@@DisplacedGamers It sure is. Which reminds me, I have a small anecdote for you. Funny that you mentioned Wing commander - According to David Wessman, the engine for Wing Commander was partly made by reverse engineering the SWOTL engine, so in a way, Larry Holland was responsible for both very popular space franchises!

_Wore_ is just how most Americans pronounce _war._ I don't know how A became an O sound before R. Normally pronouncing A as an O is an English thing. Like, the English would pronounce _ball_ as _bowl,_ and _saw_ as _sore._ Yes, they add an R.
Meanwhile, Americans tend to pronounce O as A. Like how _God_ becomes _Gawd,_ and _sorry_ become _sawrry._

I can say without irony that X-wing's iMUSE is impressive to this day. Most games, even modern ones, don't have details like that. It's generally just a static track playing. If it does have dynamic music in some form it's genrerally pretty clunky, unlike X-wing's smooth transitions. I know it's harder to achieve this with high quality music, but still, it's a sad degradation.

The trick is to have a multitracked audio format, create a full-length version of every variant of the song, and have them all playing at the same time and mixed on-the-fly for the appropriate situation. I think Zelda did this, but its kinda the brute-force way of doing things. Just about the only possible way it could work with sampled music though.

  • @GeoffreyToday

Still the number one spot on my all time top five PC games list. I remember being super excited to get the CD-Rom edition, only to be super bummed out that it had swapped the iMuse system for actual recordings from the Star Wars score. Nothing against the recordings, but part of the magic of X-Wing was they dynamic music system. Having the score punctuate what you were doing was awesome.
Somewhere on youtube is a video where a guy used something, I think he called them "sound fonts" to really enhance the iMuse music in X-Wing. It was pretty awesome, and something I think would have been a much better upgrade for the game than using pre-recorded music.

I've watched the Star Wars original films trilogy for as long as I've been alive, and even so far back, I was already dreaming about some sort of dogfight simulator with X-Wings and stuff. I had no PC or internet even less so for most of the 90s nor parents interested into the subject, so I've been hanging onto this dream until one day, when we already had a PC for a couple of months by the end of 1998 or 99 I believe, 8/9-year-old me stumbled upon *X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter* in some shop somewhere in London, probably inside a promo bin or something and ended up getting it on a whim, not knowing anything about the game nor expecting anything in particular out of it. It was just a Star Wars game like the other two I had on my Gameboy, I probably told to myself, so hopefully this one will be better (those two Star Wars games were punishingly hard and not very enjoyable I found, the first one was just titled "Star Wars" and the other one was "Super Star Wars Return of the Jedi").
And oh boy it sure was, since it's basically the game I've always dreamt of, and then some, because not only did it fulfill this dream of mine, it pretty much outperformed what I ever was expecting from it since this game totally overwhelmed me due to its extremely complex gameplay. Even though I knew I only barely scratched the surface of what the game had to offer back then, and that it made me realise that this game was well beyond my capabilities and understanding, this helped me enjoy the existence of the game and playing it even more. It felt like being dropped into an actual cockpit and to fly the damn thing and to shoot stuff even though I barely knew what I was doing.
It was the most absolute blast I've ever had in those days, and I'll forever be thankful to this game for it.
Nearing my 30th year now, I played it a bit recently, and I still got the sparkles in my eyes when playing it.
It's so sad that there's never been an actual Star Wars flight/dogfight simulation ever since the X-Wing series. I've enjoyed the Rogue Squadron games as much as the next guy, but those really were broadly-reaching arcade games which never lived up to the simulation aspect of the X-Wing games.

    My thoughts:
We need a new Star Wars flight sim, just like the old X-Wing games. New space sims like Elite: Dangerous are way to complicated. X-Wing was simple enough to be immediately approachable, but still let you fiddle with ship controls and pull off crazy maneuvers. Mods for the old ones are great and all, but we are overdue for a brand new one. Plus, releasing one would make Thrustmaster and Logitech stocks go through the roof since they would sell out of all their HOTAS stock. I doubt we'll ever get one while EA has the exclusive rights (since flight sims and consoles have never really gotten along), but after that time has ended, some smaller publisher should be able to snag the rights.
X-Wing, TIE Fighter and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter all had sprite-based cockpits, but every part of them was tailor-made for that ship, with each readout actually happening on the panel. X-Wing Alliance threw that all out the window in the name of 3D, where instead you have a low-poly dashboard with some random floating vector-based readouts floating in the air. Much less immersive, and is a prime example of how the last generation of 2D was more mature than the first generation of 3D.
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance lost a lot when they left iMuse behind and went with redbook CD tracks. Nobody can truly hate straight, uncut John Williams, but after five hours in the cockpit, you really start to miss having a dynamic soundtrack.
    Great video, by the way.

    • @DisplacedGamers
      @DisplacedGamers  4 года назад +2

I agree with you on so many points. I feel that if I were a company that manufactured joysticks, I would want to chase an exclusive license for producing official SW X-Wing-branded controls and such.
The sprite-based cockpits really added a lot of charm. The lower resolution also allowed for a slightly more abstract artist interpretation - and this is true of any game of that era, honestly. Rather than see pixel art acquire higher resolutions to use, we basically saw the entire industry move to 3D rather quickly.
Totally with you on the soundtrack. I love me some John Williams, but the dynamic soundtrack can really give you a rush while playing.

Not exactly new or even close to new, but have you ever messed with the Jump to Lightspeed expansion of the old Star Wars Galaxies MMO? You can still play it on various emulators. It's a pretty nice space sim. Not just instanced dogfights or other arcadey game modes. A space sim. You can customize ships with a bunch of different parts. Asteroid mining too. I've always wished for more Star Wars games like that.

I prefer Sierra over LucasArts, but I gotta admit that iMuse was the absolute shit.
Best example of an adaptive soundtrack in a Sierra game that I can recall has to be the Galaxy Galleria in Space Quest IV, which is not entirely unlike Woodtick in Monkey Island 2, as seen in this video... just much simpler, without the transition riffs. It's just various stores' own themes playing on top of the galleria theme.
