Would love to see a video on the actual 'How To.' Thank you.
Been getting some requests for that although I don't really have another fireplace project. If I do, I will do a better "How To" video.
Same :)
DiY 101 is to share ideas with actual steps
Thank you , this fire place is what I am looking for. I wish you show more of the actual construction footage.
You're welcome! We wish we would have captured more of the construction aspects but unfortunately, we did not. If we do something like this again in the future we will make sure to document closer to show you all!
I LOVE you two for figuring this out! It is exactly what I have been longing for with our fireplace remodel!!! We are definitely going to do this. THANK YOU!
Super glad this was helpful! ✌️
I’ve had that exact fireplace pinned for so long! Thank you! I love how your guys’ turned out and I think I might try it too😊
You should totally try it! It will be awesome!
Beautiful!! And I’ve been eyeing this style as well. So I’m going to give it a try!! Thanks for posting and encouraging us!!
Thanks! 🙌 I’m glad this was helpful! Can’t wait for you to start on your project!
This is the exact fireplace I’m looking for! I need to adjust it to make it more renter friendly as it’ll be a faux fireplace but it gives me something to start with
This would work great as a faux fireplace! Hope your project goes well!
I spent the whole day trying to find something like this and this is exactly what I was looking for. subbed, you guys seem really cool! excited to watch your other vids!
Glad it was just what you were looking for 👍 Thanks for the kind words ❤️
Oh great, thanks alot for this video. I had this in mind also, so glad to see someone who has done it and done a video for it. Thanks alot
Peace
You're welcome! I know this is something we were hoping to find a video on so we decided to make one.
It looks amazing!!! Thank You for sharing
You're welcome! Glad you liked it.
Haha, love this! Made me smile. Going to look for more videos. Wondering how you decided on your Venetian plaster brand.
We found firenzecolor after using another brand on our first room. We liked the fact that they use authentic plaster from italy and their products seemed easier to apply when we were first starting out which is why we recommend them. If you'd like to order, feel free to use code AFIA10 for 10% off.
Looks great! I’m giving this a try, what thickness hardie backer did you use? 1/4 or 1/2?
I believe we used 1/4” (don’t 100% remember) but you could use any size you’d want. Obviously the thicker you use the more solid the whole thing will feel.
Thanks for the video! Just wondering what you did for the hearth part of the fireplace?
We didn't do anything for the main inside hearth. We just plastered the extension outside of the fireplace. We left the inside as is.
This looks so good!
Thanks! Glad you liked it. 🙏
This is awesome! looking forward to trying it! Any issues with it after a year?
Thanks! Everything has held up nicely. The only issue we had was one time a burning log fell on the ground plaster and it left a mark. We understood that the ground was probably going to get a bit scuffed up over time so this wasn't a big issue for us. Otherwise, it's been great!
I love what you guys did, but I do wish the parts of you talking were in a minimized video or just a voice over while the important how to part was maximized so that we could see better. I kept skipping to find the "start" before I realized that it was how you'd shown it.
Thanks for the feedback! We unfortunately didn't do a good job filming while we were working on this project. If we do something like this again, I will definitely make sure to capture it better!
Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed.
Love this! What tint did you go with for the plaster?
Glad you liked it! The color we tinted our fireplace plaster to was Sherwin-Williams Useful Gray (SW 7050)
Hi there. Making one of these, thanks for the video. I got this cement board seam tape and it is difficult to bend around the corners. I don’t really see it in use on your build. Did you attach to all the seams? Was it during the feather finish coating? Thanks again!
We used a mesh tape that we could bend around the corners. We installed that when we applied our feather finish coat. Hope this answers your question.
Thank you..Yes it does
Great job!! I’m curious, what is the feel of the fireplace when you touch it?
The plaster I use feels smooth and almost velvety. If you've felt a plaster wall before, it feels like that.
I appreciate this video! I really wish you showed how to actually cut, measure & assemble. I want to do this so bad!!
I know. The video was an afterthought unfortunately. If we ever do something like this again, we will make sure to film the whole process.
Thank you for the video, Quick question, when ordering the plaster, What shade of tint did you use and what are the differences? Light tint vs dark tint. Also is there a color you picked? thank you
You're welcome! Glad you liked it. If you'd like to get your plaster matched to a color chip, they can do that for you. You would select the light or dark tint depending on your color chip you are matching and how light or dark it is. It's a little confusing if you don't already know so what I recommend you to do is to email them directly so they can set up an order for you. That way you know exactly what you need. Feel free to mention us or use code: AFIA10 at checkout for 10% off!
The color we picked for our fireplace was Sherwin-Williams Useful Gray (SW 7050).
@@AlongForItAll thank you that really helps and thank you for blessing us with your content and creativity
@@tonycastro2389 Totally! It's what we're here for! 👍
This is what I've been searching for. I painted the old travertine tile fireplace white, but I wanted it to have a look like yours. Can I apply Marmorino KS to the painted travertine tile or anything else?
You probably could apply it directly over but just make sure you first use some good primer. I’d recommend skim coating the whole thing with something else first so you don’t waste the expensive plaster smoothing it out.
Wow looks awesome! We may try this out for our fireplace. What is the texture and feel of the fireplace? Does it feel like stone?
Thanks! The fireplace texture is completely smooth but that will depend on how the plaster is applied and what type of material you are working with. Plaster will generally feel like stone because it has stone in it but when you touch the mantle you can tell it's not stone mainly because the structure is hallow. We are rarely ever touching our mantle so it's pretty easy to forget that it's not soild.
Thank you!
Love the project! Quick question: did you use gorilla glue and nails to attach the pieces of metal stud? In the video you mention using gorilla glue to get a flat surface, but you also mention nails. Thank you!
Thanks! 🙌 Glad you liked it! We ended up using both gorilla glue and nails to attach the pieces. Essentially, we were trying to get it as flush as possible for the cement board to cover it. There might be a better way to connect the metal studs together but I wanted it flush. I think most people would use self-drilling screws to connect metal studs together.
Brilliant! I love this! Great job! Now if I could find someone with the plans to RH Printmakers Desk......😉
Thanks for the kind words! Let me know if you find the plans. 😂
Hello! Did you use a mortar on the cement tape or go straight to the feather finish?
It worked well for us just to go straight to the feather finish but you could totally use mortar if you wanted.
@@AlongForItAll thanks!!
What color did you have your plaster tinted? Is the untinted a brighter white?
We got ours tinted to match Sherwin Williams Useful Gray (SW 7050). The un-tinted plaster is plain white. Not sure if theres any undertones or if it matches a color chip white but you could always ask.
I’m going to purchase some of this plaster from frienzecolor. Would the lightly tinted option be a similar color to what you used? Thanks
If I remember correctly it was the light tint charge. We got our plaster tinted to match Sherwin Williams Useful Gray (SW 7050) You can also email them directly and they will be able to tell you for sure. If your ordering, feel free to use our code AFIA10 to get a discount. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks for the help! We have also spent many hours researching a way to get this look
Please show how you actually built it!
We accidentally built the thing without really filming that much. This is all the clips I had of the building process.
What is the difference in the feather finish and plaster finish?
Feather finish is a cement based product. You could probably get a cool look out of it but for us, we wanted something that had a nicer finish and that’s why we top coated it with Venetian plaster. Hopefully that answers your question
Nice job! What color did you tint your plaster?
We used Sherwin Williams Useful Gray (SW 7050) for the fireplace. 👍
Heey , what is the color of the tint you chose please? You said that firenzecolor tinted for you the plaster, what was the name of the shade please? Getting ready for a plastered fireplace project
We got our plaster tinted to match Sherwin-Williams Useful Gray (SW 7050)
I know you said that you bought 3kg of the plaster but did you use all of it? Online I only see the 1kg or 5kg option.
If you have a specific amount you need, just email them and ask for that specific amount so you don't have to pay for extra. If I remember correctly, we had some plaster left over.
any idea if this would hold up outside? thanks!
I haven’t personally tried it but these plasters do say you can use outdoors. I believe you’d want to use a specific sealer for outdoors to help protect it better. Sorry, I don’t have much info on this. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@AlongForItAll thanks for sharing! have a great weekend
How is everything holding up? We’re planning on doing this soon for a gas fireplace and I’m curious if you’ve noticed any discoloration or cracking? Thanks!
Everything is holding up. No cracks. Our fireplce is wood burning so there’s some discoloration from pieces falling on the outside hearth.
@@AlongForItAll that’s awesome to hear! Can’t wait to get started
What they've done is not safe long term.
@@timcay1698 why do you say that?
@@historychick8348 Wood shouldn't be within a certain distance of a fireplace opening. Long term exposure to heat lowers wood's combustion temperature, even if its not an issue now this could eventually cause a fire. Wood stoves will sometimes have exceptions that allow you to reduce clearances with approved heat shields, but open fireplaces have no such exception I'm aware of.
Are you supposed to seal the plaster after you’re done applying it or do you leave it like that?
Yes, sealing your plaster is always recommended. Plaster is porous so it absorbs things so sealing it helps protect it!
@@AlongForItAll also if after plaster has dried and you see uneven spots or skim lines should we do another coat in just that area or do we have to do another coat on the entire fireplace? I ask because I wasn’t sure if you go over ugly spot the second time would the fireplace now have darker areas. We only have 3 areas that need it which are more inner towards fire place because the tight corners. I’m using same color as you are so you think it will look darker if we do second coat in the areas or should we redo the entire fireplace…second coat
@@lb4843 If you have uneven spots or lines, you'll want to either sand or fix them before you final coat. The look of Venetian plaster shows layers, so if you are unhappy with one layer, you'll probably want to fix it before moving on. Ideally, you'll do a full final coat covering everything, but it is possible to do just an area, but it is harder to get it to blend. Does this answer your question?
@@AlongForItAll yes it does! Thank you so much. Just finished watching your video on soapstone sealer. If you ever are looking to do more videos on plaster can you do a video on how to plaster small corners or narrow places. We did a fire place similar to yours but ours had a smaller plane for us to maneuver our skimmer. We did it in the end but weren’t sure how the professional do it.
@@lb4843 Awesome. Yeah, small areas are definitely difficult. I'll consider making a video next time I run into something like that as I know it would probably be super helpful to others.
did you have to add a vent to the fireplace?
Our fireplace was already fully functional, we just gave it a face lift.
Did you just cut 45 degree angles for the inside slants??
The angle isn't 45 since theres a slant involved. I'm not sure what the actual angle ended up being, but we just measured both the long edge and short edge and marked from there so it was exact.
Can you show more how you framed the angle? Is there another video?
Hey, glad you are interested in this. Unfoturnalty, there's no other video. I really just made this more as an inspirational video on what you can do for a couple hundred dollars with the idea that people would take this and come up with their own idea. That being said, the way I made the angles was simply bridging the gap with metal studs. The best look at this starts at 7:17 in the video. Hope this helps.
@@AlongForItAll thank you, I will take a look again.
no micro-cracks?
Not that I can see. I assume that would only happen if your house was settling? Ours looks about the same as the day we applied it almost 2.5 years ago.
You know the color you had used to tint the plaster?
We tinted it to match Sherwin Williams Useful Gray (SW 7050)
@@AlongForItAll thank u!!! You guys are the best!!!
Hey guys if you see this PLEASE put out a new video
🥸
Show you smaller and the fireplace bigger!
Sorry it's small. We did the best with what we had captured. If we do something similar again, I will show it more clearly.
have you ever left it burning alone? like ever fell asleep and forgot to get it done?
I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. 🤷
Shame we didnt see anything about the process. Ur talking is boring.
Thanks for the kind words. Really means so much to me.
Too much talking
Thanks for the feedback.
