    This does touch on a very interesting concept: we have he idea that computers are so much better then our brains, but that’s only at processing raw mathematical data… you start asking it to process a complicated 3 dimensional image and, well… just ask any animator how long it takes for the computer to render their animations, meanwhile our brain is perfectly capable of doing exactly that however we want it at the moment we want it, no render time needed…
    The computer is an incredible tool for helping us in all the things we are bad at, like math and logic, but it’s pretty damn dreadful at the things we are good at, like visual processing, abstract thought and imagination.
    I feel like a human slowly getting integrated into a computer would notice this lack of fundamental functions and feel like it’s being restricted more then liberated.

I mean, imagine if an alien ship showed up and temporarily took over all the bandwidth available on the internet to upload the sum total of their database onto it for all to see. I mean, sure, it'd be unsettling and disruptive for such an integral technology to be temporarily hijacked (and hopefully they'd give us adequate warning to make sure no one was using any important, automated technology while they were doing it), but wouldn't it also be kind of worth it?

      Actually, he said "Decades".
      The several days they spent there must have been beyond fascinating!
      But, the point of the story, the aspect that made it a complete episode of TNG, is it being also about how it affected the crew members _personally._
      These episodes are not just about their new discoveries, they are about the experiences of the people who encountered them.

    Rewatching this after playing through all of Star Trek: Resurgence I can see so many connections between The Traveler, Super-Human Barkley, and the Tkon. Tkon technology is utilized through the power of thought, Tkon technology granted one of their people a virtually eternal life, they spanned thousands of lightyears for thousands of years, they had warp speed capability beyond what even Star Fleet or the Romulans know - many times faster than warp 9.8 (the max warp for most federation ships, without damaging the ship itself, 9.99 for absolute necessities). The Tkon achieved all this through thought. Likewise, the Traveler basically tells Wesley that time, space, and thought are not separate concepts, but one entity in and of itself. Wesley even takes this to a bit of an extreme and his mother nearly ends up brain dead/actually dead because of it (when he trapped her in a warp bubble that was collapsing). In this very episode, Barkley states that he, through his thought and direct neuro control of the ship, can achieve speeds and distances greater than Star Fleet currently can. I believe Barkley unlocked the same secrets that the Tkon did, and that The Traveler's know.
    Another bit of detail - the Traveler's aren't ever explained. We don't know much about them as a species, and only interact with one of them. Since they use thought to travel their great distances, through time, etc. There is a distinct possibility that they are either a predecessor to distant descendent of the Tkon.

    Its a shame there was never an episode where the main computer became self-aware, in any of the series. There was only that one episode where some life form grew inside Enterprise's relays and the ship acted like a creature, but none where the computer itself became self-aware.

    • @JarrodFrates
      @JarrodFrates 2 года назад +2

      There's a canon reason for this. In TOS episode "The Ultimate Computer," the Daystrom M-5 computer is installed on the Enterprise. The M-5 is an enormous advance, with Daystrom encoding human engrams into it to improve its logic capabilities and, essentially, give it sentience. However, the computer goes off on its own, drawing more and more of the ship's power and eventually attacking a robotic freighter, destroying it even though it presented no threat. When they try to deactivate the computer, it reacts by killing a crew member. When a wargame starts soon after, the M-5 uses full weapons and nearly destroys the USS Excalibur, killing its entire crew in the process.
      After this, Star Fleet became extremely cautious of such approaches and put in place protective mechanisms to prevent a recurrence. That's not to say a writer couldn't get around this--this very episode comes close, as LaForge noted that Barclay was essentially rewriting the computer--but the superiority of man over machine is a running tenet of Star Trek, and a thinking computer could easily push past, as the M-5 did. Even with Data's protections, he came very close to outright murdering Kivas Fajo because he believed it was the only way to stop him.

    I still for one would not believe that matter creates conscious. I’ve had too many out of body experiences to believe otherwise. But for this to happen, a choice to move the consciousness would probably be first made in a super conscious level from the “soul” or “higher self” or whatever you want to call it.
