I love how the Veloster evolved from being the butt of car enthusiasts' jokes when it debuted in 2013 to Performance Car of the Year in 2019. Well done, Hyundai!
that's because it was an entry level car when it first came out (I bought one). Hyundai built it to compete with cars like the Fit, Yaris, Fiesta, but "car enthusiasts" was comparing it with the likes of the WRX and Civic Si
Both are better than expected. I loved the look and cool design of the first especially in matt grey and now it drives better than before and perhaps less polarising looks.
I had a 2013 Veloster Turbo, threw some Eibach springs and Pilot Sport tires on it, totally woke the car up. Then when the new Forte GT came out I bought one of those and gave that a try, way better car underneath with the independent rear suspension and Pilot Sport 4 tires from factory. Felt quicker too. They're good little cars for basically being a hyper daily lol
My son bought a Veloster N with the Performance Pack this summer. What a great car and even better for the money. Awesome steering feel for a FWD car, comes with all the performance stuff you want, max adjustability, a clutch that makes it doable as a daily in heavy traffic, and a great sound, to name a few qualities. Matt shows you need to drive it to appreciate it.
I have driven one and I agree it's a great car. It's more fun to drive than many other hot hatches including my CTR. However, it shouldn't have won the PCOTY against all those genuine high performance cars. It's not "multi-purpose car of the year" or "best value performance car of the year." It is not about raw numbers, the importance of the VN in the performance car market cannot be understated mostly due to timing. Ford pulling their hatches and an utter lack of soul from many large manufacturers was threatening the existance of cars like these. The fact they they took this risk, it actually turned out good, was well recieved and sold well means the entire market may second guess the thirst for fun, affordable performance oriented vehicles. Could potentially represent a turning point imo.
I took my Veloster N to the track within my first 2 month's of ownership and it really a fun car to track. My favorite characteristic of it on track is how it just pulls you out of corner's while putting the power down. I would recommend the car to any enthusiasts with a lower budget limit, if they want a track car that is a great commuter as well

I think they were shitting on the out of place product placement. Petrolicious is about 90s Jag supercars, 250 GTOs, project cars, and the occasional modern analog supercar, not a fun hot hatch.
Before I decided to change it up and buy something completely different, I was shopping for a hot hatch, but just couldn't decide. I’ve been talking to a local salesman at a Hyundai dealership in the small city just south of the Tennessee border, which I live right on. The dealer told me what I needed to know on paper, but seeing it actually carried out, I’m dumbfounded at how well the car performs. Living in the countryside, this car would be a blast, definitely. You’re review of its raw capabilities has further influenced me to go through with the purchase. As it will be my second car, and my first was a Jetta, I will be getting a trade in value, so it will be a nice deal. It’s MSRP is $30,000.x and it’s discounted price at the dealership is $29,085.x. After rebates and trade in value, I think this could be a great purchase. My Jetta is a 2016 Jetta 1.4L TSI, it’s valued, in its current condition, at $7,800.x. After dealer rebates, I’m looking at a possible $24,000.x. What a deal that’ll be.
honestly the biggest hangup for me is no sunroof, leather, or heated seats...all of which are available on the much cheaper Fiesta ST (yes, those are still available at dealers (for now)). Granted the rest of the interior is of better quality, but at least heat the seats; winter is cold. Throw in a heated steering wheel, heated leather, sunroof, and few other things and call it the 4 seasons package or something and charge extra money. Make the Performance Package standard and add this option; I would think it would be an option often ticked.
Me too, I would have one in my driveway if they did. The only thing I am not crazy about with the Veloster is the different designs on the driver and passenger side of the car. I would have been happier if they would have just made it a 4dr. Even though the 2 dr driver's side looks far better imo.
ampiciline I don’t want the DCT yes automatics have improved greatly since the past decade especially DCTs but the Veloster N is meant to have a manual transmission for what it is meant to be The Veloster N is better off with the manual transmission
@@cyberneticxylem9614 I bought a Veloster N and got into a collision before I made my first payment but it's fixed now and totally worth it. Got one with 10k miles for 22k. I'd say go for it!
I would love to see a upgraded interior option for this car. Imagine if they ditched the plastic interior and gave it a Genesis like interior. I would pay an extra 5k for that.
+nomnomguy680 that's exactly why they didn't pick either of those; it's r&t's version of trolling. that being said, the veloster n is a damn fine car and a great value; it just shouldn't have been the pcoty.
Look for paint bubbling (rust developing) on the hood, door and hatch seams. Loved my Focus and Fiesta ST but rust on a car less than two year old is unacceptable.
very proud of Hyundai for building something this capable and bringing it to the masses. in the age of fuel economy and safety the fun factor isn't lost yet. i'll admit i wouldn't consider this car for another 3 years at least. for 15k you can get a FiST or if you do have 30K you can get a 2013 ZL1 Camaro, both incredible track cars.
2:11 Brakes too late and takes the wrong line then says “little bit of understeer on the entry” 😂 come on Matt. Great car and well deserving of the award 👍🏽
This was my fifth lap around that track ever, and every single one of these videos I did cold (meaning don't even drive the car ten feet before speeding cameras). Not as easy as it looks when you can use the magic of editing.
Jordan Dennis Maybe Mini will make next gen deliver on some of those dreams in 2023. I doubt it though. Oh well, the Mini still rules for driving fun in dense city environments.
Brad Comis it will be interesting to see how the new GP drives (or at least what the journalists say, probably won’t get a chance to drive one) and how much they can transfer from it to the next gen. I want to be excited for the gen 4 but I’m more of a carful optimist.
Ya Be ready. That coupe will have the 3.3T from the G70/G80 or the new motor they debut 3.5T. I can't wait. HKG(Hyundai Kia Genesis) is going to stir up the import and performance soon within a couple years. Did I say I can't wait yet?? Lol
exactly; the way i put it: you're paying more, but you're also getting just as much in terms of value. bang for buck, you can't go wrong with either one.
This may very well happen, with Hyundai releasing aftermarket upgrades, and possibly even a higher-performing variant of the N. The speed in which the N line is maturing is absolutely insane, IMHO. www.motorauthority.com/news/1125820_veloster-n-performance-concept-headlines-hyundai-s-sema-offerings
Skye Higa If you can get an R for MSRP, talking $6k, % large, reality not a lot more on a monthly payment. What is amazing me is the way that the R is holding value.
There are 2 Veloster Ns on dealer lots within 50 miles of me. 2. A salesman told me they’re essentially order-only. Sucks for someone looking to snag one for cheap. Back when Ford was selling STs, there’d be loads of them on lots and you could (and I did) grab a brand new Focus ST for $21k with ease, with Fiestas even cheaper.
@Stereo Typist I have not heard of anybody with a Type R with transmissions issues. Admittedly I do not hang on on the forums for them or anything, but the few people I have talked to that own them love the transmission.
@@BitcoinTo100K That depends where you live. I am in norther California and in a 250 mile range, all of them are going for MSRP based on cars dot com. But even at that, it certainly more than the Hyundai. So it may not be worth the extra 8-10k to everybody.
@@BitcoinTo100K It is a lot of money, for sure. But while its based on the civic platform, it drives nothing like a civic. Its like comparing a Focus to a Focus RS. Night and day difference. BUT, the Hyundai has way better bang for buck, even if it does depreciate like crazy.
I must be getting old. I just love how people throw around $30,000 like its pocket change. Having owned 27 cars over the past 40 years, some of which were well over $100K, I still never looked at $30K like it was packet change. $30K is easy to spend but unless you earn $150K or more a year with zero responsibility it takes some time to actually put $30K away. For today's youth with large student loans and barely a chance of ever owning their own homes, where are they supposed to park their $30K cars? I get it that this car appears to be a bargain next to most of the other cars in this test but that just further proves just how out of whack things have actually become in our modern day world. You are far better off getting a nice low mileage 5-8 year old car for $15K, doing some work to it and investing the other $15K that you would have plucked down on this car. BTW, I'm a car guy and love cars but also respect real world economics and when the well runs dry; you will lose your shorts on a car like this one if you need to dump it quickly. Don’t mean to rain on everyone's parade but the truth sometimes is hard to digest. Nice review BTW......................
Rumblestrip.NET thats the previous gen left overs or what your looking at is a fiesta “st-line” witch has way less hp and an auto when ford decided to not bring the new fist to the states they extended the current gen another year or so but after this they arnt bringing new ones over here
I just test drove a white base Veloster N to receive a $40 gift card and to see if it was worth the hype. Then I traded in my 9 month 19 35th anniversary GLI and I couldn’t be happier!
You sold me on the Fiesta ST and I finally bought one a year ago. Now you’ve sold me on the Veloster N. Lol I’ll have to wait to grab one off the used market.
Haven't regret mine since I got it :) The only things I think it really needs is slightly improved oil cooling, and higher temperature brake fluid out of the box, both of which primarily for hard track use. The power is plenty, the grip is good (Though I lust for Cup 2s on mine), and the chassis is fun, I just notice a little more heat in my oil than I'd like, and a little too much mush in the middle pedal by the time I get to my second session of the day :) Other than that, I don't know that there is any other new car that delivers this much potential, for this many dollars.
Hey what's happening I've purchase a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbo r spec I've changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips and the spoiler N it's awesome & loud enough for me with all the pops gurgling and burbling especially in cold start & I tested drive a veloster N it's awesome & thanks for sharing your videos with me 👋👍🙂🚘♥️
Just put my name on a 2020 Veloster N... coming out of a 3 year Cadillac ATS-V lease. If that doesn't say enough about this car, I'm not sure what will.
The ONLY reason why i won't get a Veloster N is due to the interior. I understand it is built to a price point, but after seeing how good the interior of the i30N is, it just feels like the N falls a tad behind. That being said, i loooove what Hyundai is doing with their performance cars. I have a 2017 Elantra Sport, which had the same engine/transmission from the Veloster Turbo, but has a super well sorted full independent suspension. I've tracked and autocrossed it and it's an absolute hoot
Makes me even happier with my i30 N performance. I had 4 different options, but after a test drive I just had to buy one. I laughed from joy within a minute of driving. And it sounds fantastic, it burbles, pops and crackles depending on the situation, hands down the best driving fwd car I've ever driven. I read that 2018 models can make up to 109db in noise. Do the Veloster N Performance come with the the same PZERO HN tires as in Europe? And does these have a valved exhaust like the i30 N performance?
I am on my third Veloster and I have the end with a performance package 2020 and I’ve never been happier. The sad part is is they are discontinued completely as of this year I don’t even understand why but it really sucks
im more partial to the Civic Type R, but the Veloster N is a solid second place for me, and im glad it won this comparo so many snobs in the comments are missing the point of why it won...
Car looks pretty appealing, and if it shows good durability it might fill an important market niche of cheap, manual sport-compact cars that are for driving.
The Type R wasn't part of the test, why, I'm not exactly sure. But if you ask me personally, in real world US dollars it costs a lot more to get one than the N, and the price differential is not worth it. The N is the best value In hot hatches right now, if you ask us.
TheSmokingTire Agreed the R costs more, but the R depreciation seems glacial. Not sure if this is due to demand/supply or dealer markup tricks, but you could own a CTR for a year and sell without losing much.......as long as you can get an R without dealer markup. A big " as long as".
As tested price of a Type R puts it in a different category of cars ( $35K and above). You can now get a Camaro LT1 (same engine as the SS) with 455 hp for the same price as a Type R. The Camaro LT1 runs low 12s in the 1/4 mile and puts up excellent times around a road course for a really good price.
@@BLACK05GO1 had no idea they had a Camaro LT1 now, I'm starting to come around on the Camaro since you can get one under sticker easily but the lack visibility out of the cabin is a turn off.
both cars punch above their price range, so i'm not sure how they thought the $10k CTR price difference was not worth it. the CTR is a track-focused DD that eats the veloster for lunch on the track while being bigger with better quality. they basically knocked the CTR for being not dramatic enough, despite that it was built that way on purpose for honda fans. all that being said, the c8 should have won this award, easily; the PCOTY was clearly a hot take meant to get attention.
I wish we got the Veloster N in Australia, we only get the i30N 4 door hatch which isn't a cool as the Veloster. I don't think they make the Veloster N in RHD though.
I'm having a hard time deciding on a performance car for daily driving. No children or minimum space requirements; looking at 2019+ MX-5 Miata, 2019+ Veloster N, 2018 Fiesta ST; currently own a 1996 NA miata. What is going to be the best option to upgrade from my current daily driver? Any other fun options out there that I need to consider? Need to be under the $30K mark.
There's not much out there in production that provides the pure driving excitement of the N at the same price-point. The closest comparison in terms of the driving excitement is the Camaro Turbo 1LE, IMO, but this goes a bit north of the $30k mark. If you are considering the MX-5, it may also be worth taking the BRZ/86 for a spin...but the N is a much more capable car than both of these out of the box.
the car is a great car for a great price and i'd love to own one. that being said, it felt like r&t made the choice just for the attention, not because the car actually deserves to be the pcoty; i'd have given it to the 'vette, even if i don't love the design that much (that back end - woof). i'm disappointed in r&t, but they've been going downhill for years (just like c&d), so I'm not terribly surprised.
I'm looking at getting a fiesta st or this which would you recommend. I could possibly go for a slightly used focus st...Just not sure I want to drive a Hyundai but it is a lot more hp than the fiesta
You serious ? It's not even a competition.. 104 page engine failure thread on the ST forum.. the only other hatch in the market that's more unrelibale than that is an RS www.focusst.org/threads/blown-motor-resource-thread.17529/
3:50 BTW can you get get a Fiesta ST in Canada? Definitely has more head room than the 1st gen because I couldn't even fit without a helmet and I'm about the same height as Matt.
If you're buying an N then it's because you want the best driving experience, not the fastest. Choosing an auto takes away from that. If you're just looking for a commuter, then get a GTI.
No, IMHO. An inherent component of this car's fun is the rowing of the gears. This is one of the few cars that you can tell the designers originally envisioned this specific performance variant as a 6MT from the start (the CTR is another of only a few new cars where this is extremely apparent.) When rowing through the gears on either of these cars, one feeling you get it "this is exactly how it is supposed to be". Hyundai's supposed wet DCT is likely going to be faster, but I would bet the farm it won't be nearly as fun.
The Veloster N has auto rev-matching (for downshifts). Get the manual; half the battle (and fun) has just been won for you (if you want it to be won). I would say that's a great feature for 1st time manual drivers.

Me too, I would have one in my driveway if they did. The only thing I am not crazy about with the Veloster is the different designs on the driver and passenger side of the car. I would have been happier if they would have just made it a 4dr. Even though the 2 dr driver's side looks far better imo.
I really really want a Veloster N
It’s such a fun to drive car on both the road and track
wait , wait, don't buy it yet , DCT version Is coming in 3 months with Gray mat color ( very sexy color )
@@ampiciline so your argument is to wait for an auto? yeeeeaaaaahhhhh.... man card revoked!
ampiciline I don’t want the DCT yes automatics have improved greatly since the past decade especially DCTs but the Veloster N is meant to have a manual transmission for what it is meant to be
The Veloster N is better off with the manual transmission
@@basithph8958 it drives me nuts how heavily split I am between a type r and a veloster n.

They should get Biermann to do a new Genesis Coupe
They should call it the Exodus Coupe
I'm sure he will
He will, soon
The G70 is the new "coupe."
These days, Coupes have four doors if you speak German.
I would love to see a upgraded interior option for this car. Imagine if they ditched the plastic interior and gave it a Genesis like interior. I would pay an extra 5k for that.
I would rather have 300 HP from the factory and the same interior.
They have an upgraded interior for the Veloster N at Sema. Looks sick too!!
You mean the Genesis Mint Concept from earlier this year? ;)
Same thought. The glossy interior plastics were terrible, even by 90s Hyundai standards. Would gladly pay extra for some leather or alcantara.
Check out the interior here:
ruclips.net/video/BSPxnrYMJ-U/видео.html
The guy I bought my Fiesta ST from, sold it to buy a Veloster N.
He made a good choice. Its a pretty big difference in performance. But the focus st has a much better interior
Damn impressive Hyundai! I expected like the c8 or 911 to win pcoty.
One of those should have.
@@DamionG1987 why? the hatch is still better value for the money.
@@ZombieZim713 Doesn't matter. Maybe a better value, doesn't make it a better car overall.
+nomnomguy680 that's exactly why they didn't pick either of those; it's r&t's version of trolling. that being said, the veloster n is a damn fine car and a great value; it just shouldn't have been the pcoty.
The c8 hasn't even come out yet dude
Good to see Hyundai finally "getting there!" More tire squeal than I would have expected, but ...! Anyway, glad you liked it, you enviable bastard!!!
Late to the party. This car changed my perception of Hyundai so much. I bought one.
I do like them but am very happy with my Fiesta ST still!
Ben Troxell As you should be fantastic car
Ben Troxell Just upgraded my 2016 Fiesta ST to the i30N. Mega happy with the upgrade😉
EVOTRANCE Apart from extra power how does it compare
Look for paint bubbling (rust developing) on the hood, door and hatch seams. Loved my Focus and Fiesta ST but rust on a car less than two year old is unacceptable.
tomtom255 Just did a full detail on it and no issues yet. 2016 with 25k on it.
very proud of Hyundai for building something this capable and bringing it to the masses. in the age of fuel economy and safety the fun factor isn't lost yet. i'll admit i wouldn't consider this car for another 3 years at least. for 15k you can get a FiST or if you do have 30K you can get a 2013 ZL1 Camaro, both incredible track cars.
Seems like everything I wish the new MINI hatch was
Jordan Dennis Maybe Mini will make next gen deliver on some of those dreams in 2023.
Congrats Hyundai. Hope they make a little, light, rwd sports coupe now that they have Albert Biermann on board.
Ya Be ready. That coupe will have the 3.3T from the G70/G80 or the new motor they debut 3.5T. I can't wait. HKG(Hyundai Kia Genesis) is going to stir up the import and performance soon within a couple years.
Did I say I can't wait yet?? Lol
The only hot hatch i will choose over this N is Type R. I rate N higher than GTI, Golf R and any Mini Cooper
I agree
RealAvus : Then figure the price difference is over $10K for the Honda.
Drove both. The N has a nicer sound in stock form but the Type R was way more fun. Obviously you pay more though.
exactly; the way i put it: you're paying more, but you're also getting just as much in terms of value. bang for buck, you can't go wrong with either one.
The type r is overpriced from the factory plus mark up so the veloster is almost as good and way cheaper
These days, Hyundai-Kia cars are getting better😂Telluride Stinger Veloster N,,,, I'm looking forward to Growth😁😁
They are going to make a mid engined Veloster N in 2021 or 2020 or something. That is going to be amazing.
If Hyundai could help build up the aftermarket for these, it could rival the CTR in the long run. We need more hot hatches.
This may very well happen, with Hyundai releasing aftermarket upgrades, and possibly even a higher-performing variant of the N. The speed in which the N line is maturing is absolutely insane, IMHO. www.motorauthority.com/news/1125820_veloster-n-performance-concept-headlines-hyundai-s-sema-offerings

Wow! Your helmet is great!
LOVE having Matt back! ♥️
Only current car I would replace my Mazdaspeed 3 with.
You need to drive the Civic Type R before making that choice.

It will be interesting to see how this Veloster N gives birth to other performance orientated Hyundai models. Maybe a return of a V6 RWD coupe/sedan

Probably not in the hyundai line up. Genesis G70 sport is perhaps the type of thing you are thinking of?
Sonata N in Q3 next year, 2.5l turbo 300hp 310tq, 8 speed wed DCT and AWD.
@@danielboyd7810 I meant Hyundai. So ideally a performance V6 coupe/sedan that doesn't cost $50k.
@Kevin Schmidt Yeah, I know. I wrote Hyundai.
Fiesta ST still available for sale in the US, just configured one last night on the Ford Website. Just under $25k as I had it optioned.
Only what is left in dealer inventory, they stopped production in May
He’s talking about the new model the one you can get in the US still is just what the dealer has left of the previous gen

Rumblestrip.NET thats the previous gen left overs or what your looking at is a fiesta “st-line” witch has way less hp and an auto when ford decided to not bring the new fist to the states they extended the current gen another year or so but after this they arnt bringing new ones over here
Bro you can find them wayyyyy cheaper new. Also used is the way to go because they depreciate so much. I love mine.
The power is plenty, the grip is good (Though I lust for Cup 2s on mine), and the chassis is fun, I just notice a little more heat in my oil than I'd like, and a little too much mush in the middle pedal by the time I get to my second session of the day :)
Other than that, I don't know that there is any other new car that delivers this much potential, for this many dollars.
Always love Veloster's styling, so the N treatment is definitely welcome. 😍
I like the driver's side better.
WB Wayne yeah, the quirky 3 door design still throws me
Hey what's happening I've purchase a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbo r spec I've changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips and the spoiler N it's awesome & loud enough for me with all the pops gurgling and burbling especially in cold start & I tested drive a veloster N it's awesome & thanks for sharing your videos with me 👋👍🙂🚘♥️
Just put my name on a 2020 Veloster N... coming out of a 3 year Cadillac ATS-V lease.
I'm a Honda guy but I would give one of these a long look at the very least for a next car. I'm curious to see how they hold up over time.
This is what Honda should have done with their type R. Clean and simple like the DC5 and FD2.
@@seanm.collins9888 I agree. I can appreciate the Type R but it's kind of overwrought while I could see myself using the N as a daily.
10 year or 100k mile warranty my boy... hyundai doesnt joke around nowadays
The sad part is is they are discontinued completely as of this year I don’t even understand why but it really sucks
im more partial to the Civic Type R, but the Veloster N is a solid second place for me, and im glad it won this comparo
so many snobs in the comments are missing the point of why it won...
My only problem with the Type R is the price, looks are subjective but I think it looks like dog turd but who cares when it’s fun to drive
Kdm came a long way real fast. Hard to think this car came from the same people that made the tiburon
Had a 2013 turbo. That was a fun car but this seems to take it to another level.
We should get the I30N.
I couldn't agree more. So much better looking. Would be like a bargain Audi S5 Sportback.
Car looks pretty appealing, and if it shows good durability it might fill an important market niche of cheap, manual sport-compact cars that are for driving.
welL-made wagon type! I really like exhaust sounds dope yah
Imagine with better tires, a tune, and full exhaust :)
I wish they had the Elantra GT N here!
And I wish they had the I30 N. Would be like a baby Audi A5 Sportback
That's a great little car for the money
With the type r being barely 4 grand more expensive, is it really the better car to buy 🤔
What about the Civic Type R? or is that in a different league?
I really wish we could get the Megane RS in the states. It's the only hot hatch I like (looks beautiful with orange paint job).
Thank you sir! Good job
the car is a great car for a great price and i'd love to own one. that being said, it felt like r&t made the choice just for the attention, not because the car actually deserves to be the pcoty; i'd have given it to the 'vette, even if i don't love the design that much (that back end - woof).
i'm disappointed in r&t, but they've been going downhill for years (just like c&d), so I'm not terribly surprised.

I'm looking at getting a fiesta st or this which would you recommend. I could possibly go for a slightly used focus st...Just not sure I want to drive a Hyundai but it is a lot more hp than the fiesta
You serious ? It's not even a competition.. 104 page engine failure thread on the ST forum.. the only other hatch in the market that's more unrelibale than that is an RS www.focusst.org/threads/blown-motor-resource-thread.17529/

how is it for heel toe?
Charles Hosea it’s fine. It also has rev matching, but can be turned off.
On the track the N might be faster with suspension on sport instead of sport plus, give the suspension some give to give more grip to the front tires
Love the Homer Simpson helmet!
I know they have already been compared, but I would be interested in Matt's opinion. Veloster N vs Civic Type R?

How is the camera mounted for this video? Gimbal?
I may have to go test drive one of these. It could be my next daily as my Focus ST is nearly paid off.

Almost didn't click on this because it didn't look like the typical One Take thumbnail!
Gonna trade my 2013 turbo in for the N!
Why is this always compared to a Fiesta ST and not the Focus ST? Same price point and similar power.
Remember fast furious Tokyo drift, « what you think !! Im gonna let you roll in Hyundai » rip Hann .
sir , the DCT version of N is coming soon .....should I wait for DCT ???
