    Thank you for this video. this was a Howard Johnson with a Thomas motor inn. Around 1983, it closed. Then it reopened as a independently own motor inn. I don't remember the exact name of the inn. The restaurant was called Eat at joes. They both closed in the early 1990's. I Remember this Howard Johnson very well. When I was a child, My family often ate at the Howard Johnson's on Friday for the fish and clams. I also have found memories stopping to eat a bowl clam chowder on the way to shopping town mall in Dewitt and after an afternoon of shopping, making a return stop for ice cream! I have fond memories of this restaurant of and motor inn and was saddened to watch it become an eyesore. Thank you for recording this.

    On a recent trip from Maryland to Florida, my brother and I stayed at a Howard Johnson motel in Florence, South Carolina that was at exit 164 just off of Route 95. While the outside looked like it was from the 1960's, the rooms inside looked brand new, with sort of an art deco theme. We have stayed at several other motels at this same exit over the years, and it was the nicest and cleanest one by far. The rate was good also at $63 plus tax using the AARP card. The only negative was that it is very close to train tracks, and we heard one train just after midnight.

    I just read a newspaper article about Howard Johnson's- there are only two remaining- and one of them in Maine is closing soon. The only location left is in Lake George NY. Very sad- this is another piece of Americana that's going away. The restaurant was famous for Clam Chowder and Ice Cream.

      @@doug9066 They do, but it's not the original one that they had years ago. It disappeared when they put the interstate through there. I stayed there one night when I was in the Air Force and was headed to Reese AFB (now closed). This was in 82-83. I left in 89 and I'm not sure if it was still there at the time.

    Back in the early 1970's my dad began working for HoJo's. [[Howard Johnson's]]. I began going to work with him around age 8 as he was a single dad. I began working by age 9. Dishwasher, prep [[peeling potatoes and such]]. I worked with my dad at HoJo's till the mid 1980's when we shut down the last remaining Hojo's in Texas. I still have some of the plates with the Hojo Pie and icecream Man designs-those were from before my time, by my time they had gone to painted rings on the edges of the plates, then as the Father-to-dson to selling out to some British corporation then to someone else progressed and the place was failing they went to plain China. Anyway, wish I could see the place-lot of memories including something myself and some waitresses did in the walk-in refridgerater when I was a teen. ;)

    Happy you guys got there and filmed both the Howard Johnson and the Gas station because they nocked both them down a couple months ago. As of now while I’m typing this, There building a Version store where the Gas Station was. Where the Howard Johnson was, the lot still sits vacant. From the rode I can see they never took down the light poles and the Howard Johnson sign border on the pole out front. From what I can see the pool fence is still there so I think the pool might still be there to. Great Video Guys!

    Ace- I will be completely honest... At first I though you were nothing but a Dan Bell rip off reminded me of McDowell's in Coming to America but I have come to appreciate and respect your work and am a fan- as someone else mentioned it is important that these places and malls are documented before they are gone so you are doing great work that will only become more significant as time passes. Thank you sir and I look forward to your future work.

      The Lake George HoJo is the last HoJo *restaurant*. The motel chain was split off from the restaurants in the mid-1980s when the Mariott Corporation bought them from Howard Jr. and wanted to turn all the restaurants into Big Boys. The restaurant owners balked and formed their own association to continue with the HoJo name but over time they couldn't keep up the good fight and one by one they all disappeared in the mid-90s to early 2000s. Now Lake George (which was never part of a motel) is the only one left and its days may be numbered.

    they said on the news that they're fighting to tear this place down. If the owner doesn't tear it down then the town of do it will have to tear it down themselves. It's a big losing battle locals want it torn down but the owner doesn't want it torn down I think doesn't want to pay to tear it down. they say it's an eyesore and they want to put something else in its place

    • @technologyproductions-ye3px
      @technologyproductions-ye3px 7 лет назад

      Lucas Nencetti why wouldn't the owner want to fix it

    • @sanges99
      @sanges99 6 лет назад +1

      technology productions 2018 A lot of these abandoned places are still standing because it costs too much to fix, but then it costs money to raze, too. And if you're not making money, then you struggle to invest in doing one or the other. So they just sit on the property, sometimes in hope that anyone who might be interested in buying the land would also want to put their own money into tearing it down.

    • @technologyproductions-ye3px
      @technologyproductions-ye3px 6 лет назад

      Matthew Sanges then sell it to someone else who will

    • @sanges99
      @sanges99 6 лет назад

      technology productions 2018 You didn't really read all of what I said, or perhaps you live in a fantasy land for capitalists. Just because a property is available, doesn't mean someone is going to want to buy it, ESPECIALLY if they need to invest a TON of money to tear down a building that's on that land before they can build and do what they want with it. There's usually other land that can be bought for cheaper than what it might take to fix this one.

    Grew up a few miles from there. This was the Carrier Circle Inn, then the Howard Johnson Carrier Circle. The restaurant and hotel closed almost 20 years ago. Still a lot of hotels there, but by the time you read this that place will either be torn down or in the process of it. The gas station hasn't been closed as long, maybe 7 years. It used to get robbed a lot.
