I'm from Japan and studied historical music and music ethnology in Cologne/Germany and The Hague/Netherlands.

Oud & Lute - King of Instruments -
The origin of the oud belongs to the ancient times and similar instruments were used by the Babylonian and ancient Egyptian. Until today, oud is played as the "king of instruments" in Arabic culture.
The oud found his way to Europe in medieval times and it became "lute". During the Renaissance the lute was also regarded as the "king of instruments".

within my being serenity resides
smooth stones of mindfulness carefully placed
each thought and feeling delicately embraced
sand of time shifting with each breath i take
in this inner sanctuary my spirit awakes
the bonsai tree of wisdom rooted deep within
branches reaching for the sky a dance to begin
the koi fish of clarity swimming in my soul
guiding me towards unity making me whole
as i tend to this garden with love and care
i find balance and harmony beyond compare
in the Zen garden within my being
i discover peace in every sight and feeling

Ever since I discovered Nao Sogabe's lute music, it's become a mainstay for my workday. I just put them on one after another. Very impressed he can play any instrument for 3 hours straight.

Great music and performance. Oud is an instrument that truly cures ailments with its gentleness and soulful tones. Boarders and claims aside, it remains an Eastern musical instrument that will please the ears and gladden the heart of anyone who is willing to listen.

I just love the distinctness of this music. I am Egyptian, and Oud is very common in Egypt, but this music is very different from the ones composed in the Arab world.

Yes I only knew oud from Arabic music. The phrasing feels a bit different but I'm not knowledgable enough to explain it, lol.

It's easy to get a nice sound from an instrument. But to reach the hearts of listeners with an instrument takes almost a lifetime. So for me, there is no question of trying out another instrument.
