Scotland just need to have a "fuck it" attitude this year.
We have injuries out the wazoo, will be going in with a patchwork team and unknown expectations as a result. We just need to take it one game at a time and see how we go. Time for the new guys to step up and impress.

very hapy with the Stafford McDowall appreciation though I do think he also brings a kicking game with his left boot. I would also agree with the Josh Bayliss shout but its a shame he got injured.

I actually think Gregor may go Tom Jordan at 12. Most people think it’s his best position, he just doesn’t get to play there much because he’s so flexible and 12 is such an area of strength for Glasgow. Not to mention his mix of creativity and sheer violence is the closest we can get to ST. Think that’s why he’s brought in a few back 3 players rather than centres as cover, Jordan now been seen as a 12 rather than a full back. The other option is to go completely different mould and try have teams struggle with what to expect and go Hutchinson. It’s wild that 12 is such an area of strength, when we beat England down at Twickenham in the Cam Redpath debut we thought he’d end up a test centurion, now him and the captain are both missing from 12 and we still have serious and multiple options. It’s why out of our “big 3” (ST, Finn and Zander) Sione is probs the one we can most afford to lose. Then I actually think it’s Finn as TJ pops into 10. If Zander goes the whole things goosed

Scotland will play well again and be again undone by something inexplicable. I’ll get this in before the tournament begins. One bizarre refereeing decision will lead to a loss which we then compound with a crap performance in another game. Think 2015 RWC or last years classic “the ball is down but I’m not awarding the try”-nonsense against France (remember that?). Every year we get one of these. Which we compound by an errant lineout throw or something dumb. Glorious failure once more. I’m not blaming the refs by the way, it’s just that we always get some bizarre call which just punctures the whole team. We cannot recover from adversity. But we’re still fun to watch, we love Finn and we’ll beat England again (I hope).

Scotland have grown more than any other team on the last 5 years. But unfortunately the other teams were way ahead and got a little better since.
Scotland can win and deserve a 6 nations but they need the big 3 to take each other's scalps so that they can get through the wreckage.

In regards to the last section of the video, this year is all about the Ireland game for Scotland.
An Ireland that it feels like is plateauing and is without their head coach at Murrayfield is the best shot we've had at them in what feels like a decade. Anything other than a victory there and I feel like that's it for Townsend.

On McDowall, I think something that separates him from Sione is just a lack of aggression around the pitch it feels like. He's always calm and doesn't panic too much but at the same time it results in a lack of penetration as he can occasionally just accept the hit instead of really fighting for the gainline. I could be wrong.

On top of the dummy lines, the thing about Sioni is he crashes hard a few times then, just as the defence starts to prepare that, throws outrageous Finn Russell-style long passes to the wing, then switches back so the defence never really know what to be preparing for. He also seems to have a 60%+ no-look pass on short balls

@@ciantisdall Yes and no. The talent is huge, and historic for Scotland, but the positions not talked about in this video are where Scotland have players who are not Six Nations champion-standard. Loose-head, hooker and second row are not strong, scrum half is alright at best, and replacement tight-head is a big drop-off. Sadly a new Coach is the best bet. Gregor has been great but he has been here so long without tangible success. He’s an absolute star - and can give so much to another team. We have had all he has to give already though - and we need new blood. Look at the difference Franco Smith has made at Glasgow. Gregor has had his two shots at a World Cup cycle and it’s someone else’s turn. That and a BIG investment in grass roots rugby. Look at Ireland U20s - that’s the route to success.

It's hard to disagree that if it's more of the same something serious has to change. It's two years to the world cup, you would have a full season to bed a new coach. At the risk of making a trite comparison with football, it reminds me of the Gareth Southgate situation. Gregor is by far and away the most successful (and best) Scotland coach of the professional era but there's no evidence that he can do better than what he has done. At a certain point it probably makes sense to see what someone else can do. Ask Franco Smith if he can take over in the summer.

Don't understand the Fergus Burke thing. I've watched Sarries several times this season and been wholly unimpressed with him.
Jordan for me is the future Scotland 10. He is not as dynamic as Finn passing wise but physicality, speed and defensively he is offers more. In Glasgow's run to win URC Jordan continually made big tackles and thrived under pressure.
Scotland tossed him at the deep end in Autumn series at 15 and he looked to the manor born.
Thing you didn't mention with McDowall is he has a good left boot. Not quite James Lowe but a great option for 22 exits. He is a bit on the slower side...and that does worry me.

When you discussed back row not hitting rucks as much the injury to Cummins will in an odd way help that. I believe Johnny Gray will start with Gilchrist. Gray solid all around but the thing he is best at? Hitting rucks. By far best Scottish forward at cleaning out rucks when he was one of first names on Scotland team sheet. He has been doing that well for Bordeaux this season as well. Yes, lack athleticism to be as disruptive at line out and in general like Cummins. However, his ability defensively and hitting rucks gives Scotland something they haven't had in a while.

I'm going to say it and it probably won't be popular but Duhan needs to be relegated to an impact sub. He is world class with the ball in hand but he can't tackle, doesn't pass well, can't kick and can be a liability more than he helps. Steyn and Graham are far better starting options on the wing.

    • @gordon1545

If France click Friday night and run in 8 to 10 tries the pressure then rises on the other 3 main contenders to do the same thing. BPs and points scored against Italy and above all Wales could easily decide the outcome. Im going Ireland France sharing 1st and 2nd England Scotland sharing 3rd 4th Italy 5th and spoon for Wales. I actually see it otherwise. I think Ireland need to beat England in the opening weekend. It will then be a real humdinger Scotland v Ireland , both teams on a win but Scotland / Glasgow pack with home field advantage.
Scotland then go into week three and England away on two wins. With England struggling on two losses.
If in fact England beat Ireland away then I even fancy them to get a result against France at home. But either way their odds against Scotland at home are way up. Much prefer facing them with two ‘L’s.
Ireland will naturally do the job against Italy final weekend.
In other words, even with injuries, Ireland, France, Scotland can all do the job against each other but fancy the home team to prevail. The way the fixtures fall is that S have I at home and I have France at home before the final weekend. I’d like the England morale stamped out first two games to minimise the banana skin for S!

  • @johnpollock7952

What do Scotland needs to happen.... a level playing field from the officials. Simple.
We maybe had enough in the tank to over win games, but now we have injuries our options are more limited, and we dont have enough to steam roller teams.
    We need
Nic Berry to award tries when we score tries
Christophe Ridley to read up on croc rolls and only use red cards when the laws dictate
Angus Gardner to penalise deliberate knock ons, and when they happen, and not 5 minutes later when the clock is about to go red
Ben O'Keefe to award penalties evenly and not achieve records penalties in a row to the poorer team
I mean that was only last year, I'll stop there.

6N losses last year were down to unfocused leadership on the field in real time. By contrast, total focus and leadership is what Sione brings to teams. Without him leading, this year's campaign is back to being a lottery again, miracle stuff mixed with pratfalls.
Don't really agree about losing Townsend. The team's built in his image as player and that's what makes people want to watch Scotland. You get flair, daring and the unexpected, geared to attack from anywhere. When he goes, so does that style.

    • @Cpchurch87
      @Cpchurch87 12 дней назад

@jlm4455 they were closer to France (who were pretty poor last season) and England but still got outworked in both games. Ireland out carried them all day, and it was a great defensive effort from Scotland but if you exclude Jack Dempsey, their entire starting and sub pack made 30 carries for 25m and had to make 200+ tackles. Their scramble defence was great, but I just don't think they have the physicality to match these packs going forward over a full game. They put in a huge shift defensively to make so many tackles, but I still think they are nowhere near as physical and I think France in particular will really put it to them

This old adage of Finn being inconsistent is so outdated it's crazy it's still brought up. He is consistently an 8/10. One of the best 10's defensively and by far the best distributing 10, and similarly good at tactical kicking. There's a reason he's joined bath and taken them by the scruff of the neck to the final of the prem and now to clear favourites for it. Russell is the best 10 in the world and incredibly consistent nowadays. If you think otherwise you simply don't watch him play tbh.
