  • Kashmir’s famous Kani shawls have been depicted in the 11th-century wall paintings at the Archie Monastery of Ladakh. Kanihama, also called the handloom village, derives its name from the Kani shawls made here. Made from soft Pashmina yarn, Kani shawls are woven thread by thread based on the coded pattern called Talim and are different from Pashmina shawls made using shuttle on handlooms.
Kani weaving was patronised by Mughal emperors, who also influenced the design and patterns of the shawls. Ain-i-Akbari, the 16th-century book on Akbar’s administration, mentions that he was an avid collector of Kani shawls. Later, the British aristocrats exported the shawls to the UK. The Kani shawl is said to be one of the most valuable items exported from the valley for hundreds of years.
