Great news about the video...sorry to hear about your 2020...it’s been a horrible year. Im wishing you and your family well! Just found this video! I would love to see more of your process! I am new to 3D printing and would die for some tips on how to modify thingiverse items to fit my needs as you did in this video!
@@alexanderpurdyvalle Hi and thanks for the kind words! It's a bit tough to give specifics of the printing process since all printers and materials require different settings (and our settings likely won't work perfectly for everyone), but we do plan to show more of the modeling and printing processes in future videos.
This was really helpful. I'm making a wood and hand sculpted catan board for my husband, but I don't know anything about the game, and you added so many useful upgrades that I never would have considered. I might even 3D print some pieces now, which I never considered despite having a printer lol.
I've always wanted to make a 3D Catan set like this. But this is Way cooler than what I was envisioning! A set like this for Carcassone would be awesome too.
This is the absilute best rendition of this Ive seen. Great work! My brother will love one of these sets. That means Ill have to make 2! Amazing work guys
This video was amazing. I have one piece of advice, and that is to thin your paints. A lot. Ideally for model painting, the paint should be well thinned, and you apply multiple thin coats. It helps retain more detail of the original piece. But truly, amazing build!
The board looks amazing. I was recently looking at buying a 3D set and instead bought a 3D printer to do it myself. I would love to see how you guys store your set. What about a 5-6 person expansion or even there sea expansion.
We don't have a great storage solution at the moment. We're currently using a wooden box we bought on Amazon. We would also like to do an expansion as well. Stay tuned!
so we have catan here as well, but i have never seen hose boring blocky wood houses, we have always had plastic houses and city's wich are actually quite pretty looking
Thank you for showing all your steps. I don't see myself as artistic and I have not done any 3D printing. However, your video makes it seem approachable. Looks great!
Wow it's been so long since I've played this game I forgot it existed this so epic. This brings back some really good memories for me I have to get a set and play with my friends again. Thanks man.
Incredible work! Definitely needs more views. I wish you were selling them. I'd be curious, if you can simplify the process a bit to go retail, what it would cost to get this made. 🤔
Do Patreon subscribers get the altered gcode that pauses the print to insert the magnets? I'm not good with the software, so if you offer the updated code files then I'm definitely gonna become a Patreon member.
Responding to a 3 year old video: One of the first things I 3d printed when I got my very first 3d printer was a Catan board. Gave it away to a friend when he moved. It was really cool to have and just added an amazing dimension to the game. Must be why there is an official 3d board now.
In the video you have the player pieces (roads, settlements, cities) nicely organized in what looks like perfectly-sized little bins. Would you where you got those bins or what size they are? Thanks!
3D printed Catan is so awesome. It looks much better than the cardboard tiles. The magnets are a great idea. I kinda wish I'd used the magnet model when I printed mine a couple years ago.
Great video! Do you have an affiliated link for the magnetic balls? the one in the description seems to be a dead link. I'd love for you to get something so we keep getting videos like this
Did you print all parts using the Finder(s)? This was my first 3D printer and I loved it. I still use it for TPU but it is sooooo slow even compared to my Anycubic Adventurer 3 and especially my Kobra 2 Printers
This is the coolest set of catan I have seen. It would be sooooo awesome if you als make the sea tiles and boots whicht come with the seafarers extension
Although there are some things that I would change in my version of a custom Catan game...the one thing that you did that I think is genius is making the robber a dragon! I recently looked to upgrade my robber as well and was simply going to use a miniature of a thief (robber). It never dawned on me to use something else...like a dragon! Brilliant!!
I just finished printing these out and painting them. The game looks excellent. Here are a couple of comments: Printing using a snapmaker 2.0: The wool tiles (4,5,6) on the option 2 group are not Wool but wood. Opened the option 1 tiles and they are correct but since my printer has a lot of metal we opted for double printing the wool tiles (1,2,3) The cactus on your tiles seem much larger than those on the printable tiles. I would have liked the larger cactus. My printer had a heck of a time printing the piers on the water tiles. Might be my printer but nearly all of them deformed in some way or another. The wheat tiles sometimes failed at print as well. There seems to be voids under the wheat bundles that cause the bundles to break off easily. The dragon is awesome. But difficult to print with a PLA printer. I suggest a resin printer for the dragon and the trophies. The painting was long and arduous. However, a painting party made short work of it. Despite my gripes, the finished game looks fantastic and my family has spent quite a few hours playing it.
Hi there! Thanks for the feedback! You were right about the missing wool pieces. If you message us your email address I will send the correct ones to you (We're updating the download as well). I suspect the cavity beneath the wheat may be a slicing error (we have had similar issues) but we'll double check. We've actually had good results printing the dragon using fdm, but a resin printer sure works well for those tiny details.
@@SomethingEpic The Wheat tiles did print better individually. It was when I tried to print all 6 at the same time that I had the error, so you may be correct about the slicing error. And, I'll add that the Dragon issues that I had were mostly due to support generation. And I will admit that I went fairly heavy on the supports.
Did you pack the thing? If yes how big is the box you nned for it? I wanna make a custom catan board, but i have not yet decided if 2d or 3d is the way togo, and one of the main points would probably be how much more space 3d would take
We have a plan for a custom box for it, but for now we are storing it in this wood box from Amazon that is 13.0"x9.4"x4.7". It's not too big at all and quite portable. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HF2K3KD/
I wonder how much filament was needed for all the parts. How much time it took to print it. And how long it took to paint them. Respect for the hard work, it turned out great!
Hi! Thanks for the compliment! With the settings we used, we estimate it takes a little less than 2KG of PLA (2 rolls). The time it takes is tough to say for sure, but with one printer on normal settings it would likely take a couple weeks to print them all (accounting for setup time, etc.).

Was deciding on printing this version or the other popular version out there, and decided on this one due to the great straight edges around the outside of the game board. In your video you mentioned that you edited the city/settlement to make them more distinct. Do you have the STL file for that? I agree that they are similar, but haven't gotten into modeling just yet.
I'm using the files y'all posted in patreon. The largest army trophy is an fbx file not an stl (I'm not a 3D artist just a guy that prints). It's too small to print. Could y'all please fix the largest army file? Pretty please?
quick question: In the video, you demonstrate the pause for adding magnets, and there are some nice time lapses showing the prints in gray filament. Later, you describe masking the edges so they remain black. The question is: are the tiles printed in gray or black? I am thinking probably black, and the video examples maybe are tests that are easier to see the contours under the given lighting? Anyway, I am about to buy filament, and the description shows black. . . so which is it?
We printed our set in black filament. The gray prints were only done in gray so they would be easier to see for the video. Of course, you could print them in any color and paint them black first, but I recommend printing them in black if you want the edges and bottom to remain black.

Crap, I'm about halfway through printing a set, but have never painted anything in my life. My wife and I are painting it as a summer project.
The vid showed more time painting, but they probably spent more time tweaking the models in the computer and setting things up for the printer.
