When it comes down to a genuine survival situation that thankfully many of us will never encounter, there's a "Rule of thumb" that says " A large knife will do the task of a small knife, but a small knife won't do the task of a large knife".
I find myself CONSTANTLY having issues with this. I try to be a good boy and modernize to a tiny blade, but they just don't get the job done with any amount of reasonable expenditure or time.
Ever try to clean a fish or other small game with a big knife? Thats why I always carry more then one knife. Yes a big one, a Khukuri with a 12 inch blade and the BPS Savage, oh and my Swiss Army Deluxe Tinker and Gerber Multi tool.
@@longrider42 Yes I have, and I agree in those situations a smaller knife is better, but if I only had one knife to do everything and I was in a very hostile environment then I would opt for a parang / golok
Many years ago a close friend in the mountains of SE Kentucky found an old Bowie knife in his tool shed & gave it to me. The stag handle was loose & the blade had lots of surface rust. I cleaned it up; tightened the handle; sharpened it; & eventually got a new leather sheath for it. After clean-up, it was a real beauty; the blade is high carbon steel made in Sollingen, Germany. When my friend gave the knife to me, it looked like it was not worth much; but now a knife of that quality would bring hundreds of dollars at most any knife swap or knife show. Thanks for your video. If I can get around to it, I might send a picture of it. By the way, I am 83 & still look forward to every opportunity available to be in the woods. God bless you. The Old pPeacher
I appreciate your thoughts and opinion on carrying a bowie. Thanks for posting I feel a bit more comfortable now takin mine out and puttin her to work.👍🏼👍🏼
More than happy to help. When I get fully back up on my feet, i intend to do some more big blade videos, and do some camping type stuff where you can see them really in action.
I used to teach Wilderness survival back in the 80's. Long before any one thought of using a knife to split wood. So I always taught carry a good small knife and a hatchet or tomahawk. Now I've added a small folding saw to my pack.
Apparently "MORK" stands for "Marion O. Richardson Knives", a knifemaker based in Texas. Can't find anything else on him. Looks like a worker. . . I definitely like the blade profile. Too many Bowies have a very short and very curved clip. . .good for chopping but not great for a thrust.
I also tend to use Bowies. They are full-tang made and enough to chop, slice and split objects. Mostly, bush-craft knives tend to be small and sensitive so they takes times and efforts to complete our tasks. This is why I choose Bowie knives for Bush-craft activities.
It doesn't matter which or what kind you use . I always carry a Bowie and a tomahawk , a hawk is lighter and 3 times more useful than a camp hatchet. And a Bowie is the exact same way . I always have a pocket knife on me 24-7-365 , for most needs. I can build a temporary shelter in 20 mins with the Bowie and hawk . Can't do that with a bushcraft knife. People get to wrapped up with what other people think. I always carry a hawk and Bowie , and other things with me camping that others find odd. Like a small bag of powdered lime. My local hardware sells it in 5 lb bags. I spread it out around the perimeter of my camp ,no more snakes ,spiders ,bugs ,mice , etc. And it's good for the soil too. Others think I'm crazy till later on , then they think I'm not so dumb after all. Pay no mind to other people , they are a blink and a shadow in your life . Not to be remembered anyway. Carry what you think is important ,and what you think you need. Peace.
@@thebigfellar7178 I understood. Using tomahawks is also good idea. In Japan, we can‘t cut down any trees without offocial permissions so we have to pick up fallen branches. To cut them short, Hatchet is too large and my bowie knife do well on that task. However, tomahawks should be better for these tasks as you mention so I will use them with small knives, too. Thank you so much for your suggestion.
I’ve used my Puma Bowie in the woods and hunting for forty years. I tell people that the first thing people do at camp is to make fun of my “big” knife”. The second thing is to ask to borrow it.
I love Bowie knives. All the little knife people that can't understand Bowies or why people like them etc, well guarantee you if they had to defend themselves against animals or people they'd want a Bowie rather than a 4" Bushcraft knife or whatnot. 🙏👍I love all my Cold Steel knives and the Bowies are no exception. I highly recommend the Drop Forged Survivalist, the Marauder, the OSS, 1917 Frontier Bowie. Love the Big Blades. I know you have some of those but for all who don't. Definitely fun knives.
I have a friend that I bought a DF Survivalist for. I think the newer models with the filled in grip feel nicer, but I have not run one, personally. I might talk to him about doing a review...
"for when I'm fighting" 😂😂😂😂 Look I like bowies and use em for hunting and camping, but don't pretend you're having knife fights with bears and cowboys.
In my experience, a lot of people get either caught up on the price (it costs too much to risk it) or unfamiliarity with it (I KNOW this old knife won't be hurt)...not sure what camp you are in, but I would encourage you to go out and beat the hell out of it. You should pay for tools that stand up to your needs, and the tools you pay for should stand up to those tasks. Have fun!
Bowie are adequate but when it comes to large blades you can't beat billhooks and khukuri and parang for bushcraft since that's what they were/are used and designed for. Now historically in the USA (and Mexico) Bowie were fighting knives, people used their jackknife for fine carving, dedicated wide flat and thin knives (we still have several patterns of those from Green River sold today) for butchery and skinning, and various axes for wood processing. That's fact. One tool options are frankly overrated and not really a historical thing, even people using Parang, Koita, Koduval, Khukuri etc historically also carried a smaller knife to complement a large chopper.
There are a lot of shades of truth there, and in large part I agree. Green River makes a fine knife (have 4 I regularly use), but they are not a stand alone knife for a lot of chores, especially the kind I tend to do.
I like a 9-10" bowie for my camp knife. It's funny how no indigenous people anywhere carry 4-6" blades.... Almost like it ain't enough knife for everyday work.....
I have my own collection of ""Large"" knives. Something to know is = History ) #a In the Good Ole Days. Very few people had guns. And those that had them didn't carry them. Most everyone ""did carry Big Knives though. And they used them for everything . Even sheriff's and deputy's for towns , didn't own the guns they carried , the Town did. Because guns were extremely expensive , and so was ammunition. A black power rifle costs as much as a years wages. Hollywood has brainwashed people into believing every Tom ,Dick ,and Harry had a pistol and a rifle. Everyone had a gun and a horse. And nothing could be further from the truth. Horses were rarer than guns. Camels were more populous than horses . After the Civil War it was a hanging offense to own or posses a gun in most of the South. Check my words and you'll see I speak the truth . Even today the way the world is going , you may want to invest in a Flintlock Fowler . I spent a $1000.00 on a handmade one . Bought a few tubs of black powder and some lead bars and learned how to make my own round balls .72 caliber and my own shot . So from birds to Bears . I'm set. In the Good Ole Days Fowlers were 3 times the price of regular rifles. Guess what they still are But you get a rifle and a shotgun . Peace.
Not sure about the price of a fowler compared to a rifle, as a blanket statement, but the rest of that is very spot on. The weapon ban after the War Between the States is the reason for "hunting archery" today. You sound like someone I could run trail with.

Your particular bowie looks to be thin, which is why its a good all rounder. Most bowies are way to thick.
