      Once while fitting a kitchen a nice lady gave me a bottle of white sparkling wine, I usually drink beer but thought what the heck and drank the bottle from a coffee mug and watched some tv after work. My girlfriend was not happy the next day, When she saw the empty bottle it turned out to be an £80 bottle of champagne.. oops.

    Hi Tom.
    Absolutely lovin your channel..Excellent content and bloody addictive..
    I have been a Spark since '83, 4 yr apprenticeship..worked on; domestic, commercial & some major industrial jobs over my the years..
    Always done little domestic jobs, but then took the plunge about 16/17 years ago..been good..been lucky to meet some great folk along the way, it's been tough though..but rewarding..
    It's refreshing to see how you work, it is very much mirrors how i/we approach/complete work, but I am an old school dinosaur now and nearing the end of my career might squeeze another few yrs but have already started to wind down a bit..love the vans, love the bike, funny as I can really appreciate a tidy/quality van & have been riding bikes all my life..we have had our VFR 800 for 20 yrs this month..
    Keep up the fantastic work, you are a bloody credit to The Trade Bro..can i suggest; Y'all please wear some PPE..you only get one pair of eyes/ears & lungs..apart from that crack on..
    But what do I know ? Lol..
    Hope you Yall staying safe (and alert) throughout 'lockdown'..
    Best Wishes to you and the team.

    Hi Tom, a very good simple instruction or explanation of a question I was wondering about. Thanks. We do not use ring circuits over here in New Zealand. Everything is wired as straight lines, phase, neutral and earth going to all switches or sockets, but light switches and power sockets may not be on the same circuit, and each circuit must have its own breaker. Switches or sockets may be daisy-chained. 2+E in all cases, each wire insulated and then with outer insulation also. Switches on 2.5 sq mm cable, and lighting sockets on 1 sq mm cable (minima). 2 or more light switches for the one light are special cases for cables. Domestic stoves (ranges) on 6 sq mm cable.

      Alan Torrance If I’m correct, the UK is one of the only countries who use ring circuits. It’s actually really stupid because they’re not actually needed.

    not a criticism at all of the work of Thomas ... I had my new house tested and the results were perfect and I watched the guy do it one week later I got a shock from the dryer in my utility room I investigated as I am an industrial technician with 17th edition only to find that the earthing of that part of the house was a mess .. just saying this form of testing is no guarantee of safety as it cannot confirm the quality of every electrical connection into the future if they are not individually inspected

  • @cliveross1800
    @cliveross1800 6 лет назад +1

    Any work carried out on any circuit , the circuit should be checked To make sure safe isolation,after it is disconnected, Testing a ring you should also test insulation, in case it has has a crossed ring, when plugging in each socket to test figure of 8, make sure it is dead, and on the circuit you are testing. I would also check the RCD is working before leaving .

      I miss them to be honest. they were good boards. I firmly believe that it's not weather its a plastic or metal board, its how well you fit it. I feel a little bit like we are going backwards with metal fuseboards now. fitting a plastic board badly is one thing, but fitting a metal board badly is even worse.

    • @gibberingidiot
      @gibberingidiot 6 лет назад

      Definitely agreed with that! Have you seen a metal easy9+ one in the wild yet? If not, which do you prefer of the AMD 3 boards? I've found problems with the BG ones (hassle with cutouts) and MK ones (loose terminal bars and poor cover screws) that I've had to install in the last few months, so may have to try some others out. Sometimes it's worth paying a little more for the board if it makes installing easier/safer.

    • @lewisbrand
      @lewisbrand 6 лет назад

      And fitting a metal board on a TT system is potentially lethal.

Keep up the good work Thomas as i am very sure these videos will help some other poor man starting off .

Gaining C&G 2360 part 1&2 and AM1 and 16th edition and recently 17th edition. As a self employed electrician doing domestic (non notifiable work) im looking at becoming a member of niceic or napit eventually when work picks up more. What course(s) would I need to do in order to fulfill the requirements? 9:30 The Phantom of the Opera. Ring Mains make a lot of sense. However, here in South America (Chile), we don't have fuses in our plugs which would make them quite dangerous. Our main breaker at the electricity meter is a 25 amp breaker, which feeds an RCD and then a 10 or 16 amp radial for the sockets, a 10 amp radial for the lighting circuit and a 10 or 16 amp radial for the kitchen. It is very unusual to have electric heating or domestic hot water (about 95% of homes use gas-fired instant hot water heaters or combi boilers.) No electric cookers, ovens, showers or other heavy draw appliances.

    Hi Tom, great videos mate! It's nice to watch another electrician and see them take the same approach. Have you ever thought of doing your ring tests at a socket instead? saves fumbling around in a busy consumer unit especially when it comes to your figure of 8 tests. Keep up the good work!

    • @thomasnagy
      @thomasnagy  7 лет назад

      hi mate,
      ill be honest, i have always done it at the board just because that's how i was taught; but doing it at a socket actually makes more sense i guess as you ain't juggling 66 wires in a fuseboard! cheers for the tip ;-)

    Repeated disconnection and re connection of wires in the terminals is more likely to cause a fault than prevent one. It's time they made a c/u more like the fire control panels which can be tested without messing with the connections. What a faff.

    Great video. I've recently qualified but the only test I'm nervous about is insulation resistance testing due to the potential damage it can cause. Any chance you can post one to demonstrate how you do it. The class room is nothing like real world where sensitive equipment is concerned.

      You're not the only one mate, if you've gone round the installation and isolated or disconnected any voltage sentive equipment and are still unsure if you got everything, do an insulation resistance test between line and neutral at 250V, that will highlight if something is still connected without damaging the equipment.

    Hey Thomas, I'm a Physicist. Not sure if when you're doing your training they told you to calculate the theoretical value and then measure, but you shouldn't do that. You should always measure values first and then calculate their expected value. You are actually introducing the potential for bias in your observations by measuring then calculating. No idea what it says in the regs or anything like that as I'm not a spark! Just an interesting observation. I'm new to your channel and I'm loving the content!

    • @azzajohnson2123
      @azzajohnson2123 6 лет назад +2

      You do make a great observation, same with computer science. Guessing with this sort of testing if anything is untoward then it’s quite obvious by the result if it’s way out of tolerance. Is this a forced regular testing in the UK? Here in Aus the emphasis is always on appliance testing and no real testing unless major work has just been done. (Which would not catch out DIY fuckery).

    • @swampyindustries6718

      He's done it this way so he knows what the reaading should be 0.02 ohms either way would give no concerns. If you had a ring on a ring or multiple spurs it would go up and would show up.

    Never had to null my leads when doing a loop test (Zs/Ze). I've got a Megger MFT 1720 which has the test lead resistance stored in the unit and automatically deduct test lead resistance from your measured reading, I guess it must be different for the 1500 series range.

    • @thomasnagy

      your meter must be a bit more advanced than my 1552. I have to null em every time otherwise you get wonky readings! By the sound of it though my Megger wont be cheap to repair so i will be upgrading shortly.

    What test leads do you use with your Megger 1552 ? I still use original leads but have some other crocodile clips as the originals are crap .

    • @thomasnagy
      @thomasnagy  7 лет назад

      i find i usually end up replacing them every 12 months or so becuase you end up getting dodgey readings from them. you can buy replacement sets of leads on Ebay or Amazon for about £30. thats what i normally do. ;-)

    You were talking about ring circuit in the wireing could you make a diagrame on wiring board

  • @alantorrance6153

    13.36. Simple maths. for 1/4 of 1.34 1/4 of 1 is 0.25 1/4 of 0.32 (close enough to 0.34) is .08 ( hark back to multiplication tables, or are they not taught nowadays?) so 0.25 plus 0.08 = 0.33 Easy simple mental maths. I had the answer virtually as soon as you put the problem on the board.

    What are you actually testing on the ring end to end - resistance?

    • @jamesswift217
      @jamesswift217 6 лет назад

      asdreww might be a bit late for a reply but he's checking the continuity of the circuit to ensure that the ring is a full circuit as it should be - a high resistance reading could indicate that there's a bad connection along the line so the lower the resistance the better, to an extent

    • @thomasnagy
      @thomasnagy  6 лет назад +3

      Wago are very good. we use them alot over here. not cheap but they are very fast to use.
      They also do the ones with the little lift up levers so you can use them with flex.
      about £12 to 15 for a box of 50 connectors which is around 1164 rubles.

      Love them! The technology has been around for some 30 years now I think so they can be considered tried and true. If you're in a country with pretty much all-solid building wire you can stick to the 273/2273 series most of the time unless you're doing control wiring or stuff like that. The 221 series are super-neat too, the levers are much easier to pull up than the 222 and they're much smaller and easier to fit into boxes.
      It's not utterly impossible to use them incorrectly though - I've seen junction boxes where the 2273s just fell off the wires as soon as I touched them!
      I don't really miss working with choc blocks except maybe for nostalgia's sake - it's much easier if each wire is held in place separately than if you're trying to hold a bundle of wires in one hand, a choc block in the other and then need a third hand for the screwdriver!

    There are serious faults that the standard tests won't reveal. Example: I workd on an installation that looked really good on the surface. All dead neat. But we found a pile of T&E cables joined by connector blocks buried under plaster, no switches or sockets in line either horizontally or vertically - ie, a bodge. If you want to know if it's ok, get out your crowbar and a hammer and chisel!

    What’s the reason for the higher resistance on the earth conductors in the ring? Thinner conductors than L and N?

    • @londontrada
      @londontrada 6 лет назад +2

      Yes, L&N are 2.5mm the CPC is 1.5mm

      The 1.67 comes from the calculation 2.5÷15= 1.67 that's how he worked out resistance outcome of the cpc.
