Your interpretation is spot on. BTS' lyrics are always about the human experience and all facets of it. That's why their fans connect with them so closely. This particular song is off their Map of the Soul album series which explores concepts of psychology. They are also the most captivating live performers. The performances of Black Swan were stunningly beautiful.
You'll be surprised at the age range within the fandom. I'm 61 and was raised on classic rock. These guys are just amazing. The depth and breadth of their discography is impressive. Their music videos are what the early 80's wanted to be. Just remember that even their songs that appear to be love songs are 99% of the time much deeper. There are explanation videos that bring the cultural references int - highly recommend them, to.. New subscriber!
You are right, it's their fear of losing what they used to love which is creating music. They came from very very humble background most people don't know, in this particular album they talked about how they were so scared of how big they got, how fame shackled them, the stigma & responsibility.
This was about their real fear the fear of losing the love of their art eg Song writing, Composing, Producing, Rapping, Singing and Dancing. It's based on the quote by the famous Dancer Martha Graham 'A Dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing and this is the most painful death. It's part of the Map of Soul album series were they explore Jungian Psychology concepts of 'Persona', 'Shadow' and 'Ego' this reference's the 'Shadow'. hence the Dancing Shadow's throughout the MV. For BTS it was areal fear when they were going through a hard time both due to the rise in fame, the hatred that followed them, the pressure of not having space to take time off, over working continually.
BTS tends to portray ideas and thoughts very well in their songs or videos. The complexity of most of his compositions beautifully expresses his creative and artistic choices. To do this, they use various devices and symbols, linking literary, psychological and social references. Repeating words is a deliberate literary device that puts emphasis on something and is called Epizeuxis. In this case, "bump, bump, bump" is the sound of the heartbeat and conveys the heightened sensation of anxiety; and, "jump, jump, jump" deepens the feeling of depression and dark thoughts, adding layers of complexity to the lyrics. In the case of "nah, nah, nah" and "yeah, yeah, yeah" the repetition makes the song accessible to BTS's multinational and multilingual audience where fans from diverse backgrounds can easily sing along, creating a sense of unity and connection. . “Black Swan” is inspired by the psychological theories of Carl Jung and explores the concept of “Shadow” which addresses the darkest things that exist in all of us and that we hide or repress, for example, our fears and doubts or our prejudices. It is based on the following quote from dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, “a dancer dies twice - once when she stops dancing, and this first death is the most painful”. That's why it's relatable to Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, "Swan Lake", where there's a character called Black Swan. This song has an essentially deep and personal meaning for BTS, as it refers to the fear of losing their passion for music. The video portrays the fight between light and darkness, with beautiful visuals, powerful choreography and emotional vocals, adding depth to the narrative and representing the artists' internal conflicts and emotions. But the lyrics end with the hope that they will fight this feeling by looking deeper into themselves, understanding their feelings, knowing themselves better, and using those feelings as inspiration to make more music. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you for watching and adding information. I'm sure the song relates to so many people. At some point, most people struggle at least a little with their inner voices and the pressures of life. 🙂
i clicked the subscribe button. BTS Army ( thats the name of their fandom) here. we have people from all ages, genders , economic means , super educated and above all else generous and dedicated. BTS work hard so the fandom works hard. not only do we support BTS but since BTS are Philanthropists and are big on giving back, their fan bases also give to many charities and help each other as well. i wont say there arent some rotten apples because those exist in every barrel. but for the most part we are welcoming and lovely. its ok to pause, to talk we dont mind it shows interest and that you are paying attention. also long videos we dont mind either. again it shows actually interest and not just clicks. you will def find many things you love with this groupd if you listen without prejudice. they have a sound for everyone
I enjoy your reactions to BTS. I am also “of a certain age,” and I think BTS is one of the best musical acts of my lifetime. I love them as people, I love the variety in their music genres, and I adore the fact that their lyrics are almost always deep and demand thought and reflection - often self-reflection. They have challenged me in a lot of ways, and I am better for it.
Hello, sir! Wow, you were spot on with the interpretation. This song is strongly associated with Martha Graham's quote "a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful". This song is about a time of burnout for the band, as they are heavily involved in the writing/production of their music. They discussed many of the reasons with their fans, repeatd times, and reassurred us they were doing their best to get better. They always try to be honest about what is going on and when they can they share it with us. This song was supposed to be on one of the triology albums based on Jungian Psychology (Map Of The Soul : Persona, Shadow, Ego) but things happened the project become a duology MOTS Persona Map Of The Soul:7 on which Black Swan is and like 20 other songs 😂 Next song i recommend is ON Kinetic Manifesto, it's on the same album and i personally consider it a response to Black Swan. Please don't forget to turn on Closed Captions!💜
“Black Swan” focuses on the fear of losing your love for music. All of these fears, pressures, and doubts manifest in the shadows heard and seen in “Black Swan.” In the music video, Jimin dances alone, succumbing to shadows. He is the black swan, who agonizes. And there is a parallel between the ballerina who can no longer dance and the musician who loses inspiration. Black Swan is a song inspired by the Martha Graham quote: “A dancer dies twice; The first death is when you stop dancing, and that death is infinitely more painful.” BTS took this and applied it to the moment when an artist's inspiration leaves them, when they may no longer feel love and passion for their music. The industry can put a lot of pressure on the artist. The "creator" BTS's Bang Si-hyuk has always given them a lot of freedom to live their art, but fame brings a lot of pressure, from the company, fans, the media, etc. Fear that making music means no longer living art in a true way.
With "Black Swan," BTS divulge their most harrowing shadow yet, one that any person who lives for making art faces: losing the passion for creating. "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." Martha Graham. This quote is at the root of the sentiments inlaid in "Black Swan." Much like a dancer feels purposeless when they can no longer express themselves through dance, BTS contends that the day that music no longer fills them with the same passionate fire as before, or even if there came a day when they stopped creating music - what they feel is their life's purpose - it would feel like death. RM sings, "If this can no longer resonate / No longer make my heart vibrate / Then this may be how I die my first death." Once again, BTS affirm that despite their countless record-breaking accolades, the wealth they've amassed, and their ever-increasing fame, they are artists. What means most to them is the art - music, visuals, dances - that they create. 💜 HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY
I think you might have the wrong interpretation of what BTS' fandom looks like but it's all good. ARMYs are every age, from every country, every creed, every race, every gender. We're a very diverse group of people. Nice reaction btw. 💜
Thank you; however, there were no credits on this video. I just checked again and the next step was advertising. I'll keep that in mind for future videos, however. 🙂
It's just a tip for the future. A lot of first time to BTS reactors miss the endings which can be very meaningful, especially in the BU videos. Good reaction, keep going!
Just to provide a bit of extra background, I’ll mention that they began exploring Jungian psychology in their work as early as 2016 (the album Wings is a masterpiece largely inspired by the themes of the Hesse novel ‘Demian’, itself heavily influenced by Jung and Nietzsche). It’s their way of making sense of the world, their place in it and their personal development as people and artists. Their music has been personal from the beginning. The later Black Swan is what we would call a Shadow song, where they’re expressing the darker, troubled side of the artist’s psyche. The vocals were deliberately compressed to bring their distinctive individual voices closer together, as they’re essentially playing a singular character, the Artist. The duality is reflected in the costume switches, where they begin on stage in white with touches of black, their performing persona, while offstage they are in black and subject to the shadow. By the end, the shadow has fully invaded the stage persona… but even then there is hope. In the closing scene, Jungkook sees but turns away from the shadow as it shrinks. I won’t go through all the lyrics but I will mention the way they use the metaphor of the ocean, a recurrent motif in their songs and an example of the depth of what might seem like straightforward lines. BTS live to perform and in their concerts they swim in an ocean of coloured light provided by the audience and the lightsticks they hold (you’ll see if you watch any of the intro videos). In kpop there is a horrible rare phenomenon called a ‘black ocean’, where the audience will switch off their lightsticks to express disapproval. In Black Swan, BTS use this image to represent their fear of losing their audience and the buoyancy they provide, sinking into darkness and mud that drags on their dancing feet. The sequel to Black Swan is the anthemic ON, in which they accept the shadow and declare their intention to go forward, to go ON.
Hi Mark! Thank you very much for all the added information. It's very interesting. Of course Jung and Nietzsche are also interesting but sometimes quite problematic in their ideas, but extracting what works for one's own discoveries and journey can be very useful. The shadow imagery makes perfect sense to me. In the preface to my second volume of short stories (My Apologies - A Troubled Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste) I wrote: "Over the years, I have learned to befriend most of the characters that roam around the synapses of my mind - innumerable though they are, and often recalcitrant. At the time of writing, this was not always the case. Now I wouldn't, and possibly couldn't, live without their devious agendas, constant feuding, and preposterous interpretations." [Note: most of the stories were written in the 1970s and 80s - not published until 2020s] Have a great day! 🙂
Really enjoy your BTS reactions. I'm glad you have on subtitles & always pause for a sec at the end, as just when you think BTS videos are over they're not. And some link to others. I am sooo glad that my daughter had me listen to them early in 2020. I am happy that their fans (called A.R.M.Y, whom they dearly love), are all ages. They have hundreds of songs, keep going please. Thank you.
