I always had a soft spot for these adverts they were just so simple and charming to watch they also gave a relatable home feeling to me it was genuinely like watching a sitcom series and I genuinely never knew that the monkey puppet was created by the Jim Henson company nor the fact that monkey used to be owned by a completely different company
Completely agree, I think everyone loved and related to the ads due to their simplicity. Admittedly, I was also unaware of these details prior to my research!
i remember the monkey adverts i was shocked i saw him again with al after itv digital closed down i also remember more iconic mascots such as church hill and national accident helpline underdog (who was short lived in the ads)
I'm a Australian, I discover the PG Tips ads from the compilation video on youtube (Creature Comfort) till the Monkey and Al ads and I was hook, they so cozy, brings me joy to my face, since then I can't stop watching the compilations as I was trying out the PG tips and now I prefer that tea compare to other black teas I tasted. Watching this now, makes want to go back watching the completions of them.
Watching videos like these always bring back memories of some of the other promotions companies had in the past, like the Kingsmill Wallace and Gromit breakfast set and the Birds Eye polar bear plush. Good times.
I remember the PG Tips monkey in 2007 (which I was 9 years old at the time) and I was a big fan of the character along with Jamster's Crazy Frog (AKA The Annoying Thing).
I remember when they ran one of the promotions for a free monkeh, I begged my parents for my own box of teabags. Not only did that start my cuppa every morning trend but I still have the plush. And many of the others they released.
Absolutely loved the dynamic between these two in the ads. I heard something recently in an interview with Chris Moyles that the reason Vegas stopped doing the ads was due to a PR idea that he refused to do. Something involving him driving a teacup around the country giving away PG Tips. To quote Johnny in the interview "a man has to draw a line in the tea leaves"
I'm really happy they replaced the live acting animals with the monkey puppet, honestly his character was a lot more entertaining. It's just a shame those primates had to be treated like that for so long.
Ngl I binged watched all these ads, straight after watching all the old Tango ads. (Very funny, and very weird...) A month ago. But I always remember watching ITV, BBC back in the day and seeing these ads come on and even after they finished they were always, stuck in my head, I qouted them constantly and rewatched them on RUclips religiously, as they were funny and heart warming to watch. I always used to imagine that after those ads came on, I'd get a knock at the door of the two of them asking to come in for a brew!
Wow great video mate, brought back so many memories - I remember being a kid and drinking like 5 cups of tea a day to finish the box so that my parents could buy the promotional pack with the free monkeh
Really enjoyed the clip! Thank you very much! Personally, I felt that the flavour of their tea just changed dramatically all of a sudden over the past few months, no longer as tasty as before. That to me was more traumatised than seeing Al and Monkey bowing out.
Jim Henson? Aardman? And the Gromit mug! Throw in Doctor who and nintendo and this is just a big pot of SomeBoiOnline's channel lol As a guy from the US I have never seen these ads but I might just have to take the dive they seem really charming
I know right? Coincidentally, Tom Baker (Dr Who) narrates the Gromit Mug ad, so there's a connection. 😅 But charming is definitely the word - the strange British quirks might even make it more entertaining for you!
That's brilliant to hear, I think there should be some Monkeys on ebay for a decent price, obviously might have some import charges. As for PG Tips tea itself I'm not sure...
I’m glad RUclips recommend me this video. I never knew who monkey was but after watching it, I’m gonna start watching the adverts that are online. Thank you for making this. I’m gonna have to show my friends this video.
i remember my head teacher had a key ring of monkey and i instantly knew he was the monke from PG tips one of my most fondest memories of tea is when that christmas ad came on while i sat cuddling my gromit plush
I have a story regarding the suction cup variant of Monkey I used to own. My dad and I used to travel to the US a lot and whenever we did we'd hire a rental car, so we made a habit of bringing our Monkey on holiday with us and sticking him on the back. One year, for some peculiar reason, we couldn't get him off. PG must have used some industrial grade suction cups because he was completely stuck to the window, we tried everything we could to free him but to no avail. In the end we had no choice but to abandon him. Part of me hopes that he's still out there stuck in place, travelling around Florida, occasionally making some British tourist's day when they see him.
This video has made my year 🐒 💚 Been in love with Monkey and Al since I was wee, and getting to relive it all was such a cosy nostalgia journey! I was so desperate for the ITV Digital Monkey Plush when they were released, but my parents would never let me get one (not even from the gadget shop), so when they released the little PG Tips Monkies I lost my tiny mind 🤯🎉 safe to say I still have them all hahaha! Thanks for another brilliant video, and let's bring back Monkey and Al!!
I think the PG Tips ads are amazing and fun to watch. When It comes to funny British mascots that I know of PG Tips Monkey and Al commercials and mascot wise are amazing and great to see come up. Cool video. ^_^
I enjoy this video i keep watching this video over and over. Pgtips. I still got my pgtips monkey plush i remember when my mum bought ITV digital good times man and i have red nose money and 2 little monkey. Pgtips and tetile are great tea brands .
"It is all too easy to shake one's head at the state of Modern Britain." Ironically, that statement would go on to become true for the state of PG Tips themselves.
I don't think Johnny Vegas was too pleased about being written out. He appeared on 8 Out Of 10 Cats with a character called "Baboon" (for very obviously legal reasons, as he pointed out). It's a shame. I think that if PG Tips are not using the character anymore, then Comic Relief could maybe have a sitcom with Monkey and Al.
I like to think Johnny Vegas got sick of people coming up to him in the street and saying "munkeh" at him in a bad impression of his own voice, and that's why he left...
It's certainly possible that he didn't want to be solely associated with that character. I've seen him joke about it on chat shows - but I think he's aware it's what he's most known for regardless.
I remember seeing the advertisement with the Monkey on the truck, and that used to scare me as a kid, because he was screaming, so when it happened in Toy Story 3 I was like “nah that’s so dark”
We Need A Movie With Monkey And Al. It Would Be Basically Even Longer Than A Tale Of Two Continents, And Have An Epic Storyline Of Al And Monkey Finally Reuniting After All This Years!
i used to LOVE monkey so much as a kid and had three of the plushes they did including a smaller one with suction cups on the hands which id stick on my nans car window during journeys with her. i was always a sucker for puppets with that sock puppet type mouth so he was perfect for me and he became my main association with tea and still is honestly
As far as i remember the so-called ''Monkeh!'' i never knew he was created by the people at The Jim Henson Company up until now, i thought he was made by some kind of a random company who were interested of designing puppets.
I have a Tale of Two Continents teatowl they gave away with the tea bags at the time. Though my fave PG Tips toys were the dinosaurs included with packs of tea bags back in 93 to tie in with Jurassic Park.
I remember when I was little I really wanted a Monkey plush, my best friend had one and my Brother had one but for some reason I was never brought one. He was a huge fad in my class at primary school (I don't know if it was school wide or just everyone in my class) I ended up making my own Monkey out of socks. Once my Brother got older and started getting rid of toys he gave me Monkey. Then a few years ago my friend gave me her's as a Christmas present. Now I have two Monkeys and I couldn't be happier
OMG OMG OMG! I have seen this and watch this video on RUclips and it was awesome! I love the PG Tips monkey and its history! I'm not British but I enjoyed this video! I think monkeys make such great animals! I love how Al talked like Shrek when he said monkey! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love the pg tips monkey & the PG tips tea. Yes it's fantastic tasting tea. However recently I've switched to Yorkshire tea. As an american I love british tea. Oh I love Cuban coffee also. Cheers from Tucson Arizona USA 🇺🇸 6:56

Unfortunately it's quite the contrary, they've announced a complete rebrand, along with the retirement of Monkey and even their pyramid teabags 😔 The new ad campaign feels woefully uninspired.
@@SomeBoiOnline I've just seen the new advert and I have never felt more disappointed about an advert. Watching an emotionless person talking (not even about tea mind you) is a far cry from the legendary duo. My hopes were high from seeing Munkeh in online promo pictures for the 'Tea fit for a king' campaign, meaning that PG still has the rights to the character, coupled with the fact that Nigel Plaskitt (one of Monkeys puppeteers) alluded that "Monkey may appear again" as a response to an email I sent him had made me really hopeful. Now though, I am not excited for any PG tips content in the future.
Ahhh, time to settle in and enjoy this. Keep up the good work, man!
Thank you, hope you can relax and enjoy! ☕️
@@SomeBoiOnline I certainly did, looking forward to whatever you have planned! I don’t know why, but this type of content just hits the spot for me.
settle in and drink me pg tea inside my gromit mug
Not going to lie, getting a monkey with your tea was on the same level as a gromit mug.
Might have to agree with you there, I always loved that it was the *actual* Monkey from the ads as a kid - albeit in a smaller scale.
I sooo agree with I wish me and my family drink the tea around the time theses toys where sold around time

im American and didn't even know this dude existed until today, but that monkey is one of the cutest mascots ever created

I’m really sick, had mock exams today and come home depressed until watching i saw this vid. Genuinely made my day, thank you SBO 👍
It's likewise made mine hearing that 😊 Probably doesn't seem like it now, but it'll all be worthwhile eventually - keep at it!

Indeed, simpler times.

Something involving him driving a teacup around the country giving away PG Tips. To quote Johnny in the interview "a man has to draw a line in the tea leaves"
I've just found this out myself only recently! Classic Johnny Vegas, it's a pretty apt way for him to go I think 😂 Glad he stood his ground.
I'm really happy they replaced the live acting animals with the monkey puppet, honestly his character was a lot more entertaining. It's just a shame those primates had to be treated like that for so long.
Yeah the ads definitely peaked in the early 2000's - though it's mad that the actual chimps were used for so long, shows how much times have changed.
