- Dean Wilhelm, co-founder and director of nonprofit organization Hoʻokuaʻāina demonstrates the traditional Hawaiian practice of Kuʻi ʻAi learned from Kupuna Earl Kawaʻa.
STAGES OF KUʻI ʻAI
Nahā - to smash or break: Smashing the corm to break into large pieces
Mokumoku - islands: The kalo has been pounded into many smaller pieces or islands.
Paʻipaʻi - to slap: Gathering the “islands” all together with the hands, and pounding them until they stick to each other.
Pili - stick together or adhere: The small pieces are starting to stick to each other, and the many pieces are unifying to a single slab.
Paʻi ʻai - undiluted pounded kalo: Paʻi ʻai is a thick, solid slab, with little to no lumps, ready to be transported and then later watered down to one’s preference.
Wali - smooth: To blend the paʻi ʻai or poi until it is smooth and ʻono to eat!
Really enjoyed the breakdown + identification of the stages of poi pounding. Mahalo!
Awesome mahalo for sharing! I took board and stone with Uncle Earl and now get to feed poi to my family and baby every week with fresh kalo from Hoʻokuaʻāina.
Mahalo for sharing Jordan. This is exactly what we love to hear!!! 🙌🏽 #mahaloplantkalo
