    It’s really nobody’s business who does most of the work. Any RUclipsr will tell you that recording and setting up cameras and lights, adds hours to any job. Thank you for taking the extra time to record this for us.

      It's not because of comments, we just wanted to mention it. Kyle tolerates being filmed some, but he also doesn't love having the camera pointed at him all the time, so I try to give him a break. It gives a bit of a skewed picture so we wanted to mention it.
      To keep from taking time away from the build, I just jump in and get whatever video I can and put it all together later. Thanks for watching! 😊

    Necessity is the Mother of invention. Nice watching the little house on the prairie coming along. In the UK you cannot build anything without a suitcase of legal documents - could you not use a sail needle and sew the wires to the bags using heavy sail thread.

    If you insert untreated wood in the bag, it could rot or attract termites. Treated wood would outgass as well. I would prefer recycled plastic panels, for example, or fiberglass. Or, scraps from bathtub or shower installs.

    You will find if you put in two screws about two to three inches apart it will give you a better drywall finish. Plus you don’t have to put them in every eight inches. Eight along each edge and just six down the center and your done. Drywallers usually work in pairs wearing aluminum stilts that attach to the leg. They lift the sheet up to the ceiling and put the screws in. It takes them about a minute to hang a ceiling panel or wall panel but are usually 12 foot long. Later

      We tried some screws and they didn't work at all, they got caught on the larger sand particles and stripped the hole out. Surprisingly nails or anything pounded in holds much better.

    are you going to build a wall in front of the door to slow down wind rain ?
    can you ask your son why he chose not to have two doors for fire escape ?

    • @RedandAprilOff-Grid
      @RedandAprilOff-Grid  Год назад

      We don't get a lot of rain here, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The roof overhang will also help block the rain.
      He just wanted to do what was easiest at the time, and we were too busy working on our house to give it much though. We definitely wish we would have recommended a second door. Fortunately not much in the house will be flammable, and the whole space will be open and accessible to the door.

    How is hyperadobe structural? Would rebar be applicable? Integrated stick framing? Besides the weight of itself, is what I'm asking

    • @RedandAprilOff-Grid
      @RedandAprilOff-Grid  Год назад

      The bags are filled with a damp clay rich soil, which is then tamped/compressed. The walls are similar to rammed earth. They dry very hard and are 18 inches thick.

  • @bobjoatmon1993
    @bobjoatmon1993 Год назад

    I've wondered on this build why you didn't increase the thickness of the roof insulation another layer or so? I ment to ask on a previous video but obviously didn't. Was it cost or a calculation that decided it?
    Also, FYI - Last year I helped a friend do some on his hyperadobe house in W Texas and (its too late for this build of yours but for future expansions...) what he did was embed electrical conduit between the layers as he built. He had a block of wood simulating each electrical box so when the walks are finished, the block gets replaced with the appropriate box and the wires are pulled.
    Nite that he's building his house one room at a time. Built the first one and moved in then built a second room, etc (I was there for the third room completion). He had a 20' cargo container that he built his first room right up against so eventually it will be totally embedded as part of the house which will be a mechanical n laundry / storage room but the end doors still give access to outside.

      That's what I thought too. More sound insulation on the ceiling, / because of the tin roof. But, they are in a warm desert were it don't rain. Cool nights and hot days.
      Should be alright with or without insulation.

    • @andrew-hf9fl
      @andrew-hf9fl Год назад +2

      True, but also some people really like the sound of rain on a metal roof

    • @bobjoatmon1993
      @bobjoatmon1993 Год назад +1

      @@missingremote4388 well, I want thinking of sound damping, I was thinking thermal insulation

    • @RedandAprilOff-Grid
      @RedandAprilOff-Grid  Год назад +2

      @@bobjoatmon1993Cost was a factor, and we decided with all of the thermal mass of the walls, the ceiling didn't need to be particularly well insulated. The summer should be pretty comfortable with just a fan bringing in the cool night air, and possibly an evaporative cooler.
      He won't be heating the house in the winter. It helps some, and can be done, but the walls would absorb most of the heat. It will be a bit cool in the winter, but much nicer than living in his unheated RV. (He has never bought any propane, and even takes cold showers 🥶.) The temperatures in his hyperadobe house should be quite livable and very stable. We are curious to see how well it does.
      That sounds like a neat build, and nice you got to be a part of it! 😎

      as a general contractor i can tell this much , no ventilation in the attic space will become an issue. In summer that attic WILL hit 160+ degrees, and will radiate heat indoors.
