  • Hotel Palace was built in 1928. For decades it was a popular tourist destination. In the 1980s a new wing was added. I haven't been able to find information about when it closed. In 2005 it was bought by a developer who has failed to follow through on improvements. For years it has been abandoned and left to decay. I saw some teenagers hanging out on the front steps a few times. There are reports of regular fires occurring inside. The video will show evidence of fires in some of the rooms. This is not a comprehensive tour as I didn't go into every room. I walked the hallways and the stairways and went into a few of the rooms.

Thank you for the video and for being brave enough to go inside and record it! I have thought about doing it a few times but it never felt safe. Every summer during family visits I stroll by and admire its presence and newest interventions. As far as I know, it was closed in 2005 and one year later Palace II (from 1971) and the Dependance, which was built in 1937, were demolished. Palace II was the latest addition to the hotel site and the city planners at the time regarded it as misplaced and too big as it was disrupting the waterfront too much. It was bought off again in 2020 by another investment group for half a million euros but the owner died shortly after and so the big question remains what to do with this building. As it had many functions before - club, refugee house during Yugoslavian war, day care for children, … I never regarded it merely as a hotel.

Thank you for the background. I found some older pictures but there is not much info about the glory days of the hotel online. It's a great location! I walked by it many times as well before daring to venture inside. Frequently teenagers were hanging out on the steps to the main entrance. They were always friendly. My last couple weeks in Kastela I came by every day to feed the cats living next to the hotel in the little carnival area. Happy memories!

Sjećam se hotela dok je radio, uvijek pun gostiju, uredan, sređen, lijep, a gle sad. Ne mogu vjerovati što vidim.

I've been there for holiday in October 1998. It's so sad to see the demolition. It was a beautiful place and we had a lot of fun there.

I wish I could have seen it then. It’s a shame it wasn’t kept up. It’s cool that you saw it in better days.

This is a valuable property. I stayed there myself. Those were the days... That "investment group" cannot just consist of that owner who died, and if they have this in their portfolio they must start doing something with it. Granted the climate is better there, but if left to decay, the valuable building (as distinct from the ground) will go to waste. I keep thinking there might be some strategy behind this. Not sure now, but it could be that the building is heritage protected and cannot be demolished unless and until seriously unsafe...

Enjoy your visit! I wonder how (or if) it has changed. Watch your step inside. Directly south of the hotel is a little carnival area. There were many young cats around there last year. I would always bring a little food to feed them when I walked by.

This hotel has a very rich owner. I do not know his reasons why he does not invest only a little part of his huge money for this hotel.

It’s been a couple years since I was there so I can’t say for sure, but I think it’s probably still there. If they did tear it down it would most likely mean that something new would be built in its place.
