Extending the range of classical & acoustic guitars: The Keel neck design

  • THis is a design I came up with over 10 years ago that provides a better playing experience above the neck/body joint of acoustic guitars. This video shows the adjustable version I used with some acoustic and classical guitars. Watch for the photos at the end.

    Maybe I'm a stalker... I've watched many of your videos already. KUDOS. Keep them coming. I didn't see (sorry if I'm blind) nothing about you "process" to fast assemble/disassemble when testing guitars ( the use of the "special" spool campls, for example)

      Well, it's not a particularly fast process. The top and sides are assembled and the top is finished with the bridge glued in place. Then the back is clamped on and the neck attached and strung up. Then it is played in for several days until it settles down a bit and starts to find it's voice. If the top is too thick this won't happen, so you know where to start. Then resonance testing is done and it is disassembled. Adjustments for top / air resonances are performed and the process repeats until I like the results.
      Even then it needs to be noted that the clamps add a huge amount of mass to the sides and the end result (after gluing the back in place) may need to be modified with the body intact. Since I usually fully line the sides, the loss of the clamp mass doesn't seem to skew the results that much (so far...).

    these ideas come along, and dissappear! when someone designs something to be the next big thing, in the guitar world, how many fail? how many succeed and actually have longevity 100000s to a handful!

    Great simple idea. Why is the soundhole relatively small looking especially if it causes access issues?

      The soundhole size in this case is limited by the size of the upper bout. This particular body shape has a pretty small upper bout. A 12 fret neck allows for a larger soundhole, and one of those is shown in the photos at the end of the video.
