- Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo on Sunday praised the heroism of Malian immigrant, Mamoudou Gassama, who scaled the facade of a four-storey building to save a child hanging from a ledge, saying the city will support his effort to settle in France. The video of Gassama's quick climbing to reach the child, cheered on by terrified onlookers, went viral on social media, with people calling the 22-year-old a real spiderman.
Not only did he become a French citizen, but he became a firefighter in France in July 2018 after he was offered a job with the department. A hero, now with the job of a hero. It's perfect.

The Malian is a hero but I don’t think we can discount the other person. There is a wall separating the toddler and the person, meaning holding the toddler up requires your hand to be in an awkward position and you leaning on the balcony which is also risky. These factors result in your arm not being able to output as much force compared.
You can try it yourself, stand right in a doorway and stretch one of hands sideways while forcing it against a wall

Adrenaline is a crazy thing. When my sister fell off the bridge on our pond when we were kids, my brother dove in and I swear, with super human strength, he swam to her and caught her right before she fell over the break before the waterfall that was a 12 foot drop into shallow rocky water. It happened in like 10 seconds. He cleared probably 10 feet in five strokes it was amazing.

@@jamilakhtar8889 the child was alone and one would assume the apartment was locked. Someone was likely on their way to unlock or otherwise get in to the apartment but the child being able to hold long enough was unlikely.

It's his fitness that gets me. He makes it look easy as hell. That takes quite a bit of strength, balance and overall fitness to do, never mind in 30 seconds. Add in the fact he could fall to his own death if he slipped.
I'm sure most everyone watching would have liked to help to but this guy made it look easy. In another situation this would involve dozens of people watching in horror praying and crossing their fingers. Good on him for being physcially able to help.

Can you imagine the fear he must have endured himself whilst scaling this balconies knowing that one miscalculation meant he would plunge to his own death.
Add on top of that, the pressure he would have felt knowing each second that child's grip would be weakening.

He didn't have any fear while climbing, he's mind was entirely focused on the kid. It's only afterwards, once the kid saved , that he realised and started shaking. I think all the strength of his body had been fired up by his will to save the child.

I'm a fully grown man who is quite sceptical about the world who doesn't suffer fools gladly, but when I saw this amazingly wonderful brave man disregarding his own safety to scale the block of flats to save the child I had a tear or two in my eyes. President Machron, please, you must let this man settle in your country so he can better his life, What a wonderful caring human being. If I was French I would campaign relentlessly to petition for him to be allowed to settle permanently in France.

Carolus S but his entire arm including shoulder is on the same side the kid is on. Meaning he can make any rotations and any movements he needs to to grab the kid. So I think the dude could’ve easily pulled the little kid up
