Notice that Johnny's reasons for abstaining from murder are limited to 'it's a crime', and 'I'd get caught'. Good to know where his head's at.
+YouKnowTheToff ¯\_(ツ)_/ ¯
God the music and sound design in Sunless Sea IS SO FUCKING GOOD! The Wolfstack Docks theme especially. And its not just the theme itself, its the situations in which you hear it.
You make it back after a grueling journey across the Zee, low of fuel, barely any supplies, with very few crew. And then you hear it. That damn theme. And you know you did it. You survived another journey. You made it home.
Such a good fucking game. Cant wait for Sunless Skies!
I quite like Oceana Lonissima
You mixed up Salt and Stone. Stone is the one who takes the blood sacrifice.
Salt merely has a 50% or so chance of teleporting you to Kingeater's Castle. Which, when you're out of fuel, is an even worse fate.
+Jekadu oh, bums
Kingeater's Castle is what you call the office, I assume?
But at Kingeater’s castle you could get a teleport to London if you sacrifice a zee-story (random)
That was added later, as I recall.
Ryan Doyle to London or Irem
Black Rose from Hell? I think I've have gone with black garlic. Garlic is sometime called the "stinking rose." And black garlic is really funky and pungent.
+Miguel Cuervo argh that is a great shout
Brilliant idea! And why not throw in some rose petals too? They're used in tea so they can't be too hard to get hold of.
You could use petals from the actual plant Exile's Rose is based off, the Rhododendron. Only problem might be finding a suitable breed, Zzoup isn't really for human palates to begin with...
Overall this recipe isn't terribly ambitious.
I didn't know until now that there was such a thing as black garlic
And having just googled it, wow where did someone get the idea for that
Nothing is better than being home alone with a bunch of cash your parents left you so you don´t starve to death and then opening your sub box to see a new episode of video game recipes and knowing that you can mess up every inch of the kitchen because you´ll have several days to clean it afterwards... good times.
Eurogamer, news, reviews, let's plays and tear based soups.
Sounds like an actual Sunless Sea description.
Personally I'd have thought "Lament Onions" would be shallots, due to their teardrop shape...
Yeah, but insulting onions was hilarious
In Soviet Eurogamer, Chiodini makes onions cry.
1987 called, they want you to know that there's a no return policy on the Yakov Smirnoff jokes.
CCCPgamer?
You forgot to add irony.
I think the irony is that it tasted really good.
That's the ironic part.
João Lucas Fraga Johnny has more than enough of that, he puts it into everything he does.
Glad to see you used sea salt instead of your table salt there. Nice touch.
You made those onions depressed.
Flumberjack Jack they weren't sweating in that pot, they were crying
Erik Ghostwood and the crew 😂
Flumberjack Jack ayy
Only make Zzoup when you have something to cry about.
“Lament onions” might have been shallots, since they’re shaped like teardrops.
I'm glad to see I'm not alone in traveling the Unterzee! I have a few suggestions for making the zzoup a bit more... accurate?
You could have used the petals of a black rose (I suggest the Black Baccara variety). It would put a slightly floral/sweet note to the zzoup.
Also, for the hanged man's tears, you could use Lacryma Christi wine (Literally, Tears of Christ, who was hung on a cross).
I know I'm late to the party, but Chris staying in Lore and suggesting ingredients from hell is why I've come to love failbetter
Johnny insulting onions is probably the best thing in this series.
- Lament Onions (shallots seem nice)
-Chanterelle mushrooms
-Paprika
-A hangman's tear
-Dark rose (black garlic or rose water may be)
-pork stock
-Irony
I'm surprised you didn't add some of the bag of dried pork blood to the stock :) I recon it'd help with colour and add some thickness to the soup
Yay! I love it so much when Johnny likes a recipe. This one filled my heart a bit.
If anyone is wondering, the quest that Johnny mentions is the character arc plotline of the Bandaged Poissonnier, who discovers the exact ingredients of Zzoup some halfway through his arc.
It's never anything important, just a single paragraph in which he tells you these ingredients. The sheer amount and quality of writing this game has to offer still has me stumped and amazed, and this little tidbit is one of the many, many reasons why. I am both impressed and not surprised at all that it tastes good, considering the thought and effort that went into making this game. Will have to try making this myself someday!
Great vid Johnny, mad props for dedicating yourself to get tears in there!
You can also find the recipe in Fallen London, the browser game (specifically in the cave of the nadir). It's less exciting than Sunless Sea, but it's easier to take in the lore since everything is text based.
Think you could make Rubbery Lumps and/or Sugared Mushrooms from Fallen London?
Not to mention Prisoner's honey! 😀
Black truffles are very very hard to find and are a deep secret in many restaurants as to where they get them and last I heard they are $1000 per ounce so I would have been surprised and impressed if you found and used them in this recipe.
Bioware Geek you can get them for like $80 online. Expensive, but not crazy rare.
The music makes it the most mournful cooking show ever!
Taikaru go watch weeber cooks, that shit is sad
just seeing this title in my feed made me so excited :D Sunless Sea is my favorite game and it doesn't get nearly enough love
Exile's rose is described as an actual rose, with an undercurrent of brimstone. I'd recommend steeping rose petals in the pork stock until the color leeches out, removing them, and adding black salt for the sulfur. The result will be QUITE red. Rosewater and sulfur. Wonder if that tastes like madness.
This was the weirdest Chiodini's Kitchen I've seen so far. I never saw Johnny's tears being one of the ingredients.
Finally some payback for onions making us cry for centuries! . . . Still made me feel bad for them though. I wonder how it'd taste had you not insulted them so harshly.
Heads up to anyone watching, it's fine if it's for your own consumption, but it's generally not a good idea to serve other people food containing your bodily fluids. Some people get really upset over that sort of thing.
This might just be me, but out of all the bodily fluids someone could put in food, tears is probably the least offensive.
"Everyone who ever said they loved you was lying" was so cutting. Especially when delivered in such a bored, matter of fact way. Good effort haha
now we need some Mushroom Wine
whoa! canon ingredients, that is kind of good thing for the lore archive stuff out there, thanks.
i dind´t expected the taste.
In case anyones wondering you can find the recipe in game, it wasnt just made up for sunless seas, the nadir holds it, with an iron grip as it holds all secrets
Submergio Viol in the background and Zzoup.Sublime.Absolutely sublime.
For the tears, maybe using saline based eye drops might have been a better choice? They are sterile and are very similar to actual tears. Otherwise, another great dish from the legendary Chiodini. I bet your new wife really enjoys your cooking.
"salt, the cruelest of the zee-gods"
Storm just sort of looking over from where he's sitting. The drowned man couldn't possibly be angrier so there's no change there
I love the startled expression he got when he tried it.
That Vermintide shirt is awesome. Coincidentally, Creative Assembly just released the reveal trailer for the Skavens in Total War: Warhammer 2.
i was so excited to see this! Now i want to eat this while I play Fallen London and Sunless Sea until Sunless Skies comes out lol
Make melted snow from long dark
It's a little difficult to make all you need is a fire.
Oh my god, you're awesome. 🤣 You really made me laugh at the lament onion bit.
Wouldn't a lament onion be simply a really, really strong onion
This vid got emotional really quickly
For the record, saving the root of the onion will go a lot further than the skin if you want to make yourself cry.
Delicious human tears
Little tip: if you're making this for other people don't add tears - unless they don't mind a little mucous in their food? O.o
Just made this. Its really good
What do you say about a behind the scenes video whit the poor grocery shopkeeper to whom you ask all this weird stuff every week?
those onions weren't sweating, they were crying
You wound yourself to get the pity of stone. Salt teleports you on the other hand
After watching the Grog video, I was dreading how this one would go, but... nope. This sounds doable.
you can now consider yourself a Chef-Paramount
Would the truffles have darkened it to a proper red?
Cinnamon Butterscotch Pie from Undertale, OR anything from Undertale really...Spider Doughnut, Nice Cream. This list goes on
Onions don't have parents but definitely do give Christmas presents
"The taste: paprika, mushrooms, irony"did you taste the irony? according to an engineer's mate it tastes like sulphur.
Will there ever be a proper recipe for these recipes? Either on the Eurogamer site, or in the description?
Those poor onions...
Have you tried making any of the dishes from Monster Hunter 4? Or any of the other Monster Hunter games? It may involve hunting some Aptanoths, but I'm sure you can throw something together!
You solve the puzzle of the Lament Onions you summon Pin Head from Hell Raiser
You should grow onions together and make sure they get along rather well and then when they become quite jolly onions you just cut one in front of the others and the next day cut another one and so on. That's how you get lament onions. And desperate onions. And really traumatised onions. But be careful, you can also get some deranged onions and they are dangerous. Think twice, maybe it's easier just to buy them in hell.
Roses are edible... just use a dark rose?
i should cry in my soup next time
Cook the Marshmellow/scag urine pizza used in Borderlands 2 to lure out the assassins in the Splinter Group sidequest.
I bet it was the tears that really made the sou...er...zzoup work.
How about a joint cooking session with Johnny and fake Johnny?
I totally gotta try this.
They're Lament Onions because they make you lament.
As in, they make you sad. Because you cry. Because it's an onion.
Or, being Sunless Sea, THEY probably cry when you cut them
It tastes so good cause you made those onions lament
Christopher Hitchens has a joke about onions. I won't link the video, but you should search for it because it reveals that yes, onions do have parents.
Believe it or not, onions have parents...
Any idea how much truffle oil was asked? That stuff is both very potent and rather expensive?
Salt and hanged men's tears? Really? Sounds like way too much salt in this one
Lies! Lies I tells ya! Zzoup, as anyone knows, can only be obtained from wells guarded by the Zzoup Dragon. The hint of irony in the flavour profile comes from the fact there is no recipe... honest.
you could have used red onions and just some rose petals with colorant
AHHHHH WE HAVE THE SAME KETTLE
13 turns on the salt grinder for luck :D
Did i miss the part where he added the truffle oil?
when he fried the onions.
No that's a lamenting onion your thinking of
Do the leblanc curry and coffee from persona 5
Or yoshi cookies
Give me a shout if you need weird esoteric ingredients.
I can actually source priest tears, holy water, etc.
Varangian Bill how?
Maybe it would be better to use Zee Salt?
I'm very disappointed you didn't find a priest and break his heart. There's no way your zzoup was authentic!
Poor onions
You should do Mrs' Plentys rubbery lumps!
God i love this game
Hey, want to make this myself. Would you mind giving more detailed instructions (quantities, steps, cooking timings)? Thanks so much!
"Black and grows in hell" well, there is a town in Oklahoma named hell, try looking there
Please get a bigger tripod or a way to mouth the camera on the wall whilst putting food into the pans, it would be so much better seeing the food enter the pot rather then watching a side angle of foods dropping into abyss.
Might have to try this one. Now where to get chiodini tears......
Its definitely the tears that made it taste good😂
Fortunately, human tars are bacteria free. Unfortunately, the entirety of the human eye isn't.
Can you make Ash Yam Stew from Skyrim?
Hi Johnny :) Guess I'll go check this game out lol, soundtrack sounds good :o
+Tony Friddle do it, it's excellent! Tricky, but excellent!
Please make Brahmin fries from fallout two.
Rose petals are edible and truffle oil is pure garbage. With little to no truffle in it .
Loved it
You should make the Stacked ham sandwich from FFXV
Why was Johnny opening his glasses with his mouth so fucking sexy?
Sadly he's taken...😭😭😭
Dream Daddy material right there
Project BAWLZ you should see the video when he made estus soup. He took off his glasses and you can see his eye color clearly and honestly it's quiet enchanting :/
I think it's the way he maintains eye contact while doing it.
I posted this idea! YEAH!
You can actually get a recipe for Zzoup in Fallen London as an item. fallenlondon.wikia.com/wiki/A_Recipe_for_Zzoup
Awww Johnny you're such a bae
Of course you would love Sunless Sea!
You couldve used black chillies
