Sadly, Roger's time on Doctor Who was all too brief, but for me, he was one of the greatest and most memorable characters from the Classic Series! His truly brilliant, and totally evil portrayal of the Master, will NEVER be equalled! "In Loving Memory" indeed! ❤️😭
Derek Jacobi will probably be your best bet. I know he was only there for a short while in Utopia, but there's a lot of great audio dramas in big finish with him.

When I first watched the master it was with Jacobi and Simm and I thought to myself "Yeah he's funny, he's entertaining, he's a genius and he's crazy and complicated." But Delgado's master really got me to respect him: he really sold me on the talent for hypnosis, disguise and resourcefulness. Modern day master's make the master out to be some joker-like figure who is evil for no reason other than because he thinks it's fun, not because he wants self-congratulation or because he's paranoid or vain. Delgado really is the best master because he's what all the other masters are based on, the only difference is their motivations. He's also the most elegant and mellowed and least arrogant of the masters. I suppose he's so stable because he's the master who has had the drums beating in his head for the least amount of time.
It's a shame Roger never lived long enough for there to be a multi-Master Episode in his era. I can just hear his velvet tones, "Oh no, you may be A Master, but I am THE Master, The original you might say..."
Will always be the best Master, the original, Roger Delgado was amazing, so well spoken and fair mannered, but underneath an evil and cunning villain. Been watching the Jon Pertwee stories again and I've loved every episode featuring Roger as 'The Master', but as I've gotten to the end of 'Frontier In Space' I felt sad as only 3 months after it aired he'd died in a tragic accident, who knows what would've happened in the Doctor Who timeline had that fatal not have come to pass.
Delgado was THE Master. The epitome of menace and villainy coupled with suave and panache not replicated in later versions (although I ceased watching in 2017). Mind you I have to say that Peter Pratts emaciated incarnation was the most chilling and creepy. I thought Anthony Ainley did tend to send the part up a bit. Almost, but not quite, a pantomime villain. Delgado nailed it. I cried when I heard that he'd lost his life in a car accident in Turkey.
Bless Roger he was really prefect as the master. No one was even close to Roger playing the master . My favourite character is Roger playing the master.
I never really knew you as a child Roger. I wish I did, along with your pal Jon Pertwee. My boyfriend and I, are both 52. Not far off your age when you died Roger. So sorry you died so young but your acting legacy lives on as per Shakespeare Roger Delgado, love you❤️❤️❤️❤️ March 1st 1918 - June 18th 1973 aged 55 years)
I think it was a shame in billions of ways, Roger Delgado did not live to make his planned final appearance in the final story of season 11 which would have featured a big final showdown between the 3rd Doctor and the Master and the Master was to be killed off in a huge cosmic explosion and the Dr would be injured causing his 3rd regeneration.
I grew up with Anthony Ainley, so I feel a certain amount of loyalty to him. But when I saw a few stories with Delgado, I was very quickly converted. He elevated every story he appeared in.
Before Doctor Who, my favorite TV duo was Fox Mulder and Dana Scully from X-Files, my favorite villain was Scorpius from Farscape, and my favorite character was Elim Garak from Deep Space 9. Now my favorite villain, as well as my favorite character, is the Master version of Delgado, and my favorite duo is now the 4th Doctor and Leela.
Roger Delgado made the part of the Master, very much his own and created a Master that really cannot ever be recreated despite the fact other actors have played the Master since Roger died over 50 years ago they IMO have never been as definitive as Roger Delgado. I also say the same thing in Blake,s Seven one sci-fi series Roger sadly was not around to appear in I am sure had Roger lived he no doubt would have been in B7 as a villain. In B7 Paul Darrow Avon made the part he played his own and Paul created an Avon which cannot be recreated the same with arch-enemy Servalan Jackie Pearce she created a Servalan that cannot be ever recreated and it is the case some actors make some parts their own and it is not easy to envisison other actors playing those parts.
Roger Delgado was the only actor ever to play the master in the 70s sad he died in 1973 RIP Roger there was only one person to ever replace him was Anthony Ainley the 2 best masters
Before watching Classic Who, I was like, the Simm!Master is great! Yeah, then I watched Three's episodes, and in my opinion Simm is nothing compared to Delgado. God, he was brilliant. I mean, the role was literally written with him in mind.
I must say in millions of ways Roger Delgado was awesome as the Master and had Roger Delgado lived longer I have a theory he may have got to appear in another classic sci-fi series Blake's Seven as a villain sadly Rogerdied 5years before Blake's Seven came out on Television
Spoiler alert! Never gonna happen. Especially with Chibs the idiot at the helm. Though I do agree I much prefer this kind of Master as opposed to Simm and Dhawan. To be fair when Missy wasn't being hyper (Which I strangely couldn't help but love on her even if I hated it on Simm and Dhawan) and was super quiet (Check out Doctor Falls, and Lie of the Land) she could be scary and badass as heck. Reminding me very much of Delgado. Not to mention she had the same brilliant chemistry with Capaldi that Delgado and Pertwee had. I believed they were friends. I know some people don't like Missy and her arch but I thought it was a brilliant way for the Master to go out. (In my mind for good as I gave up at the end of season 12)
