Proud to be an 8th cousin descendant of Benjamin Leroy Holt the man who developed the Caterpillar tractor in 1904

Sure been nice to have been born when simple innovation could be achieved without government interference. That's what allowed men like Holt to succeed and why very few since his era have.

From this video, Benjamin Holt was a very resourceful and innovative man. He was a mechanical engineer in the truest sense of the word. A hard worker and a big achiever. He accomplished all that without the necessity of high education. Caterpillar certainly has a very rich and positive history.

The Museum of Agriculture in Woodland, California has a lot of Holt, Best and Ford tractors on display. It's worth stopping if you're in the area.

Holt didn't call it Caterpillar, a news reporter said it looked like a caterpillar crawling along the ground. And the headlines read that exactly

The tracks were made of wood, so I’m not super confident about its longevity…

In 1877, the inventor made "car" on caterpillar to a course, a reminding railway car with a wooden body. «Infinite rails» car represented the closed iron tapes consisting of separate links. The car had 4 basic wheels and four leading asterisks. It was actuated by horse draft and, in essence, represented the caterpillar trailer. In 1878 the petition was submitted to Department of trade and manufactories about delivery to V.Blinov of "privellegiya" (patent) which was given out in September 20 1879

With 1881 Pancakes begins "self-feed" construction on caterpillar to a course which was constructed in 7 years, in 1888. It had the device as a car in which the steam-engine in capacity of 12 hp was established. Thus the car gathered speed of 3 versts at an o'clock (3,2 km/h). Blinov "self-feed" was exposed at Russian industrial exhibitions, in 1889 it was shown in work at an agricultural exhibition in Saratov, in 1896 - at the Nizhny Novgorod fair.

The two companies had created a patent swarm. The litigation was draining money from both. Several investors helped (or forced) Holt and Best to negotiate the merger.
