  • Muireann and Alan are joined by Aideen Finnegan to discuss the brutal attack on rugby player, Evan Somers over the weekend.
Somers is said to have suffered a broken eye socket and two fractures to his ankle after he left a club near Dame Street in the city centre early on Sunday morning.
Alan tells Aideen that he was at that bar on Saturday evening, he says "that could have been me."
He says that Ireland thinks it's come farther than we have in homophobia and homophobic language and abuse. For example, he says people refer to him as that "queer off the telly" and that he gets that sort of language thrown at him all the time
Muireann points out that Ireland does not have specific hate crime legislation. Aideen says there is a hate crime bill in the works, but not enforced.

Assault and battery is assault and battery what will hate crime legislation do is it more severe sentencing what is iti think people should be specific ,because these things are already illegal. charging somebody with a hate crime does nothing unless there is a stronger deterrent built in

People have been assaulted for being homeless , for being Pakistani , for being from Mayo , for being Rangers supporters , for being liberal , for being conservative , for being a traveller, for being a settled person, Everything has a point of resistance and even LGBT++ must understand that, I would not walk many city areas at night on my own , it should not be that way but IT IS . Telling people that they should be able to do XYZ at a certain time in a certain place is all well and good, but personal safety must come first until such time as the Gardai can tell us it's safe.
Well, that's a long way off whether your are Gay or from Mayo. 😢

People don’t get get assaulted for any of the stuff you just mentioned. I can’t see how someone liking mayonnaise would get them assaulted. Also, you speak of ethnic minorities such as Pakistanis and travellers, but what about Black people? They are the racial group who have suffered the most racism. LGBTQIA+ people get attacked for the way they display themselves whether they be the way they talk, walk and so on…

@@stanbily9416 Oh, stop with your nonsense. What Jim has said is spot on.
"Also, you speak of ethnic minorities such as Pakistanis and travelers, but what about Black people?" What about black people? You completely contradicted your own argument by stating that he was talking about Ethnic minorities since black people fall under the category of ethnic minorities.
And that LGBTQIA is complete nonsense and contradicting on its own.

No, they don't because rationality, accountability, reasoning has no place in their ideology. Don't vote for anyone that supports irrational, unaccountable, unreasonable thinking unto office. There is nothing special about being a homosexual.

    • @jimbanda

@@stanbily9416 How do you know people don't get assaulted or have not been assaulted for the reasons I listed?? What special insight do you have?? , Mayonnaise?? LoL.. where are you from? You do know there is a part of Ireland called Mayo ??
I did not say racial or ethnic minorities , I simple mentioned two who may or may not be.
I did not mention "black people" , why would I single them out? White, Black , Coloured ? Everybody gets assaulted in certain areas at certain times of the night.
Being LGBTQ++ does not now and will never single you out as a person requiring special protection or attention , they are no better or worse than any other individual chosen to be assaulted by vicious thugs. Society has never been able to achieve the utopian existence that LGBT expect , there is a point of resistance , a point beyond which we can't be sure of certain norms, and that's where the Gardai operate in a manner that their resources allow them, I can't name any place in the world where I can walk an entire city expecting to be perfectly safe, neither can you , neither can the groups I mentioned, and neither can LGBTQ short of having an armed escort all the time.
That's the way it is and constantly whinging that one particular minority should have greater levels of protection is pointless and can actually raise the point of resistance rather than the lowering we all hope for in a civil society.
