  • I make a lot of videos about Seattle and the Pacific Northwest on my channel. I like to show the beauty of this area as well as reality; I like to think of my channel as one that offers both relaxation and realty.
This is a narrated driving tour of Seattle showing you what areas to avoid. The drive covers International District including Little Saigon and Chinatown. downtown and Pioneer Square are also covered, as well as Jose Rizal Park.
    * Dr. Jose Rizal was Filipino, not Filipino American ad I inadvertently stated in the video.

I don’t like making videos like this because the comments will undoubted by negative. However I like to show reality so here it is. There is beauty as well as ugly around these parts, as it is true for many other areas of the country and world, for that matter. ✌️

Showing reality is important. Drug addiction/abuse and Homelessness are real major issues in America that we desperately need to face.
These issues don’t define Seattle and aren’t unique to Seattle but these issues do certainly exist here.
I love Seattle & Chinatown ID but truthfully shootings happen almost every single day in the International District alone. I believe it’s very important to be aware of the danger and always stick to the streets that feel safest. Typically it’s best to avoid homeless people for your own safety, however out of the few interactions I’ve had with homeless people in Chinatown they’ve all been very friendly.
If you’re aware of the danger & trust your instincts you’ll be perfectly safe here. ✌️❤️

Your narrating your perception of things which is your reality but not everyone is so easily afraid of everything like your are. To many other people this is still a perfectly fine place to live because they don't go on and make videos and campaign about how scared they are of their neighborhood now.

I’m fairly new to Seattle and I learned a lot by watching this video. Some of the areas are pretty close to where I live, but I never saw them. I thought your commentary was very objective and I appreciated it. Looking forward to watching more of your content.

I'm 68, grew up in Seattle, still live in the area. In my youth 1st Avenue from Pioneer Square to the Market was the worst for observing human hopelessness.
And the Central Area generally was pretty sketchy, but now most of it has been 'gentrified' to some degree.
All of these observations in the comments about how nice Seattle once appeared to people in their past vs the current reality seem to say more about the people making the observation than what Seattle actually is and has been.
It is still a beautiful setting for young people to enact the dramas of their lives.
When they look back 20 years hence they too will say "back in 2022, this was a very magical place, so many happy memories... but now, look at it...sad..."
Like all old people for all of history.

Exactly. My mom used to work downtown for 15 years in the 80s and 90s. She used to regale us with stories of interactions with creative “panhandlers”. I also encountered it every time I was downtown in the 90s, including some guy *ahem* touching himself openly at the bus stop in Capitol Hill. So I think nostalgia definitely clouds the memory!

I also like to check out the driving/traffic conditions [full disclosure: I'm a Registered Traffic Engineer]. I would definitely vote "thumbs-up" for you to provide more of these. Thanks.

I've been working from home the last 2 years. Pretty much everything I do has been online. I think I've only been downtown 3 or 4 times since then. I live (and grew up) in Renton. I lived on Capitol Hill late 70s early 80s, and worked downtown at 3rd and Cherry in the 80s. Thanks for the drive, I miss being in Seattle. I know some parts of town are having challenges, but I do my best to remain optimistic they'll bounce back. I hope so. I have a lot of good memories of Pioneer Square and the International District. Open air drug scenes like the one on 12th are basically a small scale copy of the Tenderloin district in SanFrancisco. No matter how much the local businesses and residents ask for help, it seems like they are ignored. I hope Harrell can do something about it. We'll see I guess.

Born and raised in Downtown Seattle and have lived in every area for almost half a century and still do. If you think the corner of 12th and Jackson is bad there are miles of areas in Skid Row LA that put this to shame. You do not risk getting shot walking there any time of the day or night nor in any other area. I even lived on Maynard & Jackson in that area for several years. I also lived on James maybe 2 blocks from the courthouse in the mid-90s. The urban blight and violent crime here is nothing compared to the majority of major cities in America. It's hilarious how sheltered and isolated most Seattle-ites are and that is also reflected in these comments.

Thank you for making the video. Some of it is appalling, of course, and very depressing for those of us who used to live in Seattle. I drove a bus many times down those streets during the thirty-two years when I worked for "a large local transit agency." The city, I'm afraid, is a victim of its own success. I'm glad you ended up at Joze Rizal Park and showed us the view. It's all there: the mountains, the Sound, the hills. The beauty endures, beyond the nylon tents and the abandoned buildings. I tell people, and it's true, that I saw more raptors--eagles, hawks, falcons, ospreys--during my time as a driver than I ever saw hiking in the wilderness. And that is because of all the hills, the trees, and the water.

Seattle is struggling with the cost of living. Wages are higher here but when 1300 square ft town homes sell for over $1M, affordable housing is almost non existent for the people at the lower end. You know what, before anyone decides to move, DO YOUR RESEARCH! I visited Seattle twice in the past 3 years and realized how much I loved the city, the greenery, the area! I'm an LA native that was tired of the heat. LA was getting substantially worse, and I decided this city was where I belonged, and started googling the safe and not so safe neighborhoods, factored everything in. Eventually ended up on this channel, and 8 months later I made it.
When I go by these neighborhoods or see your videos of these areas, I breathe a sigh of relief I decided against pioneer square and parts of downtown/Belltown. There's more to Seattle than these "bad areas", and trust me, LA has plenty of that!

Any major City has "areas to avoid". Following a two-year pandemic, many major cities have more of these kind of areas. This is not unique to Seattle. Plus, having grown up in Seattle, this is not new. There were areas to avoid then as well. Back in the 80's I used to wait to catch a bus at 3rd and Pike, and it was dicey. People who panic at the site of anything that is not to their liking should not live in a major city. It will never be like Issaquah, or Mercer Island. If you want that, stay there.

bro i agree with what your saying here in this video, theres a lot of places that are questionable and suspect. I used to live in west seattle 35 yrs of my live and it had its fair share of madness, before the gentrification project started back in 2016ish. Its getting harder to live in Seattle in general for moderate income. Now we live in Skyway.. defiantly not the best either that's a saying something. I have my CWP and always watch my surroundings. stay safe regardless. Its hard in every state not just seattle. =)

I always wonder why almost every China / Asian town in the US is like a crime scene? Is there any systematic issues here? Like deep rooted unconscious bias leading to lack of government financing / support, being ignored by law enforcement, considered as an easy target for certain groups of people? WDYT?

I don’t go anymore, but 12th and Jackson was my spot. Lam’s, Linda’s Salon, Hard Wok cafe, Sigon Deli for Bun Mi, Spicy oil fish spot, that hidden hot pot spot…. so many good shopping and eats. But I can’t go there without carrying 2 guns and extra mags

Except for a few years in college I have lived in and around Seattle or it suburbs since the 1970s. I have spent the majority of the time on the west side. It’s changed so much it’s crazy. The west side used to feel small and suburban and downtown international district was urban and cool and unique. Now the west side has become bougie and fancy and more like downtown/bell town used to be. Most of the changes have been in the last 5-8 years. It’s crazy. Especially admiral and Alki. If my mom and grandparents could come back to life they wouldn’t recognize it. I’m also a long term vegetarian and have always enjoyed going to little Saigon for the huge variety of vegetarian foods. Than Son Tofu is always such a treat. I also love all the the Asian culture and art. Such a rich history and beautiful neighborhood. Breaks my heart to drive through it everyday on my way to work. But honestly Seattle is no different than any other major city. This problem is everywhere and cannot be escaped. Honestly it’s not as bad here as it is in Albuquerque or LA or San Francisco where the rest of my family is. It’s not great to see it fall into drugs and disrepair but it’s still nowhere near as bad as anywhere else. Most (obviously not all) of the time the way you get into trouble is only if you are flashing money or fancy clothes/jewelry around or involved in drugs prostitution or gangs. It’s still relatively safe for regular folks.

What turns me off about the city is the tent cities are bam right there. Everywhere else I have been Charlotte, Atlanta you have the areas that are tents and such. But not right next to the city hall and infront of gucci stores. And I am sorry but not sorry walking the streets and everywhere you smell marijuana is just like nah man.

This is great to document. The city is growing so fast that it's great to have something like this where we can look back on "how it used to look like in 2022". I was born and raised in Seattle, in the central district. When I got older I worked security Ll around downtown for a few years. I like how youre simply documenting, but keeping the politics aside. The reality is Seattle is a beautiful city that also has it's issues. Those issues need to be adressed.

How can one day that Seattle is a beautiful city in 2022? It has turned into a DUMP! I was born and raised there but left in 1974. I eventually moved to Pierce County. I have seen Seattle steadily decline to the horrible place it has become today. There are homeless encampments everywhere, graffiti everywhere, crime ridden neighborhoods, the price of homes and property is atrocious, sky rocketing property taxes, horrible traffic and the list goes on. I, like most former Seattlites, stay away as much as I can from this disaster area.
