  • In 1898 the Chatto Creek Gold Dredging Company launched a gold dredge in Central Otago, New Zealand on the Manuherikia River. The Chatto Creek dredge operated through to 1909 before being abandoned.
Learn about the history of the dredge while watching heavy machinery relocate its remnants from the river to a place of permanent public display at the Chatto Creek Tavern.
Located beside the Otago Central Rail Trail it now provides motorists and cycling enthusiasts with a wonderful insight into the history of the 228 dredges which worked in Otago and Southland during the country's 1900 gold dredging boom.

did you know that some of the larger chunks of gold rolled right down the carpets and off in the tailings..

Most gold dredges only recovered the smaller stuff. They used a classifier that dumped anything bigger than (?) 1.5 - 2.5 inches in diameter. 95% of all gold recovered by dredges is the small stuff.
If you go thru the tailings piles with a metal detector, you may just find a fairly large nugget. Have done this myself... Just don't tell the landowners. Get permission to be there, but deny what you have found.
