In Diana Beresford Kroeger's autobiography, 'To Speak for the Trees' she recounts an old druidic prediction that says Ireland's decimated oak forests would be replanted by people in the future, beginning in County Clare! From there, it will spread around the globe, "like wildfire". Nice work, dudes!
The planting of a tree is a modest form of immortality as Voltaire said, fantastic work such as a positive contribution your family is making to County Clare!

Excellent! Proud of you all! Some of the names of the trees, I have never heard of...but we have lots of maple, oak, long needle pine, 1 aspen, 1 birch, and even a spiral willow tree in our front yard, We have some cedar trees too, which I'm allergic to, but they grow way out by the pond, thankfully. Our acreage used to be farmland, so the nutrients in the soil are depleted, I'm going to look into something to fertilize them with. We do get plenty of rain, but not like you do! Our soil is usually very hard to dig unless we've had a torrential rain. (SE Kansas, USA). Again, great job! Hug your trees!
I really like cedar. I wonder if some green manures to start would work on improving your land? I’m so proud of everyone involved it’s going to be amazing in the years to come

Another great video , a massive step in the right direction. I wish more people with land took a page out of your book and plant trees . My home is surrounded by trees and I feel so much peice and a cense of calm walking amongst them , the only time they will come down is when they can't stand up by themselves.
Hello love your video you are a credit to nation recently I have helped my friend's girlfriend plans 100 trees in her garden I know it's not a lot of trees the white willow and Scots Pine 50 of each 25 oak trees she has a house in Donegal did it in February can't wait to go down again to see if the trees survive oh my name is Brendan Connolly I'm from Dundalk in Ireland
Love the tree planting ! Be careful not to plant them too close to each other. So much of this planet has been sadly deforested. My dna is originally from Ireland & Italy but now I’m in the states where deforestation is still rampant . Thank you so much for what your doing !!! The birds and the animals that will come will also help reforestation when the birds eat the seeds and poo them out onto the ground. 👍
It was a great day when we were all planting together. They are starting to green up nicely now. Reforestnation had told us to do 1m spacings and thin later and also to allow for ones that don’t survive. So far though they seem to all be doing well :)
Fantastic work guys! That's some achievement! I follow reforest the nation on Instagram and I wish I had loads of land to plant trees on! As Colette O Neil from Bealtaine Cottage says ' plant trees like your life depends on it...because it does! Paula x
Congrats Bruce, to your family and all the volunteers. Great job. I may have missed what tree varieties you planted (besides Scot’s pine and silver birch). Would love to know.
Well we have 2 options really. I can carefully go in with the strimmer and mulch occasionally round them or apparently I can do nothing and allow the bramble to come back and act as natural protection from animals that like to eat saplings and as the years go by eventually the trees will win the battle of the light and the bramble will retreat. I think I’ll probably do a bit of both as I like the idea of being able to walk amongst them :)
Hey Bruce. I hope you are well. Will you be doing a video in the near future on how the trees are doing and which Irish natives are growing the best for you? Cheers
I think I’ll do a land tour again in the summer with what I I’ve planned etc. I had to move most of them from where I originally planted them to the lower fields but they are doing well. The oak, silver birch, alder and willow are doing particularly well. Very pleased to know the land will have oak trees growing on it :)
Had to revisit this great vid Bruce as I'm just about to plant a few hundred myself here. Any things learned in a year, any tips for novices? did the oak last in the bag? Great editing quality in this vid also Bruce ;)
Thanks 🙏 I went for the slit method and had good success but definitely take your time and make sure you know where you want them as I have moved over half of them early winter. I rushed into planting them and made a few mistakes. Nice job to do with friends :)
I’ll defo do another land tour at some point. I actually moved a lot of the trees to my lower fields at the start of winter but they are doing well. The oaks and alder especially
Last autumn I was out for a walk with my friend Pauline in ice House Hill Park in Dundalk we are walking around the boundary and there was an old oak tree and there was a lot of acorns picking them up and put them in my pocket I'm back the next day 250 acorns I have planted thyme in pots doing my shed there is a plastic roof on my shed so they're starting to come up hopefully I might get 100 oak trees one need to find somewhere to plant them hopefully I will be able to all the best Brendan Connolly
They were between 1-2m and we would thin them once established. We actually moved most of them this winter to a more unusable field this winter just gone as we planted them in the wrong place really
You know you inspired me to give money to reforest nation $20 a month to reforest ireland Also, I’d love for you to show pictures of how the trees are growing that you planted. It’s a year or now since you posted this more ❤ to you and your family
Good man John. We have actually spent a lot of time moving a lot of the trees to a better spot. I’d say over half of them have done well and I can see them starting to bud again this year. I’d love to see what it’s like in 50 years from now

The instructions we were given was to plant at 1m spacings in clumps of 25ish and leave gaps around the clumps creating space for natural glades etc. It also allows for failures. In about 10-15 years I will have to thin out and coppice some giving space for the stronger trees. :)
Hello, I plan to a small Woodland from my friends, girlfriend in Donegal my name is Brendan connolly i from dundalk I Plant it 50 white widow and 50 scotch, pine February of this year we went down a week ago to Donegal and most of them survived 25 old trees most of the time survived one or two doesn’t I have 200 young oak trees coming up in my shed? It’s like a greenhouse I am looking for somewhere to plant them. I want to plant them myself. Can you help hope there’s no mistakes in the message I can’t read
Hey Brendan. I have a few hundred oaks myself left to plant so I don’t need any more but if you contact Home tree in Clare I’d say they could point you in the right direction. They are doing great things
Can someone tell me why I should plant native trees? I cannot find answer anywhere. Why not plant foreign trees that are suited to climate and can grow 3 times faster to sequester more carbon?
We planted native just because irelands native tree cover is so low and they best suit the biodiversity of this country. We will plant non native trees to but apparently you need to be careful as some are invasive. Also the planting of non native have caused all sorts of issues such as the ash die back etc. I’m not really an expert on this kind of thing. I just listened to local knowledge
I remeber when I was in the US navy in the 1980's and based in Wales went to ireland once but it all looked the same and depressing hardly any trees just fields of grass seemed so un natural then later on I found out that the UK and Ireland used to have massive broadleaf forests just like the east coast of the USA had
Yes there used to be huge deciduous tree coverage in both countries but there was mass deforestation. Very few ancient woodlands left now but hopefully we can bring them back. There are some great people doing amazing work at the moment which gives me hope :)
An Englishman 'planting' trees in Ireland!...........its a brave new world. xD fair f***s lad im only ribbing you a bit, by the way narrower spades may serve you a bit better in Connaught.
Your trees are too close to each other. It is a common mistake, because you have to take in account the size of the tree when mature. So, think about that and you will understand what I am saying
Hi David thanks for the tips. We planted these as instructed by Reforest nation with the view that some won’t survive and weaker ones will be removed hence the close planting
@@OffGridBruce Well that makes sense but what happens if None die or or we’re sure they won’t die in the places that works out according to that plan but good luck
@@OffGridBruce maybe 5 years ago you could say that but they multiple and spread so rapidly, any area of land that isn't being grazed by livestock will have deer
Have just realised the most joyful thing you can see is a child planting a tree. Thank you

I’ll defo do another land tour at some point. I actually moved a lot of the trees to my lower fields at the start of winter but they are doing well. The oaks and alder especially
great job, do you think you will get the forestry grant payments also for this?
No this was a collaboration between us and reforest nation
Last autumn I was out for a walk with my friend Pauline in ice House Hill Park in Dundalk we are walking around the boundary and there was an old oak tree and there was a lot of acorns picking them up and put them in my pocket I'm back the next day 250 acorns I have planted thyme in pots doing my shed there is a plastic roof on my shed so they're starting to come up hopefully I might get 100 oak trees one need to find somewhere to plant them hopefully I will be able to all the best Brendan Connolly
That’s awesome! I reckon you could rogue plant them in parks etc
Hello there, thanks for your inspirational work. How far apart did you plant the oak saplings? Will you thin them out in a few years? Thank you
They were between 1-2m and we would thin them once established. We actually moved most of them this winter to a more unusable field this winter just gone as we planted them in the wrong place really
Thanks for letting me know. I see that field seemed to be full of bracken fern. What is your remedy to eliminate them?
At the moment we have the pigs in there and I have been mowing with my flail attachment and the grass is starting to win the battle
I wonder why these trees look like now like how did they do in the spring
They have done well. I actually moved most of them to the lower fields this winter
You know you inspired me to give money to reforest nation $20 a month to reforest ireland
Also, I’d love for you to show pictures of how the trees are growing that you planted. It’s a year or now since you posted this more ❤ to you and your family
Good man John. We have actually spent a lot of time moving a lot of the trees to a better spot. I’d say over half of them have done well and I can see them starting to bud again this year. I’d love to see what it’s like in 50 years from now
Nevertheless you all did a great job, well done all 👏
Thanks Danny
Hey how’s it going ? I see you like beautiful tree planting videos so I’m going to leave you a link to one of our live oak tree plantings we just completed ruclips.net/video/Vd79CxCq7Ds/видео.html ..This is the first step to a full property transformation: including pavers, rock driveway, sod, irrigation & much more…If you like our channel make sure to subscribe…Thanks for watching 🐢
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but does planting them close together not mean they'll compete and not do as well?
The instructions we were given was to plant at 1m spacings in clumps of 25ish and leave gaps around the clumps creating space for natural glades etc. It also allows for failures. In about 10-15 years I will have to thin out and coppice some giving space for the stronger trees. :)
great job guys, fly tippers omg dirty bastards, wouldn't ya love to catch them i know i would and give um a good hiding lol
Definitely. An annoying job to sort out. Another job on the list 😂
👍❤️👍❤️👍❤️👍
Are you able to qualify for the Native Woodland Establishment Grant? I'm hoping to be able to do the same. Your whole set up looks amazing .
I don’t think so because we sourced our trees from reforest nation but I should look into it. Good luck with yours
@@OffGridBruce Ok Thank you
Does anyone know the nome of the song at minute 10:40?
I’ll have to look
😂 how times have changed. I did plan on making a dibble bar but I ran out of time.
Better to plan on the right way and fill in the ones that die later just advice
Native Irish trees My God this borders on Racism you must stop this you want trees Sow some exotic Foreign trees
Can’t tell if you are joking?
I hope the deer stay away
Luckily there are no deer around these parts.
@@OffGridBruce maybe 5 years ago you could say that but they multiple and spread so rapidly, any area of land that isn't being grazed by livestock will have deer
