Update. The much easier way to open the globe is to use a hair dryer and focus on the white plug where the threads are to screw it back in the stick. Use mini flathead screwdrivers, like from eyeglass repair kits, and work them between threads and the white plug.

It's something Kandinsky, harkening back to Dot Point Jump, but I'm not sure. I'm definitely not a princess/feather/garden type of girl, so gonna have to think it through.
