Aquatic Plants for sale: danielhiteshew@gmail.com
I learned over the years that under stocked tanks are so much easier to maintain parameter wise. Plus adding more plants also helps. If I want more or different types of fish I can set up another aquarium. And btw I don't think your 20 gal. tank is over stocked😁
Under is always better than over when it comes to stocking, no doubt.
This won't work with African cichlids. I must overstocked the tank so i have less fights
All these fish are producing waste, this plays a part within the tank size, less oxygen also. If the nitrates are low, then keep as many as possible for the tank size
The tank look bigger than 20 gal.
Definitely the best explanation I’ve heard. Thanks for clearing that up!
Thanks for getting the word out. I use aqadvisor, which doesnt do the 1 inch per gallon, but rather bioload and space.
Filtration capacity and water change routine make all the difference in acceptable fish density in any size aquarium
this is the best explanation on the subjekt that I have ever heard! and I watched many videos about overstocking . . . Thank you 🤗
Pushing the boundaries in a tank can be more easily done if you spend a lot of time watching the tank and the behavior of the fish by having the tank in a room that you spend most of your time in so you can easily spot even the slightest problem such as aggression or unusual behavior.
Oversizing your filtration and having a good turnover rate are great too. I shoot for 6x in my 125g Silver Dollar/Veiltail Oscar community tank and 4x in my 56g planted angel tank. Both are tied to a single sump for a 200g total volume.
Adding Catappa leaves in a high flow sump will quickly up the level of mulm as will having a lot of driftwood that the plecos chew on and eat. Fast growing Amazon Swords create a ton of mulm as the oldest leaves underneath disintegrate.
Since connecting the tanks together and adding the Catappa leaves all of my Silver Dollars started breeding after having had them for over 4 years with no prior breeding behavior. I found babies in the sump.
That's exciting! I've never even seen my display spawning behavior (that I know of).
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly They go from silver to black on their bodies and fins. All of them get wound up at the same time and there will be 2, 3 and 4 of them lined up side by side shaking their bodies into each other. I posted a video of them doing it.
It does disrupt the harmony of the tank and they have no interest in their food when it happens. It usually lasts for a couple of hours and they have been doing it every week now.
I'll keep the two smaller than a dime sized babies I found in the sump but I really didn't plan on keeping more of these once they reached the end of their lifespan.
Love how you broke this down. It's exactly how I think when stocking. I find it so ludicrous that people think they can always tell if a tank is overstocked by looking at it. Sometimes you could have a lot of fish but lots of plants or do lots of water changing. As long as fish have room you can't use silly rules like 1 inch per gallon
I had over 100 guppies (adults, teens, fry) in a heavily planted 10 gallon tank. They all strived.
Fish math is just wild lol. Before my 55g got ich I had about 37 fish and the tank ran perfect. Now I have around 26 of mostly different stock and it gets a lil algae lol. Research and experience is just key in this hobby.
Look into getting a UV sterilizer for the algae growth!
I have a 30 gallon community tank with 40 fish i dont believe im overstocked my bioload can keep up i do gravel vaccums every week or sooner the water changes come with the cleaning at least 1-2 8 gallon buckets full its mostly live bearers and school fish xray tetras glo tetras guppys mollies danios 1 gourami 1 8 inch common pleco(we will move her into a pond) swordtails and platys everyone is happy healthy having babys and getting along i even have a female betta in there no issues as long as you can keep up with it and your fish arent bumping into eachother just living i think your good
Best explanation! Thank you!!
Very helpful video ❤
Sir I have a planted 10g and have 3 guppies,1homey gourami,2 platies,2 otocinclus and I have maybe more guppies on the way is that overstocked?
I'd say your at the limit. Keep on top of maintenance and you should be ok.
Perfection! 🫶🏽
I split my tank in layers… top, mid, and bottom. I’ll pick a species or 2 for each layer n fill it bit by bit. I’ll keep an eye and adjust accordingly. But I mainly try to not overwhelm one of the tiers as that section could become “overstocked”.
Beautiful video. Have a nice day.
Great video, I totally agree. 👍
Thanks, Dan.
I currently have an understocked tank! One betta in a 10 gallon tank, with nothing else. I mean, plants, of course, but no other animals. I was thinking of some small type of shrimp like cherry shrimp, or some snails, my betta is too old and slow for anything that might get nippy with it, only the most peaceful tank mates are an option at this point, but then bettas like water on the acidic side (my tank ranges from 6.6 to 6.8), while things with shells or exoskeletons like water that is basic, so it doesn't seem like a good idea to put them both in the same tank. Now I need some other ideas...
Something like a rubber lip pleco or bristlenose would work in a 10, and not bother a betta at all.
I have a 29 heavy planted tank with 6 panda garra, 3 german blue rams, 10 otos, 2 guppies a pair, one juvi male wonder killi, one baby mustery snail two nerites, 6 corys, some ram and pond snails. Tank is tested once a week I keep a journal and will go to zero if I don't fert. Tons of hornwart, anubias, water lettuce a tidal 55, a hyyger double sponge filter with biomedia val and lots of crypts mulmy gravel bottom capped with a good 2 maybe 3 inches of sand. So far so good but I've been trying to not overstock it its been peacefully going along no issues as of yet I keep a journal and test weekly to see what my plants need as I also have TONS of duckweed pothos and salvinia also have lots of Java fern crypts val and pinto ridleyi 😅 thoughts? I don't plan on adding more accept the one female guppy to make it a 2 female 1 male trio. I feel like it's a full house but I have population control through the killi and I let the Cory's eat the eggs for now till I get another tank. It's been going solid for about a year or more Crystal clear water but if I sent fert even with the amount of fish the plants suffer.
If it's balanced and working, I say it's doing fine. I have no idea how tanks go down to zero nitrate. mine certainly don't do that. Lol
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly I think it's the shear amount of pothos hornwart and floaters I have lol on top of my numerous other water feeders
Ended up going through the same considerations you explained. Spend several weeks/month checking different fish that could work with my ‘bioload’ and ended up with 6 black neons who now peacefully occupy the higher parts of my tank. Will continue to monitor parameters the coming weeks although I expect no issues.
Preach
The important parameter is the volume of the fish body, not it's length. 10 inches of neons is NOT equivalent to a single 10 inch fish, the latter has a far higher body volume.
I have 7 plants and 11 small fish in my 10 gall is that okay I have one Betta and 4 neon 4 mollies and 1 Cory they all are fine whit each other and I have a lot of tall hiding plants too
Sounds fine to me.
I'm quite new to fish keeping and this was a helpful video. I honestly think my 12 gallon bookshelf is overstocked. The reason I say that is because my filter media gets absolutely filthy in 3 to 4 days. I do a 50% water change every week and a gravel vac every week or two but my two sponge filters and my HOB filter are absolutely filthy. I'm very anal so I stay on top of it but through some circumstances, i.e. my kids buying me fish, lol, I believe I have too many and will just wait for some of them to die off. Until then, I will stay diligent in my maintenance. I just don't want two tanks to maintain. I will add that I have only nano fish and there are 16 fish which probably isn't terrible but I still think it's too many based on how dirty my filtration gets.
If you feed a bit less, you'll have less stuff to clog your filters.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Funny you mentioned that. I really believe I underfeed as opposed to overfeeding. My husband always says he doesn't think I'm giving enough but they all look healthy. I've watched enough RUclips videos to know that overfeeding can be a real problem.
A aggressive fish may not be over stocked many people in the child branch. Thinks that it is then better to stock some more and spread out that aggression.
So maybe with a aggressive fish it may be understocked..🤔🥰😍💕
I try to go by the 1" rule, but I found that you get territory aggression. Got that going on in my 55g with 4 angelfish. Thinking about another 4. What do you think?
I stopped trying to keep more than one in a tank, so I'm not sure what to tell you.
@kyle Thompson angels are cichlids and the best way to keep cichlids with each other is to over stock you can definitely do other 4 angelfish.
I'm guessing that the one inch per gallon was started by people who sell aquariums. Or maybe the shop owners can't fix stupid. 🤔
Love the videos.
Most of those probably could be summed up to fish having good quality of life but id separate that with biological capacity/maintenance because in a lot of fish rooms people have auto water changing set ups so even if they have a bare bottom with a small sponge filter and constant dilution the fish are fine.
Nice One Dear. This is impressive la
I keep a goldfish in a long 10 gallon and it's fine. I add bottled bacterias weekly with water changes.
did you experienced with missing tetras in your tank?
I think you hit it on the head. It depends on the various circumstances. If you were a novice it would probably be on the side of being overstocked. But someone with long-term experience like you who knows how to monitor parameters, aggression and growth (and has the means to deal with the angelfish should it get too big) can make it work, so it doesn't appear to be on the side of overstocked under those circumstances.
The rule is probably a guide for less experienced fish keepers since most people have kept fish and most of them werent serious, so they wont put too much effort in understanding how to keep fish properly
I have a 75 gallon with 12 tiger barbs, one rainbow, one bala and 5 golden barbs it’s pretty heavily planted was wondering if this was to much I’m waiting for my plants to get more established but been curious about this have had small aquariums before but this this my first over 20 gallon tank and wanted to see opinions
If needed I have a second to break up and move some fish new to the hobby so not to sure
Sounds ok, but the bala shark can get very large eventually.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly he is planned to go into that second tank once I have it setup and ready he is a baby right now
I have a 10 Gal, with 13 Green Jade Shrimps, 2 snails and 1 otocinclus...
I want to add 6 Golden Ring Danios and maybe a puffer fish.
The tank is well planted, java moss and ferns with logs and eough space still... How do you see it?
Puffer will eat the shrimp.
So I am probably not over stocked by most standards… but I feel my tank is busy.. everyone hangs at the lower 50% tank level. Deffo too many algae eaters
Hiiiiiiiii please read!
I have a 10 gallon planted tank with 2 sister bettas (YES I KNOW IM A TERRIBLE PERSON) they were bred together and in a tank with a bunch of other females at the pet store. So I took 2 home! They’re fine. I also have 12/14 honestly I can’t remember rasboras.
My tank is “over stocked” by the rule but the fish have plenty of room and tons of plants. I believe I’m following YOUR idea of a healthy tank. I do weekly water changes and check my water parameters. Do you have any advice????
If you aren't having any issues, I'd just keep doing what you're doing. It sounds fine to me.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly you have any input on glass surfing? My parameters are fine but most of the rasboras keep glass surfing by the filter
@@aarenlindsey3080 They may just enjoy it. I have fish that surf the currents or ride the air bubbles.
Keep an eye on it. they may be a bit cooped up too.
I always give my fish room to swim ( that’s just me ) I feel like I’m abusing the animal otherwise
Your back to mono sound on this one.
I have a 55 g, with 4 dal mollies, 4 panda mollies, 3 guppies, 2 snails, 2 dwarf guorami, and 2 lacy synodontis. Aqadvisor said its overstocked and was think of rehoming on of my lacies. Then my 10 gal nursery had a failure and had to move 4 adolescent mollies and a loach into my 55 gal. But everyone seems happy, so weird behavior. Do you think im ok leaving them be?
Yes, I'd leave them alone. Look at my 55 gallon "gourami tank" and you'll see a heavily stocked 55. Lol yours is fine.

How many prisoners can you fit in a prison cell? 2 would be satisfactory however you could fit 12 it just wouldn’t be comfortable
I had a hard time hearing you Dan I thought my volume was low but it wasn’t.
Filtration Filtration Filtration...
The audio is super low I have it at full blast and barely hear you
You hit this on the head!
