How old is this interview? The Dr. Dave vs James Tour live debate was quite a while ago. I think that I watched it like, six months or a year ago, not a few weeks ago...
I think you meant to use the term or question, _"How did life come from non-life?"_ -- The answer to that is that the question is nonsensical. In reality, the question is "How did chemical reactions happen to develop what we classify as "life"? "Life" is nothing more than bio-chemistry and chemistry has been around since the beginning of time.
The real question is how were physics and chemistry so carefully tuned as to make life possible? The mathematical probability against life being possible is something like 10^10^123. A number so vast that it effectively destroys mathematics. BTW I think a fairly precise definition of life can be made. It requires something that can achieve homeostasis plus self-replication plus self-evolution.
@@Lucien86 -- _"The real question is how were physics and chemistry so carefully tuned as to make life possible? "_ -- This assumes that they _were,_ in fact, "tuned". That's like a puddle asking how the indent that the water settled in was so "perfectly formed". It's just a stupid question. _"The mathematical probability against life being possible is something like 10^10^123."_ -- I'm calling bullshit on this. From what ass did you pull that number? _"A number so vast that it effectively destroys mathematics."_ -- Numbers don't "destroy" mathematics. If it did, you wouldn't be able to calculate the number, which you appear to think was actually possible. This is a self-defeating statement.
@@dienekes4364 Oh dear talk about shooting yourself in the foot. If you understood higher level mathematics or exponential numbers you would understand why that number destroys ordinary mathematics. Its source BTW is Roger Penrose a colleague of Steven Hawking, talking on the Anthropic Principle in the book 'The Emperors New Mind'. Good Lord! Those James Tour clips are disturbing. I thought he was going to stroke out!
45 minutes of Seth & Dave is too short!
Love Dave!!!!!!
I've been a sub and fan of Prof Dave for quite awhile now. His snark is top shelf.
Stupidity is dangerous.
Very very dangerous.
Money itself could make a huge difference in education, plus giving more resources to it shows that knowledge and clear thinking are valued.
Yes, we should show we value education, but the know-nothings are the ones sitting in the back of the class in high school on their phones, never listening to their teachers. A small percentage of people are just uneducable. Critical thinking classes aren’t going to help them.
He knows a lot about the science stuff!
Omg how was I NOT subscribed to Seth’s channel?! I could’ve sworn I subscribed like a year ago 🤔 regardless, I just corrected said oversight 👍👍👍 Great show, Seth! Tks for always being a beacon of hope & logic ❤️
Strange, I just checked and realized I'm not subscribed again. I never 'unsubscribe' from this channel, but it's the 3rd time I'm subscribing 🤔
It’s a weird glitch that has been literally happening for like 10 years. They’ve never never fixed it. You’ll just randomly be unsubscribed from channels
@@svjetlanaradovic9053yeah YT’s been really sketchy lately imo. Not saying it’s related but I know I was subbed to his channel.
@@svjetlanaradovic9053ok so since you said that I just checked and found more channels that I was randomly unsubbed from. Wtf’s going on?
@41:16 I think multiple languages should be taught from the very beginning instead of waiting till later.
My favorite thing professor Dave said to James tour was "what is your obsession with chalk" 😂
34:39 This is what Dr Dan McClellan calls, "Negotiating with the text".
Love Dr. McClellan!
It seems to me that what we are hard-wired for seeking agency in the unknown. This is a survival mechanism, e.g. what made that sound, what caused that bush to move, etc. The step that is hard too get into is that the agency is frequently chance/chaos or the really scary one, "no one knows". I like to include "yet" though there is always that it is possible to be unknowable.
One of my favourite authors tackles this:
“Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.”
― Kurt Vonnegut, Cat’s Cradle
Great to see Dave on here! He honestly got me through my BS degree!
Hot dog! I love Professor Dave! His is one of my favorite channels along with Forrest's and Erika's.
Thinking Atheist, Seth, and Professor Dave!! Hoorah! I don't think you need worry Seth. Bringing up kent, to laugh, is fine! You both are fantastic communicators! Only believers think anything came from/out of nothing! I think origin of life was chemical, whether here on earth or 'out there'! We also need to tax the very rich, and corperations, amd churches!! That would fund a hell of a lot of education, plus the switch to greener energy more science, etc. Churches can still write off charity, some expenses, etc. but open their books! 👍🏼💙💙💙🌊🥰✌🏽
What a freaking great caption! "Bullshit incorporated! Great! Just magnet for the eyes!
Dave rocks!!!
So important what you. I wish more youtubers would make channels like this and jump on this topic. The crazy ones are already out there on YT, the sane ones must follow.
Honestly I like a good conspiracy like aliens or something... But when people tell other people dangerous things like HIV don't exist, the line has to be drawn.
And yes, HIV denial is coming back and surprise HIV infections are rising again.
9:32 The NSA had employees take this test back in the 80s. The personality type results are so broad as to be useless.
Wasn’t it designed by the Navy for nuclear submarine crew ? That’s the story I was told. It was big in GE back in the day.
Dave's LACK of patience with all of the total nonsense that pretends to be science, is absolutely appropriate.
Aye always nice to see Professor Dave
I appreciate you discussing Meyers-Briggs personality assessment. It's a useful tool for understanding the personality of oneself and others. It promotes tolerance of differences. It's a great starting point for those starting therapy and encourages further education and self discovery. I know it has limitations but I don't put it into the category of junk science.
I appreciate this channel and the guests who bring such substance to important conversations.
Thank you
How old is this interview? The Dr. Dave vs James Tour live debate was quite a while ago. I think that I watched it like, six months or a year ago, not a few weeks ago...
Professor Dave is awesome
Professor Dave is bloody marvellous and in the case of james tour vs Professor Dave, Professor Dave is just too fantastic
How did Abiogenesis happen according to Professor Dave?
As for a fine tuned physics I suggest you look up the Wikipedia article "Fine-tuned Universe". Like it says fine tuning is a 'mostly' accepted part of physics.
@@Lucien86 -- What part of "from what ASS did you pull that number?" did you fail to comprehend?
The planets have aligned! Great collab.
Awesome ❤
Clicked through my screen!
I honestly wish Prof. Dave would appear as a semi regular on the Line. He would add so much valid body of knowledge in debunkin theists with actual complex science but served in laymans terms.
Teach the scientific method more would be my recommendation.
Thank you.
