Porsche originally designed and started the development for a German motorcycle company, who dropped the project. Porsche was approached after Opel and Mercedes refused to design an affordable car for the masses, they believed only rich people should own cars, the masses should use public transport. If the British Army hadn't seen the appeal of the design, the factory wouldn't have been repaired and production restarted.

Near me there is a guy with a prototype beetle. An SS officer decided to keep one he was meant to test and write a report on and tried to migrate to Australia later. Think he might have been deported or arrested and the car was sold by the government. Anyway it's in great condition but the back seat was made using wooden board and very thin padding. More like a seat from an old bus than a car seat. It's quite different.
The prototype is in australia? Where? my dad had a very early beetle stolen from sunshine in victoria in the 60's. He had the motor out to swap it with a bigger one, and someone towed it from his parents side lawn overnight, a few months later he saw it registered and driving, someone had swapped the chassis with their own beetle so dad couldnt prove it was his...
The first , primitive & basic Volkswagens known as "KDF wagens" were a work of art ; both in asthetics & functionality......unfortunately , when Ben Pon brought the first few ' KDF wagens' to the United States ; that very first year he sold only two(2) in 1949.....and that was all it took for Americans to glam onto this simple yet, fun to drive and own Volkswagen Beetle type 1.....pretty soon after , the beetles 'siblings' would follow with the ' Kombi ' Transporter type 2 ( VW Bus) ; and then the Squareback & Fastback type 3 & the sporty Karmann Ghia .....and the Company offered other models worldwide.
I think you have read the book, Small Wonder from about 1965. The secret to VWs success in the US was the fact that it could be driven on the highways as it was designed to be driven on the autobahns. Building the autobahns and building a car that the Volk could drive on them went a long way to get people to approve of NSDAP policies. I grew up on VWs and between me and my parents and siblings we all must have owned 20 of them of all types except for the type 4. I never much cared for the water-cooled ones.
I bought a Mexican Beetle brand new in 2000. Fantastic car. The metal used in the Mexican Beetles were galvanized so they were much better to resist rust than the Wolfsburg ones. They also came with disc brakes, hydraulic lifters in the engine, and a security system installed before you could start it. Sadly, Volkswagen ceased production in 2004.
What's the dark side of Kdf-wagen? Because nazis made it? Do you know what KDF is? If you think nazis were so evil, saying that nazis made the car is the darkside, would make it a redundancy.
The whole Kdf-wagen project was a darkside to Nazi Germany itself. The entire project was riddled with corruption, the entire government-sponsored institution that was supposed to produce the car for the masses only managed to steal from the state coffers, so hardly any were produced, and, due to the war, all production of the thing ground to a halt, effectively ending what was an incredible money-wasting venture. Really, the Beetle only came into it's own after the war, when Volkswagen began to produce it, independent of the state.
Government-sponsored? VW was a branch of KDF and DAF which were part of the government. What does it make it corrupt? And where is it written that hardly any were produced? You know that the factory was finished short before the war.
Reportedly, a large sum of the funds meant for the project simply disappeared among the government agencies. A number of companies (Damlier-Benz, Zündapp and Porsche) had submitted their own ideas and prototypes for the project,. Beause of the war, only a handful (relatively speaking, in terms of the car industry) could be made, and while what had been produced was good quality, and distributed among the elite of the reich. The factory soon switched over to producing Kübelwagens. The real boom came after the war, when Volkswagen became and independent company. The KDF-wagen was an amiable, ambitious (in terms of desired numbers) project, that ultimately came to little fruition because of the war. It was the politically-choked predecessor of the Beetle, but not a success story in on it's own.
Its origin and the construction of its factory as part of a huge program by the nazis to modernize and motorize Germany (despite the lack of crude oil and petrol) . The nazis had a sub-organisation that acted as some mix of labour union ( without any labourers' rights) and social benefit body. People were encouraged to subscribe to that scheme to get their car when a certain amount of money had been paid into that scheme ( 5 Reichsmark per month). That organisation had the swastika within a toothed wheel at its logo. Around that toothed wheel was something that you may see as swirling swastika, expressing movement and joy. That explains the early VW logo with the two letters in its centre, the toothed wheel around and those swirling four arms further out. The factory though only produced a handful of "beetles" during the war, the model 41, the bulk was military off-roaders on a strengthened "beetle" chassis with bigger ground clearance, the famous "Kübel" or "vat/bucket", some were amphibious cars. All German war industries exploited the workforce of men and women that were either prisoners or had been kidnapped or pressganged into German service from ocupied countries. The original subscribers never saw their cars. Their subscription accounts were wothless in 1945. Ownership of the factory went from the naziparty into some kind of trusteeship under British command and from them to the state of Lower Saxony. Whatever happened to the firm later has always to be seen against the background of the Germans saying "it is ours, we put the money in to get it started in the first place".
That's a lame excuse not to like something, bet you're one of those religois nuts that boycott Hooters being on the same street as a church?!? Or won't buy from starbucks bc of their politics...

After WW2, the name KDF-wagen was gone, since the KDF-stiftung didn't exist anymore. So post war VW is irrelevant to this title.
