I absolutely remember the poster from local comics shop and a few years ago acquired that poster as well- love Sergio’s dragons and dinosaurs. Love his caricature like style- forever Madly!
Yay! So happy for fellow fans who are able to find treasures like these! And it’s also good to know I’m not alone in my love for Sergio’s dragons and dinos! I absolutely love PC 3 “The Caravan” with those huge dino beasts-of-burdens! :)
Glad you enjoyed the video! There was one other drawing/copy by the same artist. It was of the cover of Epic #4 (and I like it even more than the copy of #2.) But… it’s a bit problematic… for reasons I won’t get into here and now, 😀
OMG! I'm Canadian too (grew up in Mississauga, went to University in Hamilton). And oddly enough, Groo #2 was the one Groo missing in my Epic run when I was cataloguing my comics a few years ago (after a long absence from collecting comics). so I had to pick it up on eBay a few months ago (because YES the cover is one of the best). The other early Groo I am missing is that great Back/Front Pacific comic cover but I'll get it one day. Also - yes - I was a teenager when I started collecting Groo and yes I stopped collecting Groo in the late 80's when I went to University. Thankfully I kept all my comics in my parent's house so I didn't need a friend to find my collection :). BTW - about the "Canadian Price Variant" vs "not" - I think the Spider-man logo means it is a direct market copy versus newsstand edition (bar code). News stand editions are a little more valuable for collectors especially in the late 80's/90's when most comics were being bought in comic shops (direct market editions). It is weird your comic shop had both. Most comic shops ONLY had the direct market editions.
Yeah, it is strange. If someone was telling me their story, I’d tell them they’ve got their comics mixed up. But not mine. It’s just strange. 😉 I was down in Toronto just a few days ago!
Arghhhhh!! So you got me flipping through my collection because I swear there's a panel or something where Groo has cut the tip off the dragon.... but I can't find it. Maybe some false memory from the '80s... but I can almost see the drawing of it in my mind. Killing me. This issue 2 now haunts me! 😀
Oh! That does sound familiar, though I can’t think of it off the top of my head. I do love where Groo cuts the top off of the wizard’s nose… I think that was from the story that introduced Arba and Dakarba.
@@GrooTube is it a Mandela effect with that dragon tail? Lol Random side note: I only recently picked up issue 2 from a local comic shop, and when I opened it this morning, I see the previous owner had Sergio and Mark sign it. I compared the signature for Argones to one I already had from SDCC '18, and seems to check out.
Still watching, but thought I'd mention your original bags and boards before I finish. Please, for the love of cheese dip, replace them. The polybags and the boards (especially the older uncoated brown one I saw) weren't designed to live for 40 years. I've had mixed luck with my old comics. Some have survived ok, while others have started to let acid leak into the comics and they've started browning and colours leaking through the covers onto the inside pages.
You mean the cover dragon’s name is “Sid?” Or maybe Kayla’s little dragon? Which one and where is he named that? I’ve got a pretty extensive database of Groo characters and seem to have missed that one. I’d love to add it if you can give the details! 😀
@@GrooTube memory not good in old age lol There is a named dragon that Mark named in the letter pages bx someone asked what is the name of the dragon that keeps popping up? His answer was the dragons name is Cid or sid. My Groo collection is in storage but memory been pinging. . Cid might have a rounder face. Like the one Chakaal was hanging from on one cover . . sorry don't have Total recall lol
I hate to be a nudge, but the "copy" or "homage," which I understand is a photocopy of the "copy," does not identify itself as such, which it should do so very clearly so that anyone merely glancing at it would recognize it as a copy and not an original.
You’re right. I understand it was done as a commission, so, giving the benefit of the doubt to the artist that made the copy, maybe the artist didn’t think it would ever be seen by the public. But… yeah, the artist’s name and attribution of the original work by Sergio seems to be the right thing to do. Yet, when I’ve drawn Sergio’s characters in the past, I didn’t think to do that, so… it’s complicated.
@@GrooTube Drawing Groo or other characters for your own amusement is fine. It's selling them that's bad. It's also complicated in some respects and in others it's not. I remember when this came up with this art and this artist and the guy who commissioned it. Where the line is between someone like Sergio doing a Sergio version of Batman and someone doing a Batman that would justifiable get DC Comics upset is a little fuzzy. But something as clearly a copy of Sergio's style that many folks would/could think was an original Sergio is not fuzzy or complicated. It's just wrong. The artist should have very clearly marked it as his and not Sergio's. That would make it a legitimate "homage." Turns out the artist also did some Marvel covers and he got turned over to Disney. Don't know what happened, but I'd be surprised if he didn't get a nasty letter from a high priced Disney lawyer.
@@rufferto5429 That's an interesting one. I'm not familiar with this piece or the artist, but it seems odd to me that anyone would commission a piece to be an exact clone of another artist, instead of going direct to that artist. I guess the price might be a factor, but still weird to me, espcially how if you love a piece so much and love an artist so much, I would surely want my money to go to them. And if the person doing the commissioning is in the US, then Sergio would have surely been at several comic cons each year.

Always loved the dragon drawing
One of these days I’ll get myself the lead figure of this cover dragon that came in the Groo minis set. 😀

That happened to the Floom-Floom’s tail in the Death Of Groo graphic novel. Great scene!

Sid appears in multiple issues
I forget what issue but kid Groo brings Kid Groolia a baby dragon. His mother is Sid who ruins Groolia hair
