The Grave of Mary Surratt

  • I want to be clear; I believe Mary Surratt was innocent and at least framed through perjury.
Mary Surratt was convicted as a conspirator in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and sentenced to death by hanging. She was moved to this site 4 years after her death. Her daughter, Anna Surratt had to make multiple requests before her mother's body was returned to the family. Anna and her brother Isaac are buried next to their mother but unmarked.
I believe that even if Mary did what she was accused of doing, Abraham Lincoln would never have allowed this woman to be sent to the gallows. In the spirit that existed when he led the nation to the end of the Civil War, he would have forgiven her. President Andrew Johnson had an opportunity. In seeing that Mary lived he could have continued the healing process, instead, he allowed vengeance and blood lust to rule. I, for one, am proud to have Mary Surratt laid to rest in my neighborhood.

Mary kept her home open to Booth and all the co-conspirators who came to the house,” her biographer, Kate Clifford Larson, said in a lecture. “Some of them stayed overnight, some just came for meetings. And there was no way that woman could have not known what was going on in that house. It’s not that big of a house…she is a smart woman. She knows what’s going on.”

Respectful gesture sir !!! No expert on this mystery but it just seems there were to many loose and incriminating circumstances and relationships for Mary to survive her trial. in innocence . Lincolns victory over slavery cost her everything and as Lincoln was killed five days after the 4 year civil war ended she had at least a strongly "perceived "motive". I am sure we really can't imagine how fiercely however the Union army wanted revenge. wherever they could find it. The fact that they actually hung a woman in those times surely speaks to that. But I don't believe she should of swung for it. There were four other '"conspirators" who received prison sentences as they were not directly involved in the act.

One of the oddest things is that her son did not come back while she was locked up. It is extremely sad that, while Andrew Johnson got his revenge, President Lincoln was hell bent on forgiveness.

it's always really nice when people want to view historical things and really take the time and effort to view the stuff that doesn't just jump out as heroic and monumental in an obvious way, but to really catch all the details... which are often very ugly and conflict with our more modern ideas and how we like to identify ourselves as a nation. looking at the past through an unbiased lens is hard... but it's important.

Indirectly? Yes. Greatest president? Not by a long shot. Lincoln stopped PRIVATE slave ownership to cripple the south financially as it cut them off from the global financial system of slavery. Slavery itself is still legal today in America but only the various levels of American government are allowed to hold slaves (convicts). This is the part where you avoid being convicted of any crime at all costs. History and perceived history are not the same thing. One is real and the other is real dangerous if you choose to believe it.

There is no doubt that Mary Surratt was guilty. This is a historic fact. Don't let emotions cause you to distort history.

The world is much, much bigger than people and their small beliefs that come from even smaller minds. In order to have slavery, you must also be a slave. Do you know why?

I read the original transcripts from the trial and she was innocent. Even the Judge said she was,but convicted by the jurors. The reason she was found guilty us because a neighbor, who had charges against him,so he wanted to get them dropped,so he told them she was involved, and they believed him. She was railroaded.
