Hans Christian Anderson wrote a great many pleasant, adorable, child-oriented fairy stories. He also wrote some less-pleasant stories. The one I want to share with you here is among the least pleasant of them all. Not just because of the story’s contents, but because of what they mean.
According to Andersen, your own shadow is just about the scariest monster there is.

There's something interesting about the composition here. There is a certain dream logic to these tales that exists even in the oldest folk tales we have. And until the modern age, this is never called out, its just accepted, much like the dream logic in the story is just accepted. Modern eyes see it with a sort of confused bemusement, but I think it functions as a powerful tonal tool. It's funny, it makes the *listener* laugh, so that the moral lessons can be more easily digested, and beyond that, it conjurs strong images that stay with us. It makes these tales memorable and identifiable.

    • @clayxros576

An excellent observation. In presenting the known world with only a wisp of fantasy (describing the shadow as shrinking away, foreshadowing that sounds normal) and then simply cold opening into the mechanics of the world, a far deeper impression is left using the juxtaposition. I think it is a technique that should be used more often honestly. It is the grandest expression of show dont tell.

    • @TheScarletSlayer

An interesting interpretation but I have to disagree. Anderson doesn't normally use his characters symbolically but rather representatively. In this case, I believe, the shadow represents the fake friend. He follows you around copying everything you do until he sees the chance to take something that you don't have but want. He lives off of other peoples successes, incapable of thinking creatively. He digs up secrets about people that he can use to manipulate them. I see the warning that, if you wait too long to call them out, he will have convinced everyone that you are a jealous copy cat and no one will believe you.

    • @TheTaleFoundry
      @TheTaleFoundry  2 года назад +1379

That's an interesting take! I like your angle. Maybe he did mean that, I've seen suggestions that this story was modeled after an acquaintance of his
But I also think the individual interpretations of readers are as valuable as the author's intended message. I'm not terribly concerned with what Andersen meant with the story-I'm interested in what the story means to me. It is not our sole task as readers to divine the author's intent. We should be engaging our own creative and interpretive abilities as well

I agree with both your takes tbh, while hearing the story I had the very uncomfortable feeling that the shadow was the personification of a narcissist and the learned man a representation of his victims. I unfortunately have my own trauma of a narcissist in my own family, and I felt when the learned man started to be complicit in the shadow's abuse of him, he represented that part of me who lost myself in that childhood trauma and, instead of confronting and overcoming it, grew paralyzed and complicit in sinking deeper into despair until eventually, I didn't even need to be in contact with my narcissist anymore to continue to be stuck in thi cycle. So, in that way, the video's interpretation is very accurate. Definitely an eye-opening video and story.

@@robdeskrd I don't think the real world has ever not needed saving. Maybe in Eden, but even then, I'm not quite sure. But the hypothetical fantasy world, in some parts of the story Talebot told, has locations that are said to be all light and no shadow.
Also, the idea in the original comment is a very profound one. When times are hard, heroes rise. Once those heroes win, and things become better, then there is - not a world, perhaps, but a place that no longer needs saving. Without that pressure, the virtues that built this place die out - and it falls into decay again, causing the hard times at the beginning of the cycle. When times are good, we become self-destructive.

Some versions have the prince executed as a liar when he tries to regain his place.

When I was trying to understand Jung’s idea of the shadow, I thought of it in a way this story reminds me of. There are a lot of people in the world who think of themselves as a “good person” and “I would/could never do bad things”, but are actually more cruel than most. When they act in a cruel way, they come up with some reason or excuse as to why they did. They never take ownership of it, they’re a “good person”, so if they act cruel, it must be the target of the cruelty that’s the problem.
Everyone has good and bad things about them. But the more shameful you are of your less than perfect aspects, the less you want to acknowledge them. But when you turn a blind eye to your darker side, it can get up to a lot more trouble because you aren’t watching it, just like we see in the story. You can do whatever bad things you want if you aren’t taking ownership of them. You’re letting your shadow run amok, and when you’re telling yourself it isn’t you, it takes over your life and replaces you.
Basically, we embody our shadow when we act in those negative ways, but the shadow we embody is only as bad as we define it. We learn shame of our negative actions early in life that makes us think it’s a lot worse than it is. So bad that we can’t even attach ourselves to it and we look the other way rather than keeping it under control. It’s easiest to understand with this example I told myself:
Someone who says “I never get angry” thinks of anger as so bad, they can’t even see it as part of themselves. These people have the worst anger when it does come out. They define the emotion of anger as extremely negative, so when they embody it, they act extremely negative. They also never see it coming because they think they’re incapable of being angry or “above” being angry. There’s a shame about anger that both overly vilifies it, and distances it from us because we don’t want to think we are bad.
Compare to someone who says “I get angry just like everyone else, so I try to be careful of my response.” They don’t see anger as that bad, even natural, so they’re able to own it. When they embody the shadow that they define as “not that bad”, it comes out as not that bad, or even no different from how they normally are, like someone calmly expressing “that really upsets me” and trying to communicate the problem. They’re not ashamed of the negative aspect of themselves that everyone has. Probably because a parent or formative event didn’t put that shame in them and tell them that their negative aspects make them unacceptable and unloveable. That’s how we come to think of the negative aspects as “so bad that I can’t think of it as part of myself.”
More poetically, the farther away from yourself you see your shadow, the greater it grows. The closer you are to it, the more you see that it matches you exactly. When you try to escape your own shadow and stand by the light, the shadow covers everything. When you approach your shadow and try to embrace it, (like standing against the wall where your shadow is) you cover it completely. You’ve replaced it and now you cast no shadow at all, or the shadow you do cast is just you. In this story, that last thing is happening, except the other way around; the shadow is approaching the main character and is no longer casting a person. Rather than the shadow you cast just being you, the person your shadow casts is just your shadow. That’s what it means when it takes over your life.
Idk maybe this is harder to understand than how Jung put it, but it was how I explained it to myself, and it’s why the story reminded me of it before you even mentioned Jung. To me, this is what the author was saying, regardless of whether they were conscious of it or not.

I was a avid reader of fairy tales growing up, so I had actually read this one as a child, and remembered taking it as a particularly harsh cautionary tale against keeping bad secrets from bad people and that one should stand up and do what's right even when it's detrimental to you. It wasn't until I reread it as an adult that I immediately associated it with Jung, and thought of it less as a warning of standing up against outside forces, and more an example of why you need to master your own darker desires, less they stop becoming what you want and become what you are.

It was really cool watching this, because yesterday I finished writing a fairytale-style story about a shadow, without ever having heard of Andersen’s tale. I love the themes you went into, and about embracing the darkness within. It’s a bit ironic, since Andersen’s story is largely about a person who loses their shadow, while my story is about a shadow that loses its person and finds itself without a purpose. I find it interesting all the different subjects you can tackle with the same basic idea. Andersen’s story involves dominance and submission, while mine’s about codependence.

I've found the best way to have a hero confront his shadow is to acknowledge that it's a part of him and make it a useful tool. In a drama, he'd use it to achieve his dream or restore some order; maybe even improve himself. In a horror or action story, he'd unleash it from its binds in order to enact a necessary evil to bring about a new good. In a comedy, such a character can be used for many a funny moment where his weakness is the butt of a joke and even his greatest setup for a different punchline.
A Shadow only has power in its solitude if you reject it; treat it as a curse or a demon. The only way to defeat the Shadow is use it similarly to your arm: it is a tool to engage a challenge. It is to be understood as such because its darkness can even be a useful tool to achieve something greater for himself or those around him. Like a hand, one must know when to raise it as a fist, shape it to grip or manipulate, or when to keep it in one's pocket. It will only destroy you if you reject it. Yet, letting it loose with no control or greater understanding, will lead one to ruin as they succumb to darker desires.

And kids who grew up reading the closest to originals were traumatized but also probably a horror fan as well.

That was an excellent story! This should be taught to more people so we can overcome certain things like biases I think

Thats very beautiful. As someone who has, to some limited degree, confronted their shadow before, I can say it is a worthwhile thing to do. Often best done in pieces to avoid being overwhelmed. I still have some of my shadow to confront, and doubt I will ever finish wholly.

I have read both the tale and the essay for school, but I always took them at face value as cautionary, thank you for enlightening me in their hopeful side.

I think your art stile is really cool! I really like drawing characters with all white eyes but when I was younger a lot of kids and a couple teachers thought it was creepy. That was really hard on me back then so it's cool to see someone else with a similar art style.

I always wondered what would happen in these stories about shadows if someone just stood in the middle of a bunch of lights and made a bunch of shadows around them.

I think there's also some commentary in this story about the difference between the wise and the corrupt in society, and the responsibility of the former to confront the latter. The learned people are often ignored by society (or so it sometimes feels), while the shallow, corrupt people find success because they cater to society's expectations of success. However, these corrupt people will take advantage of society, and the learned people, despite all they know and can offer, will be trampled underfoot so long as they do nothing - it is the learned person's responsibility to confront corruption when they see it, or everyone will suffer.
Also, there's a lesson on the importance of not missing opportunities when they present themselves - whether it was the man entering the mysterious house full of knowledge, confronting his shadow's wrong-doings, etc.
