I’m in a small town in Northern Ontario. I’ve been out more times than I can count in different areas trying to find these! We don’t have a local club for field trips and what not. If there any insight you can offer? I’m not sure if it’s something that can even be found in my area
One thought is to look at the maps on mindat. If yo google the name of your town plus mindat, it will take you to the known mineral occurrences in your surrounding area and you can expand your search from there. Let me know if that works for you
I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week.
@@meMiner Build a cheap building and use insulation and what cheap or used you can find to sound proof it, cover with planters full of flowers for your wife. If you start selling a 100 lbs per week of tumbled stones she might start to like the noise LOL
Are appetites only found in canada? I live in northwestern Illinois about 30 miles northwest of chicago. I love rock hounding and still trying to learn what everything is...I love your channel!
They are found worldwide, but of course not everywhere. You have a couple of mines in south Illinois that I am aware. One is called Alnoite vein near Salem, Illinois and a bit north of there is the Hicks Dome near Hicks, Illinois. I am not sure about access and how easy to find they are in these locations.
You must have a site to purchase some of your findings?!?! I get so antsy to hunt once the winter comes! My collections are lonely and would love some green appetite!
I collect for fun and don't have a business to sell. The problem that I see for rocks is it is too expensive to ship from or within Canada to make such a venture worthwhile.
It was one of my favorite videos to make. I went back to the spot and somebody cleaned it out completely. Maybe this year I will start a new hole and find something similar.
Is it easy to find appetite in Ontario? I would love to take a trip this summer and find some areas where I could find appetite. I’m trying to look for areas where I can find calcite near me to see what else is there it seems where there’s calcite there are other things. Is it true that calcite will be melted always by muriatic acid? Is that how I know it’s calcite and not Quartz?
Calcite. Quartz is not affected. Be aware that muriatic will also dissolve apatite. It won't affect titanite. So you have to know what is in the calcite that you want to keep and if it is affected by the acid. There are many places to collect apatite in Ontario. One centre of the right kind of host rocks is Bancroft and there are public collecting sites nearby. In fact, if you look up Bancroft Chamber of Commerce, you may find they have a organized collecting trip that you can join when you are here. Otherwise, probably one of the best public places for good quality large apatite is The Lost Mine near Eganville.
Hi I live in buffalo ny and I was wondering if you would be able to at least tell me the whereabouts of where you found all those? I have been looking for a new spot for a few months now to go searching
I don't have a business, so have no idea about value. I just enjoy collecting. As for colour they can also be white, yellow, brown, gray, pink, purple and blue. Some can be clear or multicolored. It just depends on the "contaminants".
I don't have a store and collect for fun. I like the idea of trades, but would have to wait until spring as my apatite are outside and blocked by snow/ice. Maybe reach out to me in the spring
I collect the crystals all over the world, and I dig up my own pieces, I have some which are very rare, any possibility that we change our contact info. Here or in messages,
I looked up on mindat what is in the local area and fluorapetite is a gem found near me. When looking for exposed calcite that is eroded does it look waxy and smooth? And are you digging before the exposed calcite where it once was?
Calcite vein is usually white to orange. It looks an awful lot like quartz, but is softer (can scratch calcite with a knife). When eroded, it it is usually dirty. I guess it can be waxy/smooth but that is easy to confuse with other minerals. Calcite can also be crystals. I am not sure that answer helped much. The best areas for me have a calcite cap and the loose crystals are in crevices or underneath the cap. You can usually find crevices because big tree roots also dig into them. Sometimes, you can find where the calcite as eroded because there is a depression in the ground or a line of trees growing in the vein dyke. If you have a steel rod, you will hit the sides just under the surface and the rod will push down thru the dirt at the opening. I should do a video on that. I like to dig where there is still some calcite so I get loose crystals around it plus have the chance of finding something whole that is still contained in the calcite. Calcite is quite difficult to break without destroying the crystals. It seems to flex under the chisel but the crystals don't flex.
Hey Greig, still hungry I see! Nice lot again, I see why you love it so much, that feeling when you uncover another one or a bigger one, what a rush. Very fragile though, unfortunately, such a shame when nature reclaims them they just crumble away and the beauty is lost. Those potatoes are more my thing, I can make something out of those, not the clusters just the plain fat ones I can trim and re facet to a symmetrical shape and uniform size, will they flatten smooth like obsidian? send some my way and I will gift you something in return. I missed Daisy this time or was she snapping at bugs again. Stay safe and watch out for those flying bugs they can kill you to death.
meMiner Ok, I will have to wait until you have a change of appetite, lol The material I use doesn't need to be a 10 or even an 8 , obviously the softer it is the more delicate it will be but in the same respect a hard mineral is just as if not more delicate depending on how brittle it is. Providing the surface will finish and take a polish without flaking away or crumbling like its been exposed and weathered then it's all good. Laminated sections are cushioned to avoid crushing casualties when tightening the pommel as I don't put an overly amount of trust in glue
That’s awesome. My fantasy. I love watching your videos when I need to relax. Between your energy and your voice and your amazing finds it really helps.

That 16 minutes flew by right fast. Love the Apatite, truly beautiful specimens, but once I saw that humongous hornblende, (and bit of K-spar) the suspense kicked in on what else you could find...Olivine? Spinel? Glad you found and shared that awesome pocket.
There are many other minerals in this area. Not always in quantity or perfect form, but they are there to be found.

Nope. I am sure it would be ideal for showing crystals like this.
Time to find me some Apetite i keep rewatching this video
It was one of my favorite videos to make. I went back to the spot and somebody cleaned it out completely. Maybe this year I will start a new hole and find something similar.
@@meMiner that would be an awesome series, Id watch each episode.
I may be out there this weekend with Daisy. I will have a video camera with me for sure.
hi, meminer, that's nice appetite crystals.do you do trading?
It's raining apatite!
My favorite kind of rain. ;-)
Wouldn't it be faster to utilize a hand sifter? I have one that is about the size of a round cake pan that would be perfect for this.
Oops, finish watching before commenting is not my strength. That embedded crystal is a beauty!!
Thanks!
Those are some pretty good finds! Keep it secret, keep it safe... There may be even more hidden around there.
You are correct. There is no point posting "X-marks the spot" for a small pocket like this. It would get cleaned out in no time.
Hi I live in buffalo ny and I was wondering if you would be able to at least tell me the whereabouts of where you found all those? I have been looking for a new spot for a few months now to go searching
It would be a bit of a hike for you, but doable for a weekend trip. Near Bancroft Ontario which is east of Toronto.
Thank you so much
Nice indeed.. too bad you don't have a specimins for sale page or an eBay account. Torture :p but it's always a good show :)
This is a hobby that I do for fun. There are others who sell what they find.
Can you find good appetite crystals in the smart mine? Also what is better the smart mine or the lost mine?
Nice apatite there. Both mines are good and side by side. I have done better at the Smart, but would still be happy if I could only go to the Lost.
Please tell me what there worth or used for ...do you make jewelry..what please
Some of the nicer crystals were wire wrapped for jewelry. Clusters are on a shelf. I love the look of the crystals in a bowl.
Is the Appetite worth anything, what’s the difference between the green and the red
I don't have a business, so have no idea about value. I just enjoy collecting. As for colour they can also be white, yellow, brown, gray, pink, purple and blue. Some can be clear or multicolored. It just depends on the "contaminants".
"LOOK---AT---THAT....."
How fare up north are you? I'm in northern lower Michigan.
I sure would like to head up your way 😊
This was eastern Ontario outside of Bancroft. It is a nice drive from MI
@@meMiner yeah that is quite a drive from here. I am located about the middle knuckle of the ring finger.
Probably better for you to drive north. There is some great collecting on both sides of the border along Lake Superior.
Hi, Anywhere to buy one solid crystal from your location, or we can change for something from mine, also vary rare. Thanks
Here or in messages,
@@MoomeIslamovich my email is meminerrocks@gmail.com
Hi. What country. Never seen come out ground before wow
Do you sell please.
I don't have a store. I do this for fun
meMiner could you send me one i make healing oils ?
How do you find apetite is it in dirt mostly? I hear I can find it on Vancouver Island same with tourmalines
Lots of fallen trees by my house too
Where I go, it is mostly in calcite. When the calcite erodes, there will be loose crystals in the dirt.
@@meMiner please do a video that! You are extremely knowledgeable I would like to meet you someday!
My beautiful Channel and tou muito love
Thanks so much.
I'm mad because i cant get apatite or any really Nice gemstones where i live:'(
Hope you can find a local spot with some research for good crystal nearby. Otherwise, it is a fun vacation to travel...
Daisy was there with me. I think the black rock is too soft for your purpose.
meMiner
Ok, I will have to wait until you have a change of appetite, lol
The material I use doesn't need to be a 10 or even an 8 , obviously the softer it is the more delicate it will be but in the same respect a hard mineral is just as if not more delicate depending on how brittle it is.
Providing the surface will finish and take a polish without flaking away or crumbling like its been exposed and weathered then it's all good.
Laminated sections are cushioned to avoid crushing casualties when tightening the pommel as I don't put an overly amount of trust in glue
What do the ones you call the potato look like inside
black inside. No features.
Cool thank you
