    My tip regarding gearboxes is to try to put them in series rather than in parallel, with each set of gears getting power from the last set. Something that I didn't immediately get right away but I think is definitely is helpful is that it is possible to get power out of a shifter in reverse which could also simplify things.
    When you start experimenting more, it helps to have a sort of temporary rig setup, all you need is for every part to be connected, and a single suspension and wheel of your choice to be able to see the power curves. If you find a design you like you can then experiment with shrinking the mechanism as far as you can before building it into your new car.

    For each gear shifter, you should start in a 1 to 1 and then shift into high to low, which will keep a lot of your torque, which will make the graph more gradual instead of abruptly dropping.
    By transitioning from low to high into high to low, you force it to switch from high torque with low speed to low torque with high speed. If you want a good optimized gear shifting setup you need to be more gradual with the change.
    Big Gear > Small Gear = High Speed/Low Torque
    Medium Gear > Medium Gear = Average
    Small Gear > Big Gear = Low Speed/High Torque
    So your first shifter should change from Small>Big into Medium>Medium.
    Then the second shifter should change from Medium>Medium into Big>Small.
    That will cause a gradual increase, allowing for a better transition from low speed to high speed.
    After that if you want increase you top speed further you can use some of the more dramatic shifters. Small>Big into Big>Small.
    Due to already having a gradual step before the transmission, it will automatically pick the smoothest gear changes, but those first 2 shifters are absolutely critical for maintaining acceleration.

    Note to have while playing screw drivers:
    1) Each motor will give you some energy, the more HP the more energy you have to use for speed or acceleration
    2) speed and acceleration are Inversely proportional, the more top speed you have less acceleration you obtain and more acceleration less top speed
    3) by Taking into consideration the point 2 you need to have multiple ration of gears to have the most acceleration in the speed you go, so the curve needs to be a ramp that goes down and not stairs that go down
    (Edit) 4) look at the stats of the engines, electric engine goes from 4500rpm to 5000rpm while combustion engine goes from 5000rpm to 5500rpm so when the combustion engine reaches 5000rpm they can go more but the electric engine will shut down and end you up with less energy to move the car, consecutive less top speed and less acceleration

    17:14 Scrapman, I think you can accomplish this with 2 gearshifts. You can have all your power translate into the first gearshift and have the second gearshift drive the output shaft (so 2 gearshifts, 4 gears each).

    • @promethium968
      @promethium968 19 дней назад

      actually, this will only give you 3 interchangeable gear ratios, sorry. My idea is that the gearshifts would be placed opposite eachother to give you the maximum range of interchangeability, so see if you can get 4 out of it, but I think 3 will be your maximum. The only way I can envision you getting 4 ratios out of this is if you can activate both gearshifts at the same time as well.

    Scrapman overcomplicating the 3-speed transmission is hilarious, easily one of my favorite creators to watch on youtube. It's possible to do what he's doing with only two of the gearshift 2s. Spoiler on how to fix his issue alert, the problem he's facing is solved by having both gears start at gear one in default position, after that one needs to have the 2nd gear and the other has the 3rd gear. Been considering making one of those steam guides with everything I've learned so far.

    Major props to your editor for inspiring something in this game. It's fun to see when the little things go noticed. So regardless of it being under your name, Scrapman, I'm giving the credit to your editor. You were just the vehicle for their work. However, due to this amount of influence, I kind of half expect there to now be a Scrapman Gear to show up in the game at some point. Great ratio, but if you run it too fast.........."DELAYED ANNIHILATION!!!!!" Or a Scrapman button. You just keep pressing it to see what it does and every time your reset/repair/or respawn your vehicle, it randomly connects to something different on your vehicle.

    That hinge connector is good for making a turning assist using the weight blocks, just mount it vertically and set the engine to A and D with a weight block attached. The weight when it turns will impart a turning torque to the vehicle. If a large enough weight is used you can turn even if you forgot to set the wheels to steerable. We never do that though. 😅

    You can use the Shifters sequentialy. So if you have 3 in a row, you can have 6 gears.
    The last one being the one with small and medium gear
    Second is a large gear to medium
    And third is a large gear to small
    And if u really wanted u could add another in between with medium to medium
    But that would result in 8 gears😅
    Anyway if the drive is connected to the next shifter it will see them as connected even if they float coming from an axle.
    A youtuber named Woody made a good gearbox with this method.

  • @Noobaryaa
    @Noobaryaa 19 дней назад

    You can connect gear shifts in line, so that the + shaped rod of one shifter ends in the input of another shifter. Then the 2nd shifter has 2(/3) gears and the first one would just transfer the rotation in its "first gear" and when shifting it would pull out of the 2nd shifters input to disconnect that and at the same time move a gear in place to get whatever ratio you want it to have.
    Your gears don't have to be in 1, 2, 3... order, the automatic shifters will detect the ratios in every position and know when to shift. Also sometimes that detection does weird stuff so you end up with more or less gears than you've built. For example my car has two 3 gear shifts connected in line which would give me 5 gears. Then the output has a 2 gear shift, one goes straight to the wheels and the other has a planetary gear before connecting to the wheels. This basically doubles the first 5 gears as they work in either position of the last shifter, effectively giving me 10 gears. But somehow the car has 18 gears xD (Tip: You can switch to manual shifting in the settings. Then spawn wherever and manually shift while standing to see what your shifters actually do.)
    Btw the downforce works depending on the rotation of the spoilers. I had tons of downforce when doing the final long jump and I rotated my vehicle upside down as soon as I went off the ramp and I could basically fly so I got over 400m on that jump.
    -last played before the most recent update so idk if anything changed already (like the gear detection)

  • @dragade101
    @dragade101 11 дней назад

    I'm sure someone has said this. You can layer vertically. So maybe in a two layer design (layerA and layerB), the lower layerA will have your drive shaft and motors. LayerB will take gearing. That layerB then transfers energy back into layerA, for your wheels.
    This can be more compact in ways while helping weight distribution.

  • @tombroad9239
    @tombroad9239 19 дней назад

    For the shifters, place them in series instead of in parallel.
    Place the second shifter on the axle being powered indirectly (through gears) by the first.
    Consider your ratios carefully though. There are some wasteful combinations you'll want to avoid.
    I'd use something like S:M, M:S on one and then S:L, L:S on the other. It results in 4 completely different ratios. (1:15, 3:5, 5:3, 15:1)
    Pro tip: Run through all the gear combos in your head. It's easy to miss some redundancies, like if you have a 1:5 followed by a 5:1. That alone isn't always a waste, but if you already have a designated 3:3 straight conversion, then it is.

  • @roccov3614
    @roccov3614 19 дней назад

    My tips:
    1. If your gas and electric engines are of equivalent power you can have them on the same shaft but in this case your electric engine was way more powerful than the gas one, even though the gas one had more top speed. You could have geared up the electric engine before merging with the gas engine to increase it's top speed at the cost of it's power, bringing it inline with the weaker gas engine. I think that would have resulted in a smoother graph.
    2. The way I understand using 2 gear shifters is, you have power going into one gear shifter that interacts with a second static shaft, then you have a second shifter interact with the static shaft. The output comes out of the rear end of the second shifter. I think the game has issues if you try to drive your wheels from the tip of the shifter. You are supposed to pull power off the back. Of course there are many ways to do gearing.

  • @ap0llo.0ne51
    @ap0llo.0ne51 19 дней назад

    My recommendation is to make the most of the big electric engines, have two shafts on either side of the vehicle centre line running from the front to the back with two electric motors on each end, and sufficient combustion engines and electric motors on each shaft, make sure to use the smaller ones too! Have it so the gearbox is inbetween the two shafts, and have a seperate output shaft route back to the front wheels to ensure that the car is all wheel drive! Looking from above the shafts would kinda look like 三, top is powered shaft 1, bottom is powered shaft 2, middle is AWD drive shaft above the gearbox.
    For the gearbox I’d also recommend to basically have one simple gearbox into another, so basically like a two speed gearbox into another two speed gearbox if you understand, resulting in a four speed transmission

    Once you get the three shifter and radial gears, it will be much easier to make those middle parts have better torque. You can make a wing/spolier with tilt with the hinge connectors for top speed with downforce and stopping power with wind resistance. Also the dirt suspension is perfect with very good at high speeds if you have enough downforce as it will allow you to make much sharper turns with at wheels on the ground at all times. I love that you are making videos of this game. It reminds me so much of lego technic that I used to play with as a kid :)

    I think in the game like this you should be able to save your own pre built parts for example a gearbox so you don't have to built it 30 times for different vehicles

  • @Lexoka

    For The Long Straight, downforce mostly hurts you because it also adds drag. The only benefit is that it pushes you down so you have a bit more grip and you're less likely to spin, but it only really does that after you reach a certain speed, where you're not likely to spin anyway. Chances are that you'd be a bit faster without it. Plus, you'd save some weight, which is good for acceleration.
    As for gear shifts, even without the triple shifter, you can simply chain the double shifter. It's hardly space-efficient (or mass-efficient), but it works.

    a little note for vehicle destruction, you don't HAVE to destroy them, just pin them, either by flipping them, or wedging yourself underneath to get their wheels off the ground. Since the mission really only cares about whether or not it can still move, you just have to keep it from moving as you saw with the cliff.

    At 17:42, your small to big and big to small are okay on the bottom side (from this angle). On the top side, use the big gear on the left (the same one in the middle that disconnects from the bottom side) to become your medium to big. Then, you can easily use the far right area for the Big to medium (which should engage when both the top and mid shifters are activated.)
    This would give you 4 gears, but you'll still have a gap if you don't have a 1:1 in there, probably won't be too bad.
    25:07 I'm not exactly sure how it works out but when you use a bunch of different engines on different axis sometimes the game seems to figure out that it's worth going back on gears to maximize your power. Like if your next gear has really high torque it might switch to it early, then switch back because you get more from the higher RPM of the previous one, and then back up again when that one reaches its top speed. Those are counted as extra "gears" because it seems to count every time it switches anything as a new gear. Usually those switches end up being pretty subtle, you couldn't even see your 2nd gear here,

    17:40 What you're trying to do doesn't *require* the 3-gear shifter (I think), but your whole premise is an overly complex solution, which makes fitting he 4th gear in there more complex than it has to be.
    19:30 That's because you eliminated the middle-high gear, where you'd have been better off eliminating the middle-low gear.

    Scrapman, start by putting the medium gear on the engine, follow it with the large gear, and make certain that the small gear is directly on the drive shaft. You will get good acceleration and better top speed.

    To use multiple shifters, I find it easier to run them sequentially... So one set of gears is on the output shaft of one shifter and the input of the other...
    You can also use the shifters "backwards" - where the input shaft shifts and the output shaft is static...

  • @sirsapphire3499
    @sirsapphire3499 19 дней назад

    I mentioned it last video, but a good way to utilize multiple gear shifts is a neutral axle.
    Have an axle that isn't powered, and receives power from one gear shift's axle, and outputs to a different gear shifter's axle.
    Then, the first can give power to the neutral axle at 2 different ratios, and the second gear shifter can accept the power that the neutral axle is giving it at 2 different ratios.

  • @treasure9068
    @treasure9068 19 дней назад

    Tip the 2 gear shifter is good for vehicles with tight turns and the bigger one is useful for less turns. Also make sure you have even weight distribution on your vehicle or it pulls to 1 side and it's not your engine causing that problem

  • @sidezerk9790
    @sidezerk9790 19 дней назад

    for making the gear box, u dont have to stay on on axis, u can make it vertically (big gear into small like 5 times) with the input from the bottom and output traveling from the top back to the wheels!

  • @mathieularocque1953
    @mathieularocque1953 19 дней назад

    For the gear box, a good way to do it is to line your engine / motor then they go to an axel that transfers to a shifter then you axel the shifter to another shifter (back to back) then it transfers to the axel that goes to the wheel, this way you get 4 speed transmission depending on the engine you use you can change the ratio...
    Also the ratio are not based on the number of teeth the gears have... So the ratio can get math this way...

    At 18:00 you were so close to getting the gears working. On the far side axis would put a medium gear where the large central gear moves back to, and on the right end switch the medium and large years, so large on far side, medium in centre, and it would've given you 4 gears

    The easiest way to do the "destory opponent" ones is to just hold them in place. The knockout timer will start if they are moving too slowly. (Like below 1 kph).
    If you get underneath them by smashing into them, you can take their wheels off the ground and stop them from moving.

    Try placing the gearshifters on opposite sides, so one slides in one and one in the other direction.
    It has more liablility than placed in the same direction, you could also ad gearshifts on top, but you should also be able to get the gearshift 3 soon

    I think you could create a three gear shift using the basic gear shifter, using two axles that both move, and using a small gear first, and when it shifts the small gear is not big enough to engage, so it can hang over the other gear
    It's hard to explain in words

  • @postscript1561
    @postscript1561 19 дней назад

    Keep in mind that the gear shifters do not need to be on the same horizontal plane as the axis.
    The engines and shifting components can be a level higher instead. (Maybe even diagonal from the main axle)
    You could even have it perpendicular.

    Constructive tips:
    -Try not using your new green electric engine, its trash.
    -Try using verticality for your gearboxs to save space
    -Big wheels means higher top speed but lower acceleration
    -Downforce is always more speed, though it doesn't show you the speed in your stats
    -Try making full symmetry in your cars, cause it will be harder to perfectly centralize your center of mass (that was the cause of why your car were turning to the right lightly) (though, super high torque can turn your car (you need like 10k for 1 ton, so don't worry).
    -Try not aim the supersonic, cause its just unatteignable with just engines (propellers is one of the way)
    -If you want a blocky vehicle thats midly performant, try building outside in, first the outer beams then the suspensions+wheels and then the whole gearbox, its an easy but lazy way
    -But with that, if you make 2 axles along the beams, its an efficient way to make a either a 1 gear all wheel drive, or a good double gearbox
    -Try not to combine too many gearboxes, it would be a lag generator (not during the races but by loading the car)
    -CENTRALIZE YOUR MASS CENTER, its responsible for sooooo many things in races, you must prioritize it.
    Thats all Piror, the mild expert ; demo-lover ; tester had to say for construction ;)

    Please try adding a electric motor in between each set of med-small gears. A bit of a hint on gear shifting use gear shifters directly across (pointing at each other) to add a bit of compactness to your gear box

    you should probably take a look at lego engine videos... pretty helpful when it comes to figuring out how to make a gearbox and how they operate!
    (especially considering this game is pretty simillar to legos in general if you ask me)

  • @toddabbott781
    @toddabbott781 19 дней назад

    Can you make a weapon with that rotating part? Think of a row of spinning armor blocks in the front of your vehicle attached to a large electric motor... very messy. Have it spit so it kicks them up. Then add some armor plates around, maybe some weight if needed... and protect those tires. Just make these mods only for the demolition races. Do the tires have collision when they turn or when the suspension compresses? You might be able to squeeze armor right up against the tires.
    You are making some weird decision that are just over complicated. Do 2 engine shafts that combine into one with a large electric and as many gas engines as you can fit (6-8 on each shaft likely). This would be something like 2 large electric and possible 16 gas engines (a V16 hybrid). You might not even need that extra electric connected to the drive axels with this much power. Then do a gear reduction then a shifter, then a second shifter. If you really need it you can add a third, but this would only be for something like breaking the sound barriers as you will likely not be able to reach much higher in a race.
    You might also think about the upgraded suspension and doubling up you wheels to improve grip and acceleration (even with the larger wheels). You can put the downdraft on the servos to work as air breaks... or act as lift when jumping (not sure if this would work but worth a try). These two things together should give you crazy grip and acceleration and still be able to do jumps. Downforce does likely lower your top speed so do not use it for testing something like reaching the speed of sound. Also is there any aerodynamics other than downforce? Do they have wedges for the front?
