Never heard of Professor Dave, but, wow, what a great interview. One thing I would add is that I think many people cling to creationism because they have never encountered the concept of emergent properties. Emergent properties is the idea that behaviors emerge from complex systems that cannot be predicted from the properties of the components of the system. These emergent properties come from not only the properties of the components but also from the ways that those components are interconnected. It was the idea of emergent properties that was the last nail in God's coffin for me.

I think you meant to use the term or question, _"How did life come from non-life?"_ -- The answer to that is that the question is nonsensical. In reality, the question is "How did chemical reactions happen to develop what we classify as "life"? "Life" is nothing more than bio-chemistry and chemistry has been around since the beginning of time.
The real question is how were physics and chemistry so carefully tuned as to make life possible? The mathematical probability against life being possible is something like 10^10^123. A number so vast that it effectively destroys mathematics. BTW I think a fairly precise definition of life can be made. It requires something that can achieve homeostasis plus self-replication plus self-evolution.
@@Lucien86 -- _"The real question is how were physics and chemistry so carefully tuned as to make life possible? "_ -- This assumes that they _were,_ in fact, "tuned". It's just a stupid question. _"The mathematical probability against life being possible is something like 10^10^123."_ -- I'm calling bullshit on this. From what ass did you pull that number? _"A number so vast that it effectively destroys mathematics."_ -- Numbers don't "destroy" mathematics. If it did, you wouldn't be able to calculate the number, which you appear to think was actually possible. This is a self-defeating statement.
@@dienekes4364 Oh dear talk about shooting yourself in the foot. If you understood higher level mathematics or exponential numbers you would understand why that number destroys ordinary mathematics. Its source BTW is Roger Penrose a colleague of Steven Hawking, talking on the Anthropic Principle in the book 'The Emperors New Mind'. As for a fine tuned physics I suggest you look up the Wikipedia article "Fine-tuned Universe". Like it says fine tuning is a 'mostly' accepted part of physics.
Thank you. Concerning Flat-Earthers, I feel they must have extreme trust issues. 1. They need to be asked, do they think every person who ever loved or taught them, lied to them. 2. If so, what was the purpose? 3. And who or how was this organized?
I think for the rare exceptions of actual sociopaths most actually have an excessive trust of their own group or perhaps more aptly 'tribe', as they see any ideological opposition as a matter of conflict for their own cultural survival. They actually don't know what for, by whom and generally don't care about their opposition overall.

Yes, we should show we value education, but the know-nothings are the ones sitting in the back of the class in high school on their phones, never listening to their teachers. A small percentage of people are just uneducable. Critical thinking classes aren’t going to help them.
It seems to me that what we are hard-wired for seeking agency in the unknown. This is a survival mechanism, e.g. what made that sound, what caused that bush to move, etc. The step that is hard too get into is that the agency is frequently chance/chaos or the really scary one, "no one knows". I love how Dave goes after the flat earthers and science misinformation, head first and not being afraid to call them out. It make these people spreading misinformation uncomfortable which is a very good thing
The Discovery Institute is not an institute, and they have never discovered anything. I heard that 70% of their payroll goes to lawyers, but I can't confirm that.

Now that is irony.
One of the biggest attractions to a conspiracy, where a person believes someone is controlling certain aspects of our lives, is the underlying belief that these things can be controlled.
Proff Dave is my favourite debunker by far. Most are way too polite to the totally dishonest flerths and creationists. Dave realises how damaging these ppl are. They all need to be laughed at, then told where to go.
Thank you Professor Dave!!!!!!!
This was my intro to Professor Dave. THANKS!
Same here.
@pithicus52 Go watch his MANY tutorials! 1000's of them. And BEFORE you watch any of his debunking vids. I began watching his stuff when he had about 100K subs. He has over 3 M subs now.
His debunking vids can be very caustic, He pulls no punches when addressing egregious grifters and morons. You don't "believe" some currently accepted science? Dave will tell you why that is STUPID! And... he did teach at a junior college level. He has a Masters and not PhD degree, but Professor none the less
I love to watch and rewatch Professor Dave induce a meltdown in James (💩4🧠) Tour. Professor Dave 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I consistently got C’s in science in high school and college (mostly because of laziness) but have easily analyzed the claims of the monotheists vs. reason and science and determined that even a mediocre student such as I couldn’t believe the creationist nonsense.
I love Dave! I'm a neuroscience student and ive used a lot of his videos to help study. I really appreciate how many topics he covers. He's also one of my favorite hosts on the line...and ngl, he's fine lol. I'm actually going to take a break from chem to watch this.

Love ya Dave.
My therapist stopped mentioning the Woodcock Johnson test because I kept smirking every time she said it.
Seth and Dr Dave, two great communicators on one podcast. Just awesome.
Yes, fabulous.
He doesn’t have a doctorate, so he isn’t Dr. Dave. But yes, they are great.
Fantastic interview, just subbed.

Professor Dave is an actual hero, thanks for having him on.
Good Lord! Those James Tour clips are disturbing. I thought he was going to stroke out!
Great guest! I love listening to both of your channels!
That's like a puddle asking how the indent that the water settled in was so "perfectly formed".

Concerning Flat-Earthers, I feel they must have extreme trust issues.
1. They need to be asked, do they think every person who ever loved or taught them, lied to them.
2. If so, what was the purpose?
3. And who or how was this organized?
Yea ..and they wouldn't have any pilots in the family if they did they wouldn't get invited to the BBQ ...
@@vls3771 Same for NASA workers, they're probably shunned. What do the 19K NASA employees actually do?
I think for the rare exceptions of actual sociopaths most actually have an excessive trust of their own group or perhaps more aptly 'tribe', as they see any ideological opposition as a matter of conflict for their own cultural survival.
They actually don't know what for, by whom and generally don't care about their opposition overall.
Love this insight. Good interview, good answers. Both of you please keep doing your stuff.

Money itself could make a huge difference in education, plus giving more resources to it shows that knowledge and clear thinking are valued.
Yes, we should show we value education, but the know-nothings are the ones sitting in the back of the class in high school on their phones, never listening to their teachers. A small percentage of people are just uneducable. Critical thinking classes aren’t going to help them.
Stupidity is dangerous.
Very very dangerous.

34:39 This is what Dr Dan McClellan calls, "Negotiating with the text".
Love Dr. McClellan!
It seems to me that what we are hard-wired for seeking agency in the unknown. This is a survival mechanism, e.g. what made that sound, what caused that bush to move, etc. The step that is hard too get into is that the agency is frequently chance/chaos or the really scary one, "no one knows". I like to include "yet" though there is always that it is possible to be unknowable.
One of my favourite authors tackles this:
“Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.”

Dave's LACK of patience with all of the total nonsense that pretends to be science, is absolutely appropriate.

Being a member of an in-group is stress relieving until one realizes they're in one or more sub-out-group(s) within their in-group. Such as: a young flat earther creationist.
My favorite thing professor Dave said to James tour was "what is your obsession with chalk" 😂
A major improvement in the eductaional system would be to teach a course in logic.
Sadly that will never happen.

I honestly wish Prof. Dave would appear as a semi regular on the Line. He would add so much valid body of knowledge in debunkin theists with actual complex science but served in laymans terms.
Its insane to me that science has to defend itself so hardcore, religion just keeps coming at it like a rabid dog, makes me feel so helpless and angry.

One of the RUclips sites called "Daily Dose Of Wisdom" is one of those sites that labels Meyer as a top Scientist when it comes to debunking Evolution and John Lennox is included too
I think they’ll take anyone with a real degree and a pulse. And a desire to lie through their teeth on subjects upon which they are not qualified.
Oh dear. No end to their deviousness 🍀🍀🍀
I am wary of any site that uses spiritual babble in their title. 'Wisdom' is just one of those babblings.
Im very impressed how a background in chemistry provides an avenue to be an authority on virtually everything. Certainly this is an unnassailable brand of argument.
