I’m sure it’ll come some day, but given your extensive knowledge of Greco-Roman connections, I would love a video on the full history of the Greeks this way, from the beginnings all the way to the conquest by Rome. The period post-Alexander’s death and pre-Roman conquest of Macedonia and the rest of Greece has always fascinated me.

I'd suggest you add either subtitles or just write on screen the names and some of the eventes you're talking about to add a visual guide as to what you are talking about. Why do all the documentaries about Rome so heavily focus on military and warfare? I think this undermindes the importance of Rome in terms of culture, religion, architecture and social structure
If you think of their engineering feats. all without electric. sewers. crowned roads hot and cold running water. the drinking fountains .pile drivers. strip mining public baths. hydrolic cement. and on and on.
Keep making these long documentaries. I look forward to them and learn more about history from you than I did in school. You make learning fun. Thank you ️
If 2nd video will end in 476 I hope this channel will at least do some justice to that year not actually being real end of the Roman state.Depends on if channel decide to follow still currently dominantly used labels and concepts or if it would admit that entire "Byzantine" empire concept and terminology is hugely imperfect and badly manipulative.Even many modern scholars dislike(artificially fabricated!) Byzantine concept from these reasons.
you seem to like history a lot. very nice video btw. however, if you want to be historically accurate and avoid falling into the discredited, ahistorical notion that the empire ended in 476, then the you must know that the empire actually fell in 1453 with the fall of the 'new rome' i.e constantnople. an interesting fact you might enjoy is that modern day greeks also refer to themselves as 'romios;' 'ρωμιός', while all the people of the levante, arabs, turks, persians etc call the citizens occupying the lands of what later (medieval era) became know as byzantium, which in reality is the eastern Roman empire, "rum". just some points worth considering. p.s the germanic conquerors of rome proper wanted to appropriate the title of rome for themselves to gain historical legitimacy and be seen as legitimate heirs, and thus attempted to discredit the eastern roman empire by dubbing it byzantium. if you would have asked what people living in the eastern part of southern europe and north africa thought they were, the would definitely have responded without hesitation romans citizens. @@Fireoflearning
I hope there's a part four to 1806 and a part five to 1917. As to pronunciation, it seems the Classical pronunciation is more widespread for people talking about ancient Rome which is appropriate for your video whereas the Ecclesiastical pronunciation with regional inflections is more favored for Latin in legal, scholastic, medieval, and obviously, church contexts. An example of this is "certiorari" where the classicist might say "kair tee or are ee" and the ecclesiastical use would be "chair tsee or are ee" whereas the typical modern use is "sher see or are ee"

Joel....I studied the history of Rome as a young teenager. Since we are Latins, we have an innate knowledge of our history through language and even coinage. It is in our GENS. Also note writer Philip K Dick's quote : "The Empire Never Ended". Knowing this, we are leaps and bound above the "average murican" . *~:)

Have you ever listened to Mike Duncan's The History of Rome podcast? This video was great but Mike Duncan's HoR section covering just the 7 kings and republic is over 16 hours long and goes into much more depth then this video. Fire of Learning crammed as much as he could into one hour but Duncan doesn't have any time restraints so you get 16x the info covering the exact same period of time. However Fire of learning has gave us some visuals to go with the history while if your lucky you get one static map from Duncan. If you enjoyed this you will also enjoy Mike Duncan's HoR and his podcast is available on RUclips from uploader of his podcast. I've probably listened to Duncan's podcast of Rome 20x's as I play it every night when I go to bed. Give it a listen.
On a warm summer night, sitting outside at small family restaurant, in the outskirts of Rome, eating the best pasta carbonara I've every had, in full view on long stretch of Roman aqueduct still standing in 2018, was a memory I'll never forget. Rome in all its Imperial glory would have been during the reign of Trajan I believe. I would also go back to the reign of Augustus though, and get eaten alive by them no doubt

I think it's important to note that Caesar probably never saw any combat himself when inside the front lines. On some occasions he would dismount his horse, grab a sword and shield and encourage his men to push forward. But he never actually fought enemies himself.

I hadn't considered the Indo-Europeans, but that is a good idea. I've done a short video on the Anglo-Zulu war, but I do plan to do one on South Africa and those other nations soon as well

The total podcast covers from Romulus to the final Emperor coincidently named Romulus. It's total running time is over 40 hours and I loved every minute of it. I listen to it every night when I go to bed so I've probably heard it 20 times. If you don't want to download a podcast their are reuploads that have put it on RUclips. That's actually my preferred listening method as you are given a map and no ads.

Hey fire of learning, could you please do a video on the development on the Spanish colonies in early Latin America and what life was like as an average mestizo or Spaniard living in South America during the 1600s and 1700s, how the class system worked back then and how often people from different races inter-marry each other. It’s a part of history I’m extremely interested in but never gets talked about much for some reason.
I love your history videos and I'm still awaiting for your Ancient Egypt documentary videos as Roman (including Byzantine Empire) and Egyptian history is my favorite.
9:25 - I'm a little surprised that you didn't mention the ransom of the city and the "vae victis" incident. To my understanding, this had a profound impact/trauma on the Roman zeitgeist that lasted indefinitely.
Idk why but I always feel a sense of bittersweetness or melancholy or something like that when I think of Rome. I wish it survived all the way to the modern day.
The way Rome fought itself but still managed to conquer a large segment of their known world is impressive. Imagine what Rome could have achieved if they didn't fought amongst themselves?
Rome strikes me as a people from Star Wars, specifically the Mandolorians in the Old Republic. They believe conflict is a way to enrich themselves both culturally and spiritually. They are fiercely independent and believe that internal conflicts need to be resolved quickly to avoid any outside influence. Rome is for Rome and only the strongest will serve her best. It's also a way of culling the weak and undesirables from the population. At least during the High Republic and Imperial Republic Eras of Rome. However victory weakened Rome overtime and they did not retain the drive they once had and instead of internal conflicts to serve the State, they were toward the later end, geared toward personal ambition.
People of the world should admire and following Rome with one trait: They never give up. They could be almost totally destroyed, but through toughness, and diligently gather themselves together and put up a fight again, and won.
I use this documentary for my studies in college, otherwise rathet nicely done, missing some things like for example it's a shame you didn't mention the Illiryan revolt of 6-9AD, and even fail to go a little more into detail when rome first step on the east adriatic coast... but for a common person and even for someone studying history, a useful source. Thanks :D
@ 38:50 you mention the Gauls fighting naked. From my understanding one of the main reasons for this is that during combat they didn't want clothing/armor to get in the way and restrict mobility. A good modern example would be mma fighters. This makes even more sense considering the fact that the Gauls prided themselves in single combat, and this was reflected in battle. Where the legions focused on unity, cohesion, and cooperation of the unit, the Galic warrior during a battle sought 1v1 single combat with an oppenant and personal glory. Another thing probably worth mentioning, although more of a factor with the Britons/Celts is the fact that the religious leaders would apply war paint that was thought to magically protect the wearer. In this mindset the war paint was thought to be more powerful and protective than mere human made armor that would just restrict mobility and get in the way. In short many gauls, Germans, and Celts, did apparently fight either completely naked (with neck torques being their status symbol) or wore very little clothing (maybe just pants and or a shirt) to retain their flexibility and mobility.
Now that you have done the Roman Empire, can you do a video on Italy since then? I think it is equally interesting, especially the many dialectic adjustments to nationalized Florentine Italian, as well as the struggle for unification even though the country remains divided north and south culturally, ethnically, sociologically etc. Grazie.

you seem to like history a lot. very nice video btw. however, if you want to be historically accurate and avoid falling into the discredited, ahistorical notion that the empire ended in 476, then the you must know that the empire actually fell in 1453 with the fall of the 'new rome' i.e constantnople. an interesting fact you might enjoy is that modern day greeks also refer to themselves as 'romios;' 'ρωμιός', while all the people of the levante, arabs, turks, persians etc call the citizens occupying the lands of what later (medieval era) became know as byzantium, which in reality is the eastern Roman empire, "rum". just some points worth considering. p.s the germanic conquerors of rome proper wanted to appropriate the title of rome for themselves to gain historical legitimacy and be seen as legitimate heirs, and thus attempted to discredit the eastern roman empire by dubbing it byzantium. if you would have asked what people living in the eastern part of southern europe and north africa thought they were, the would definitely have responded without hesitation romans citizens. @@Fireoflearning
I hope there's a part four to 1806 and a part five to 1917. As to pronunciation, it seems the Classical pronunciation is more widespread for people talking about ancient Rome which is appropriate for your video whereas the Ecclesiastical pronunciation with regional inflections is more favored for Latin in legal, scholastic, medieval, and obviously, church contexts. An example of this is "certiorari" where the classicist might say "kair tee or are ee" and the ecclesiastical use would be "chair tsee or are ee" whereas the typical modern use is "sher see or are ee"

Joel....I studied the history of Rome as a young teenager. Since we are Latins, we have an innate knowledge of our history through language and even coinage. It is in our GENS. Also note writer Philip K Dick's quote : "The Empire Never Ended". Knowing this, we are leaps and bound above the "average murican" . *~:)

Have you ever listened to Mike Duncan's The History of Rome podcast? This video was great but Mike Duncan's HoR section covering just the 7 kings and republic is over 16 hours long and goes into much more depth then this video. Fire of Learning crammed as much as he could into one hour but Duncan doesn't have any time restraints so you get 16x the info covering the exact same period of time. However Fire of learning has gave us some visuals to go with the history while if your lucky you get one static map from Duncan. If you enjoyed this you will also enjoy Mike Duncan's HoR and his podcast is available on RUclips from uploader of his podcast. I've probably listened to Duncan's podcast of Rome 20x's as I play it every night when I go to bed. Give it a listen.

On a warm summer night, sitting outside at small family restaurant, in the outskirts of Rome, eating the best pasta carbonara I've every had, in full view on long stretch of Roman aqueduct still standing in 2018, was a memory I'll never forget. If there was any time period that I could travel to it would be in the time of Augustus, to see Rome in all it's Imperial glory would be euphoric.

I think it's important to note that Caesar probably never saw any combat himself when inside the front lines. On some occasions he would dismount his horse, grab a sword and shield and encourage his men to push forward. But he never actually fought enemies himself.

I hadn't considered the Indo-Europeans, but that is a good idea. I've done a short video on the Anglo-Zulu war, but I do plan to do one on South Africa and those other nations soon as well

The total podcast covers from Romulus to the final Emperor coincidently named Romulus. It's total running time is over 40 hours and I loved every minute of it. I listen to it every night when I go to bed so I've probably heard it 20 times. If you don't want to download a podcast their are reuploads that have put it on RUclips. That's actually my preferred listening method as you are given a map and no ads.

Hey fire of learning, could you please do a video on the development on the Spanish colonies in early Latin America and what life was like as an average mestizo or Spaniard living in South America during the 1600s and 1700s, how the class system worked back then and how often people from different races inter-marry each other.
It’s a part of history I’m extremely interested in but never gets talked about much for some reason.
I love your history videos and I'm still awaiting for your Ancient Egypt documentary videos as Roman (including Byzantine Empire) and Egyptian history is my favorite.

9:25 - I'm a little surprised that you didn't mention the ransom of the city and the "vae victis" incident. To my understanding, this had a profound impact/trauma on the Roman zeitgeist that lasted indefinitely.

The way Rome fought itself but still managed to conquer a large segment of their known world is impressive.
Imagine what Rome could have achieved if they didn't fought amongst themselves?
Rome would have been unstoppable if they hadn't been fighting each other. It might have expanded far beyond the territorial expanse of 117 AD.
Rome strikes me as a people from Star Wars, specifically the Mandolorians in the Old Republic. They believe conflict is a way to enrich themselves both culturally and spiritually. They are fiercely independent and believe that internal conflicts need to be resolved quickly to avoid any outside influence. Rome is for Rome and only the strongest will serve her best. It's also a way of culling the weak and undesirables from the population.
At least during the High Republic and Imperial Republic Eras of Rome. However victory weakened Rome overtime and they did not retain the drive they once had and instead of internal conflicts to serve the State, they were toward the later end, geared toward personal ambition.

None. For one country to conquer another = total destruction
People of the world should admire and following Rome with one trait: They never give up. They could be almost totally destroyed, but through toughness, and diligently gather themselves together and put up a fight again, and won.
I use this documentary for my studies in college, otherwise rathet nicely done, missing some things like for example it's a shame you didn't mention the Illiryan revolt of 6-9AD, and even fail to go a little more into detail when rome first step on the east adriatic coast... but for a common person and even for someone studying history, a useful source. Thanks :D

War between Rome and Carthage was just amazing and epic.
@ 38:50 you mention the Gauls fighting naked. From my understanding one of the main reasons for this is that during combat they didn't want clothing/armor to get in the way and restrict mobility. A good modern example would be mma fighters.
This makes even more sense considering the fact that the Gauls prided themselves in single combat, and this was reflected in battle. Where the legions focused on unity, cohesion, and cooperation of the unit, the Galic warrior during a battle sought 1v1 single combat with an oppenant and personal glory.
Another thing probably worth mentioning, although more of a factor with the Britons/Celts is the fact that the religious leaders would apply war paint that was thought to magically protect the wearer. In this mindset the war paint was thought to be more powerful and protective than mere human made armor that would just restrict mobility and get in the way.
In short many gauls, Germans, and Celts, did apparently fight either completely naked (with neck torques being their status symbol) or wore very little clothing (maybe just pants and or a shirt) to retain their flexibility and mobility.
Sooo many catastrophic defeats yet they still survived for a long time
