📚 Description: It always seems the filthiest, worse-packed, not-as-described guitars always come from eBay. My theory is people who are not that into musical instruments (selling for a friend/relative) don't know about Reverb so they list on eBay. However, now that ebay has lower fees on used electric guitars - maybe their seller pool will get better! At least they had the courtesy to wrap this case in cardboard, but at the end of the day - this package would not have survived rough handling! We also unboxed 3 other great guitars!

I probably bought 25 Gibsons off Ebay between 2008 and 2016 and never had a bad experience. Of course I only bought from sellers in this country who had been selling onsite for years and had 100% seller ratings. That way I never had to go thru any bs.

Guitars I purchased from Japan were shipped via EMS and delivered by USPS. USPS is a cheaper way as they just bring the the invoice to pay.

Yes and no to the eBay vs reverb situation. I was buying and selling guitars on eBay about a year after they appeared on the internet. Yes, a lot of sellers there don't know much about guitars and shipping. However I have also noticed that most sellers on reverb inflate the price of used instruments. I like that gold top with the p90s.

I bought a beautiful new "Frampton Epiphone Limited Edition Les Paul Custom" from Musician's Friend. It was packaged well, no damage and the set up was flawless. Nicest neck that I have ever played on an electric. If packaging is bad from places such E bay, it is most often the fault of people not doing a diligent job in take care of the guitar before shipping. If they are going to sell something, it is their responsibility to make sure it is packaged safely.

I've bought and sold a number of guitars on eBay over the past 15 years, and the only problem I've ever had was a DeArmond that arrived with a cracked headstock about 11 years ago. I bought it for about $65 & just parted it out and made a small profit. If you check out the sellers before you buy from them, ask questions, look at the pictures and know what you're buying you'll be fine buying on eBay.
If you don't you're likely to get screwed over no matter where you buy.

You're talking about Reverb. I have a Reverb story. A couple of years ago, I spotted a "pretty rare Fender Squire Telecaster bass" from the early 1970's. It looked beautiful from the pictures, so I broke my Cardinal rule about buying instruments online. I went ahead and ordered it. Got excited I guess. Well, when it got here, I unboxed it, actually no box. Just shipped in the case. No lock, nothing. So I pulled it out, and really was pretty nice. Finish was in great shape. Action was pretty high, on the edge of being unplayable. Ok, that's not a problem since I've been doing my own setups for many years. So I plugged it in, and nothing. Checked everything, still nothing. Electronics were shot. I had a friend help and he ran the serial number. Turns out it's not early 70's, it was a 2012. Everything was wrong with the deal. I tell everyone to stay away from Reverb. Nothing but lies and a ripoff.

I bought a 1982 Yamaha SG 1000 from an eBay seller in Japan ( I am in U.K.) which was quite expensive. It took about 6 weeks to arrive and I was worried it would be damaged in transit. I needn’t have worried. The guitar itself was tightly wrapped in bubble wrap, then placed into a padded gig bag with no room to move, then placed into a cardboard guitar shaped box which was then placed into a very thick cardboard outer box padded with brown packing paper.
    It was perfect 👍

"Shipping accidents"; Way back in 79 I left my amp and 65 Fender Musicmaster II at my friends house after we jammed on a weekend. I came back the next week to jam and he looked really nervous. Turns out, his Mom got mad and tossed his Gibson SG and my Fender out the front door. My WAS NOT in a case but his was. Other than a paint chip, my bolt neck Fender was absolutely fine. His SG which was in the case, had a crack in the body at the neck joint.

I second that. I prefer Fender electrics, but I’m really fascinated by ES-125s, ES-175s, and the different variations of them from the 50s and 60s. My favorite guitar shop currently has a 1957 ES-140T that I’m really interested in. It looks like an ES-175 with the Florentine cutaway, it has one P-90, the T in model name means it’s a thinline, and it is a short scale.

My local shop had one of those Chris Cornell from the last run and I noodled around on it. It was right after his death and the prices on anything to do with him automatically doubled, just like when EVH passed away. But I did run it through it's paces and it was the first time I have ever played Lollar p/u's. They're definitely their own unique tone, that much is certain. Thru a Fender Twin reissue it really had a sweet tone with a little reverb and a touch of delay. But the price was unbelievable. They were asking $9,200 for it. I think they've come back down a little, but not much.

Somehow the guitar was unharmed. Ordered a Marshall combo from a store in Cleveland, OH. I live in KS. It showed up with a 1X2 sticking into the front of the amp and broke off even with the outside edge of the box. That one was odd. One other time I ordered a hardshell case for a Michael Kelly and the case was totally destroyed. Only way I see that kind of damage is if it was driven over somehow as it was flattened. No tire tracks on the box though.

The only thing I can see right now that I would mod on it would be that I would try to put on one of those original V tailpieces, you know the big V shaped gold/brass ones? But I don't know if there is enough room because of how much smaller of a body this one is. Recently on Glenn Frickers show, earlier today (Friday Oct. 20, 2020) actually! Again the topic of cheap vs expensive guitars came up and again Glenn said that with the way they are making cheaper guitars today there is no reason to buy the Gibson name and to pay a couple of grand for a guitar you can get from someone NOT Gibson for a few hundred dollars. I think I can see where this is all headed, we live in a throw away time period and that's why the cheap guitar market is booming. I am guilty of it to a point myself. I argue with the Gibson fanboys all the time about why I am just as likely to buy an Epiphone over a Gibson. I just got a brand new Epiphone 60's tribute model and of all the brand new guitars I have purchased in the last 7 years ( about 12-15 guitars in total) this Epiphone is THE best one yet!! I try talking to the Gibson fan boys and a of buddies of mine about why this Epiphone is just as good as a Gibson yet I only paid $650 for it and at that price I even got a hard case! Gibson pickups (57 classic N, 57 classic+ B) Grover tuners, real Bone nut, Switchcraft 3 way, quality wiring, CTS pots (real CTS) 4A flame maple top (veneer), Push/pull tone pots with coil splitting and in/out of phase and a hard case, $650!!! No blemishes, frets are great, finish is flawless, no off center screws. Yes I know in a few years if I tried to sell it I might get $300 if I am lucky because it's an Epiphone and at the same time a brand new Gibson I could get close to the original asking price, sometimes more depending on the model. But as we all know, every guitar maker goes through a period of selling not quite up to par instruments, so when those begin hitting the cheaper model guitars, what is going to happen then? Buy what you like, like what you buy - is my motto.

At least yours had cardboard. I bought a Tacoma Thunderchief bass on EBay. The seller threw a tag on the handle of the case, and that's how it showed up at my door. Plenty of real estate there for Tolex shredding...for sure. WOW!

Bought a camera lens from what ended up being a pawnshop. At the time it was vaque who the seller was. It was supposed to be an exact match to my camera according to Ebay and the seller. You guessed it. Apparently it was for an older model DSLR camera and actually I believe it was actually more for an SLR rather than a DSLR as the locking mechanism didnt match.

@Douglas Bedore was supposed to be used but somewhat new. It's made by Sigma. I know they make lenses that match up but as I said it's obviously for an SLR not a DSLR. Since nothing lines up.

Since i am left handed, I buy guitars where I can get them, including ebay. Usually everything has been packaged fine, but I had three laughably bad experiences. I bought an old Harmony and it came just wrapped in bubble wrap (amazingly, it was completely undamaged). Later I received a Yamaha LL16 in just a soft case and bubble wrapped - matchwood with bits hanging off. The seller originally suggested this was OK as he had mentioned it had a scratch. I sent him a couple of photos (which also showed he had not sent it in the case advertised), and he immediately caved when I suggested we should let Ebay resloive it. Finally, I had a seller send me the wrong guitar - again I had won a Yamaha LL16, but he sent a Tokai LP copy in hard case and bubble wrapped. Selector toggle trashed. I have no idea why people do this. Here in the UK, most couriers won't even accept a guitar wrapped this way, and I had a lot of trouble getting the couriers to accept the returns! Nowadays, before I even bid I always just ask the seller if the guitar will be sent in a guitar specific box +/- a case, with appropriate internal packing, and this weeds out those folk who don't know how to pack a guitar. I do the same on reverb, actually, and it's how I send guitars I sell.

0:50 I had an eBay seller wrap the guitar in bubble wrap ONLY and send it through USPS. Fortunately it was a Gen 3 Chainsaw case so no damage but otherwise I would have been pissed.

I will watch just about any unboxing video. My Martin D16E (acoustic guitar) has those "flames" (as you call them) on the top. In the acoustic world we call this visual imperfection on the top wood a "bear claw" (as it looks very much like a large (very large) bear claw). As this guitar ages more individual fingers of the bear claw become visible. Martin says the wood imperfections (it is "16" quality wood) do not affect the tone quality (so,so,sweet.) I can always at a glance of a group of similar "dreadnaught" style guitars (they can all start looking the same, can't they?) pick mine out in seconds.

There are a lot of solid sellers on eBay. If you’re worried, check to see who it is before purchasing, check the buyer’s rating and maybe ask for insurance.

Bought a guitar on "REVERB" . Was well boxed and had bubble wrap. When I opened the guitar case the headstock was broken off. It was mailed through the USPS. So I would put the blame on the shipping handlers.

That happens when they drop the box from a height. Happened to me once. No amount of brilliant packing can prevent that! My customer claimed his insurance $$ and hired a luthier, who did a seamless repair. So he got his guitar for the price of the work!

I bought a new guitar online from a 'reputable' retailer... it wasn't in it's original box, it was wrapped in 2 layers of bubble wrap then sent in a large cardboard box... oh, and it had a cracked neck just behind the nut in both sides. Something told me it was a return, so returned it back.
Some people do not give a flying...

Looks like you got several interesting guitars in for your box opening. Cant wait to see the review on all of them. Especially the gold top the tobacco burst and the modern V. The modern V seems to glow several colors in the right light a d in different angles. I'm curious also about the Chris Cornell ES335 being that he was close to my age I feel I had some of the same influences of different artists. Mainly because of his style in playing was similar to mine. The tobacco burst in ways reminds me of an early 70s Electra my oldest brother owns . Makes .e wonder if Gibson didnt borrow from other manufacturers as well as they borrowed from Gibson in style. Have you done a video on how to read the numbers on a Gibson and does it also apply to other brands under Gibson such as Epiphone?
