Love this video and installation Josh. One quick question though. You said you were putting in a 200wh battery. That seems awful big 2560wh? That is like 10 times more power than you’ll ever need. Am I missing something here?
so, here's why. I spoke with the rep from strainrite and asked him about the power output of this, and told him my exact plans, they recommended I consider a 100Ah battery...so I went a little overboard and got the heated 200Ah battery for peace of mind. So...it's overbuilt, but we have a massive amount of power storage which is key. It's actually only 4 times the size recommended 50Ah v/s 200Ah my brotha
Hey josh definitely learning this living on a farm is freaking awesome..don't stop making videos cuz I'll b lost.... blessings from ur higher power....is da way to go
Those Nemtek energisers are the longest lasting units I have used. The remote is RFID like your fancy phones, you configure the settings on the remote LCD then place the remote near the front of the unit and it updates the energiser with the settings. You hardly use the remote after your fence is set up and working, its more of a security thing so nobody can tamper with the fence, and let your wild animals out. The warning light usually flashes if there is a short on the fence. The guys that make these energisers make serious gear, the Agricultural products are probably the tamer part of their product range.
Hey Josh. Maybe to late now but I added switches around the paddocks normally near gates so that I could isolate just one area without shutting the whole fence down. Great if a tree comes down or something and you cant clear it straight away. Also I ran the insolated wire in the ground through Alkathene pipe for extra protection under the gateways, also a good insulator. Just loop the ends over so it cant fill up with water.
FANTASTIC! I will share with some friends and see if THEY can use any of the stuff with the BATTERY and the SOLAR PANEL! Friends in TEXAS who are at the mercy of ERCOT! BLESSED BE!
The slot on the bracket on the back is for a T post. I always attach the ground steak to the fence. It helps spread the ground for long runs in dry weather. You have steel fence post witch will add to the grounding.
While I can appreciate what you are saying here, It's honestly best to have a stand alone ground rod my friend. I do ground my portable fencing chargers to the actual fence but here's why that's not good for permanent. LIGHTNING RISK....think about this...if I ground it to the entire fencing system, there's a much much higher chance of lightening striking and feeding down the fenceline v/s a single ground rod system. Now...I didn't just pull this idea out of thin air....I'm a trained electrician and lineman by trade, lightning hits metal and will fry everything attached to it. Hence the reason transformers and some switch gear is grounded individually at the poles. Make sense brother....I totally hear ya, but lightning only has to strike anywhere on the farm near the fence to fry this system v/s one single ground rod driven to depth right beside the fence charger
So a one in a million lightning strike verses no or weak fence power far from the ground stake. How many miles of wire from the ground? Every fence post is a ground steak. I understand your point but this seems like a risk/reward subject.@@StoneyRidgeFarmer
I work on building signs and high rise signs and we use those type of switches. Friendly tip mount the switch opposite of what you would find in your house. Just in the random chance a bird lands on the switch and turns it off
Give it some thought. Get two wheel hand cart. For your nice fence control box. Place the box on cart and in center of the handle bolt pipe to mount your solar panel. Be portable and also panel not over in pasture side
You need a horizontal post between this post and the new one you put in. This will allow you to get a much better solar angle, especially as it varies over the year
We had a standard piece of barb wire on top of the fence. If you have bulls they live to tear up a woven wire fence. We had a fence charger that worked on a 6 volt tractor battery and it wa s good for 6 months before it would need to be charged. My luck if I had something like you have someone would steal it.
Any wire entering a box or structure should have a loop before entering. The rain water will follow it right in if not. The loop will let it drip in the ground.
I agree, out of the weather is best. I like this set up, it’s advanced enough to be really functional, but not way overdone with all kinds of crazy features and extra stuff to break. A question question I have is how hot does that unit get, is that being closed up like that with the unit right on top of the battery going to be an issue in the summer? I love the idea of the self Heating battery, that’s pretty awesome. I wonder how much energy it takes to keep it warm 🤔
Might want to check the heat inside during the summer when it gets hot. I know the box is plastic, indirect sunlight it could heat up and cause issues with the fence charger. If the box is waterproof and are proof that might want to swell and Shrink with heat if so you might have to put a vent in it that has a filter in it that keeps most of the moisture from getting in. I think I might have went with a different battery meter. If that is like most lithium-ion that has a pretty flat discharge curve and then at the very end drops off suddenly. You have to have a really accurate voltage reading and know the curve to see where it's going to go out on you at. You probably looked it up already. Take care of yourself and be glad your cows don't have horns
I've found that anything that moves like that doesn't last. if the solar panel gets damaged then the battery has enough charge to run this fence for probably a month, plenty of time to get a new solar panel up for charging. Wind systems are cool....but moving parts wear and break
Great video Josh!! Good luck with the fence. I really liked the box!! You might be wishing next week that you hadn’t trimmed your beard. It’s going to get CRAZY cold from what I understand.
My goodness I mentioned not too long ago how bushy your beard was getting and now you trimmed it way back. Wow must’ve been getting a little out of hand. You’re gonna need that whiskers to keep the face warm Josh you always get a good video sweetie. I always do glad to see things are going good for you, you take care and God bless my friend❤❤❤❤❤
shew...when I had that cold a few weeks back, I had a reaction to some sort of medication....it was so itchy I had to let it go...but it grows so fast it will be back in a few weeks! Spring beard right! Wooooo!!
everything looks great but i would drill a hole in the rear of the box installing a large flat washer on the inside a all thread bolt through the box , then through the post and nut it down, , . now the box isnt going anywhere? the flip switch should be on the inside of the box , not outside? for the solar panel on each side to max out the battery to full capacity at all times.
Tom has a dairy.....he doesn't move his cattle every 12 hours like I do. Putting a $2k scratching post in for the cows to pass by it every 90 days doesn't work for me. I've been to Tom's place.....we have something he doesn't have....TREES lol....there are 10k trees on the farm for scratching, but the cows still use the fence. Price one of those scratching posts.....unbelievably expensive!
You will need a switch rated for the voltage of the shock voltage usually 20000 volts if not it can just jump internally through the switch. Also with a metal switch you will want to ground the switch to the ground post so when it does jump it doesnt shock you. Just some advise.
With about $20 worth of parts you can make any dumb 12V fence charger "smart" and turn it on and off with your phone. I use it all the time for my hotwire fencing.
If it’s all weather then you should never run it in a sealed container as the manufacturer designed it to radiate heat rather then exhaust it. Keeping my stuff out the elements sure but wouldn’t keep it in enclosed container on all sides. Air flow is key to most devices
this container will breath my brother....but I get what you are saying totally...might need a little thermostat in there with a couple computer fans.....I'll keep an eye on it
Great set up Josh. Thanks for sharing. The switch is on the battery wire and not the output wire to the fence..... could it still run off solar with the battery disconnected, or does it need the battery to run the controller? 🤔
Hi Josh, I hope that the STYROFOAM "basket" will NOT get too hot and melt from the BATTERY? Will You have some kind of SHELTER over the BATTERY stuff to prevent a possibility of over heating??
You must not know much about solar panels they are designed to handle hail. Now hail that is to large will damage it but that's going to damage everything anyway
We have a solar well, soar fence chargers and solar cameras all over the property and have yet to have an issue. I do have insurance to cover hail damage....and we do get hail sometimes, but if it's that bad there are much bigger fish to fry....buildings and cars getting damaged

barbed wire is great.....woven wire is better....it's just that simple. How many infections, cuts, hardware disease and other disparities have been created by barbed wire my brother.
