Functionalism is defined as a study of interconnectedness between different social works in a particular culture. It requires intensive field work irrespective of the type of Culture it is. Malinowski studied the Trobriand islanders and theorised the Kula ring. For example -How fishing is connected with magic, Religion and Economy of trobriand islanders Malinowski was the 1st person to propogate Functionalism. He also emphasised on need functionalism.

When u talk about functionalism start with Durkheim.
And if u are deliberating on structuralism then u can say Mallinowski was the first thinker.
You shouldnt confuse its main different theoretical strings viz Structural functionalism, social functionalism, neo functionalism.
