Maybe it’s a weird analogy but in the windsurfing community we say; “if your not falling in your not trying!” Maybe in van life “if your not shutting your thumb in the door your not trying!” Keep on with your brilliant efforts. I’m convinced you can get your new van liveable in the time you have. All you need is a bed, water and the ability to feed yourself for now. Everything else will follow in time. You have the whole summer to figure things out. X
I slammed the sliding door of my Doblo onto my finger a few weeks ago so I feel your pain! I tried to brave it out with some salt water, Germolene and plasters but it was still bleeding 5 hours later so I ended up at A&E for stitches. I'm part intrigued, part scared at what is going to happen as the black bit of nail grows down!
Hi Kiki, you make me smile. New van is looking good, try to keep the weight down, in the short term you only Need bed, water & cooking! At least you did not have to drill your thumb nail! That's a fun job to do! 😂 Take care and stay safe x
Thanks Steve, keeping weight down is an interesting one - was on my mind until I looked at the weight of the battery I've ordered and then I figured a couple of extra kgs of wood wouldn't make much of a difference 🤣 very grateful I didn't have to drill my thumb nail 😬😱
Great vid Kiki,it will all be worth the effort, and we're all enjoying watching your transformation of the living space👍🏼You look really excited and happy with this new project 😀And yes, there is real van envy out here, looks like a lovely chariot👏
Progress looking good, poor thumb. Sometimes i dread watching your videos as it sets the tinkering ideas part of brain into overdrive. You mentioned about changing and drying your wetsuit, idea is use any leftover batten or get some Ali tube, open rear doors to 90°,hook 2/3 lengths batten over top to secure, get a pvc or fabric (dd camping ideal) tarp to make 'tent', fasten with magnets. Make a duckboard. Plenty room to change and hang wetsuit from batten. If you don't get a side awning, you can reuse tarp and magnets, make a frame so you can use it over either side door. phew.
Please don't dread it, I love your ideas! I made a tarp for over the back doors the other day from the leftover shower curtain from making the ones for the back of Silva and held it in place with magnets - need to sew them in so I can pop it up and down quickly but did the job when I needed to work on the back of the van in the rain! Might make something more extensive in time, once all the other essential stuff is done 😁 and duckboard is totally the thing I was thinking about the other day (spoiler for the next vid there) and couldn't remember the name off 🤣 see your brain is helpful!
@@SilvaontheRoad oh good then ☺. Never thought about shower curtain, inspired, yet it's not that removed from a DD camping tarp. You could refine the idea by making a folding frame to fit over the rear doors, be a bit more sturdy and if done right make some detachable legs so you could reuse it over the side doors. Like you said some time ago, make everything dual purpose and saves space.
Blimey, I see what you mean about the B&Q timber not being straight! I will be laying the floor in my Doblo next month so I will be sure to go to a proper woodyard instead. I'm going to borrow your idea of not sticking the batons until you have the plywood to put over to hold it, that is genius, I don't think I have enough heavy things otherwise but I can put a bit of furniture over most of it. What width were your batons, are they 2" x 2"?
Yeah, I've bought most of my stuff from elsewhere - Wickes and Travis Perkins both store timber flat so it stays that way, definitely wouldn't advise getting ply from B&Q they store everything upright hence it bending! I've used MGM for my bed supplies and it's good stuff 👍🏻 I think my floor batons were 25mm x 25mm - trying to minimize how much head room I lose!
I've done the floor this way so I can insulate under the ply and have a flat surface to lay vinyl down so I end up with an easy to clean floor. I haven't suggested it's superior to any other way of doing things! I'm not sure what 'original vanlife' is, I'm just doing the best option for me.
@@SilvaontheRoad for me the isolation is enough with reflectix then carpet underlay then carpet ( bare feet luxury) but now everyone’s going for fake wood. Respect your decision although everyone does that .Its like the trend of having no carpets in houses. Some people worry to much about insulation in such a small area
That's great that it works for you 👍🏻 we all have different needs from our homes. I've never been a fan of carpets in my flats or my vans, and I don't have a hoover so the advantage of the vinyl floor is I can just sweep it out with a brush and easily mop up anything I spill (which I do a lot 🤣)

I like this analogy 😂 Thanks Jo 💕
Have you put arnica on your thumb - that stuff is magic! Bruises gone in a day. Really enjoying your van build - and well done. It’s not an easy job.
Thanks Ruth - I'd totally forgotten about arnica but I've now dug it out of the chaos of stuff that came out of Silva 😂
Maybe Silva is upset that you have a new van Kiki. But the build is looking great so far
That was my immediate thought!!
It did cross my mind too 😂

Eeeeeek... That sounds a lot worse than mine! Kinda relieved I'm not alone in slamming doors on thumbs though ☺️ Hope yours heals well 🤞🏻

Thanks 😁 I am definitely excited between the tiredness 🤣

Thanks Geoff 😁
That van is gonna be sweet!
Thanks!! Can't wait to get out and about in my new home 😁
Great progress 😎
Thanks 😁
great progress, what lay out will you doing?
Stay tuned and you'll find out!! 😁😂
getting there.
Yeah, slowly but surely ☺️

Thanks Nick 😁
Why do you make such work for yourself .Carpet underlay then carpet ? So Tell me How wood and glueing is far superior and original “Vanlife “ ?
