips is chasing the dollars and they know that there's no money in smaller channels (especially those which are unmoneitized) that don't create "clickbait" videos. :-(

    RUclips appears to be a platform that is channeling more and more people into fewer and fewer major channels. Back in the day, a subject matter expert that produced rich content could develop a successful channel. The production quality of the video did not have to be exceptional, but the information content needed to be good. As people engaged in the videos, the channel would grow, as youtube would reward the channel by exposing this to more people. I have built successful channels in the past, but now my experience is it is almost impossible to develop a new channel based on unique, high quality, subject matter expert content. It is like they have decided they want youtube to be an entertainment platform with 100 channels. I desperately wish a viable competitor for youtube would come out to serve as a free market for ideas, with success based on viewer response.

    Fran, sorry I didn't subscribe before, but I've done that now. Yes, you just showed up today as a suggested video. I would watch your content back in the first part of the year, but you just dropped out of sight. I'll go back and try to watch everything for 2018. Thanks for what you do!! You are amazing!

    You're not wrong. I have similar stats, the tap was just turned off. I've been subscribed for a while, but haven't seen your videos in my feed, this one being an exception. Feels like they keep moving the goal posts.

    My channel is getting the same treatment. I used to get a reasonable amount a views, (not a lot, but 1k-2k per video), recently, I'm down to 100-200 per video. YT is pouring salt into the pot and ruining the soup

    You are NOT alone this is something RUclips is doing on the side they are a bunch of liers!!! it's all about the $$$ it's in our faces. well they are going to look at it like this "She's not getting us any money so let's send the traffic to other channels that are monetized. Pull the switch on her."

  • @juweinert
    @juweinert 5 лет назад +8

    I'm not sure about the timescale. But in the last months I definitely noticed a drastic decrease in quality of my RUclips watch page. The suggestions are worse than ever! Less and less interesting stuff...
    Bear up, Fran! :)

    • @MammaApa

      Same here. Suggestions are terrible now, and it makes sense if they pulled all the non monetized channels from it. Sucks.

    The trouble is, RUclips isn't a platform for education; its a platform for Google to make money. Did they make changes to their algorithm? Possibly. They never warn people of these things. Are RUclips more likely to suggest videos that will bring in money for them? It would be the smart business decision. It almost certainly, as you alluded to, comes down to the fact that you don't monetize your videos. Google doesn't make money from them so, instead, they suggest videos that will bring in ad revenue.

    • @volvo09
      @volvo09 5 лет назад

      Sadly the reason I use RUclips is for education. I went from using RUclips in 2005ish as a means of watching racing and car videos, to watching more and more "real life" stuff where people post updates on projects or show how to fix things from vehicles to air conditioning. Having that type of content available has really educated me on lots of real life stuff. Unfortunately the same thing that happened to t.v. (like let's Fart in a can and throw it at my dad) is happening to RUclips and they are pushing that garbage.

      But it’s not good business to piss off your viewers and content generators. That might work in the short term, but it’s not sustainable, because viewers and content generators will switch to other platforms.

    1st I can tell you for fact YT has unsubed me twice from you this year. first time was around april and then again in july. notice I did not unsub but youtube unsubed me (they have unsubed me from other channels as well) and then I have to go back in and re-sub when I noticed. so I don't think the "churn" is people actually clicking un-sub it is YT just randomly unsubing people.
    Honestly, I firmly believe youtube does not want people like me, you and other individuals on here anymore, they just want famous celebs and main stream media to put it simple, we are just peasants and are unwelcome on the platform, only the famous celebs and MSM will be promoted.

    • @Wagoo

      The "bell" being activated/deactivated is also unreliablely shown on a lot of channels. And it'll also show recommended channels to you with an unclicked sub button.. when you're already subbed when you go to the channel.. so yeah, the status is unreliable. I think the actual subscribed or not/bell clicked or not function is working, but the display of that is not (eg. it can show you unsubbed to a channel you know you are subbed to.. but videos from that channel will still show in your subscriptions page)

    • @volvo09

    YT doesn't care about small channels like this. I've seen it on other similar channels. It's sad and pathetic but hey let's let what's his face show dead bodies of people who have committed suicide without any penalty.
